Mandel gives MacIntyre hire an "A"

Colorado: Mike MacIntyre, former San Jose State head coach. In sharp contrast to two years ago, Colorado took a smart long-term approach and hired one of the few coaches who has experience overseeing the type of massive rebuilding job necessary in Boulder. In three seasons, MacIntyre lifted the long-irrelevant Spartans from 1-11 to 11-2. Prior to that, MacIntyre, 47, spent two seasons on David Cutcliffe's Duke staff. The guy knows rebuilding. Grade: A

Before this thread devolves into a nose-thumbing extravaganza, I would like to point out that if the grade were low, the discussion would probably be centered around how worthless Mandel, and sportswriters in general, and his opinions are.

we should dig up all the old Embo threads and see.

You mean like all of the D and F grades CU got for hiring Embree?

I am primarily posting this because of this
Colorado (Jon Embree, Redskins tight end coach): D
Cash-strapped CU, rejected by the likes of Mike Bellotti, decided to reconnect with its past by bringing in former star and assistant Embree, overlooking the fact he's never been even a college offensive coordinator. Nor has his new offensive coordinator, former Buffs star Eric Bienemy. Another CU great, new defensive line coach Kanavis McGhee, most recently coached at Gannon (Pa.) University. Good luck with that.

The difference between MacIntyre and Embree is that we "hoped" Embree could be a good head coach. We know MacIntyre has the skills. That doesn't guarantee success here, but there a lot fewer variables.

Nice - I'm still scratching my head at the continued Kingsbury lovefest.

Same here. The folks always say that he will need time to grow into the HC position, and will get the time. No he won't. Not if he isn't winning. Fans care about one thing: winning. Just ask Embree.

It's a grade before the test is taken, but I'll also give the MM hire and "A". Seems like a VERY solid hire given the data available.

Agreed. This is the 2nd or 3rd time I've seen Kliff Kingsbury listed as a great hire. Really? Why does a 33 year old with no track record garner so much praise. I suspect he'll be gone in 2-3 years.

irrelevant - Hawkins was universally acclaimed by the National media as a great hire. Unlike Hawkins, Embree and staff were fired prematurely after 24 months by Bohn, likely to save his own hide. It is predictable how our fan base will react if MacIntyre fails at CU, which is highly likely IMO unless he can dramatically upgrade his recruiting in future years.

Bohn did a miserable job of due diligence on the Hawkins hire, and a argument can be made about the Embree/Bieniemy hire, though its hard to believe that in its entirely this staff was as clueless as many on this board seem to believe. Now we pay $2mm a year to a guy who was making $450k that has had one winning season as a HC, with a lot of JUCO's at a lower level of football

dude.....

CU went into half at fresno state down 55-7

They never won a game at Folsom Field

CU got beat by a D2 school. At home.

Teams that CU played were playing 2nd stringers in the 2nd quarter because CU was so bad.

CU was damn near or last in every statistical catagory that matters.

the team was just awful in every way, shape, form and context. period. they were a gobblin!

JE was not fired prematurely. if anything, he was hired prematurely. you need to wrap your head around that idea.

otherwise, you are just a dumbass.

Since you love to throw out hyperbolic statements and then disappear, I am sure this post will not receive a reply. But what does it tell you that the two coordinators on the last staff are now position coaches? That maybe the three guys at the very top of the coaching staff were unqualified? Or would being the worst BCS football team in the country and one of the worst teams period tell you that?

No one knows if MacIntyre will work out or not, but he looks to be more qualified than Embree was and his DC is much more qualified than Brown was. Add in an up and coming OC and you see why people might be willing to give this coaching staff more benefit of the doubt. The JUCO thing is overblown with 13 total on the roster, mostly the kids at SJSU are high school recruits from California and Arizona.

Seriously. Klatt, let it go man.

Hawkins was loved by the national media and fired for being mediocre to bad. Jon was panned by everyone and turned out to be worse than anyone expected. Sounds like Duff nailed the grade inflation argument.

We did beat Arizona at Folsom in 2011, otherwise I agree with everything you just said.

Embree and staff weren't given enough time to completely destroy the CU name and football brand. If you're looking at it from a Lex Luthor I-Have-To-Destroy-This perspective, then yes, they weren't given enough time, I'll give you that.

But really, you've got to admire what they did with the time they had.

Dammit Rialto. I'm starting to wonder if you hate Embree and staff, because everytime you come to their defense, the board turns into a cauldron of hate for those guys.
