Grading the coaching hires: Mike macintyre and colorado

It is very difficult to win at Colorado because the school and top brass could care less about football. The lip service we received from these jokers a month or so ago doesn't mean squat to me. Over a decade of neglect and still no coordinated vision are egregious.

When we had commitment from the school in the late 80's and 90's it wasn't difficult.

This should be a good job and it should be easy to recruit to Boulder. Sadly neither is now true.

I actually thought the article hit on a lot of key points. Decent read overall.

Agreed. The admin has ponied up the cash for a real coaching staff. But until we actually break ground on facilities, the admin (DiStep and BB) are still in hot water for letting things get so bad at Folsom. Fortunately MikeMac's contract requires upgrades, so unless they want to renig on that and NEVER get a coach to look at this job again, I have a flicker of hope.

Pretty bad article for multiple reasons.

Well thanks for pointing out those reasons. Astute analysis.

I think the harsh light of the article is warranted and, until things change, pretty accurate.

I still have hope as well. Why? I guess I must love disappointment.

No doubt

Issues off the top of my head:
-I don't see how the move to the PAC 12 hurt us in any way outside of financially for a couple of years. Playing Baylor/aTm/TT and OU/UT/NU every year was a difficult schedule. KSU, Mizzou, and ISU haven't been push overs either. Comparable schedules in terms of difficulty.

-Why is it so hard to win at CU? Do we have the admin rejecting kids that can help us like Crawley or Wright? What about the money and promises they were making and throwing around during the coaching search? Even when we were really cash strapped we still had one of the higher assistant salaries in the PAC 12. It may have been more difficult winning here when Hawkins was here because of the scandal but what exactly makes it so hard to win here? I think it has more to do with two bad coaching hires and less about the school itself. We've always been a consistent winner, has that much changed?

-Facilities. Are they really that bad or are we overblowing it? Is te admin to blame for not having upgrades ready (solely)? Or is the fan base to blame as well for not being traditionally good donors. I personally think both.

Facilities aren't up to conference standards. So while they aren't terrible, they are clearly not adequate, either.

Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but I believe them when they say they are making a legit commitment to athletics. If I were skeptical, it would be much harder to be a fan.

Are you really trying to portray this administration in a good light? Really? The same guys who made those two bad hires got to make this one too. Do you realize why outsiders (and even many in the fanbase) might not be sold on MacIntyre working out?

Yes, the facilities are that bad. The administration is mostly to blame because they are not leading from the front, as has been discussed here time and time again.

Basically, your criticisms are poor.

No, just asking questions. I also don't think the facilities are as bad as people are making them out to be. Not great, but not the worst in the PAC 12, and others have written about that.

I also disagreed that we have arguable the worst talent in all of FBS and the stats that EB and GB put up are not indicative of the overall talent level. Again, not good but certainly not the worst in FBS.

So we are arguing "poor facilities" versus "worst in the conference"? Comforting.

Until proven otherwise, coaching AND talent have put us at the bottom of the country. Pretty easy concept to grasp.

Even being in the conversation for worst talent and facilities is bad enough. No need to debate who is absolutely the worst.

I think I see what tini is doing, and I don't have any problem with it. We have to acknowledge our weaknesses. At the same time, we don't have to dwell on them. Identify areas that need improvement, accentuate areas of strength. Don't wallow in our failures, just learn from them.

Tini is not really acknowledging the weaknesses. He merely qualifies them with some vague bull**** reasoning. He has done this the entire time he has been on the site.

we might not be the worst, but we are close to the bottom right now and every school that can possibly be below us has announced some kind of facility upgrades.

You told the whole story - nothing more needs to be said.

I don't see it that way. I think we've been beaten down as fans for so long that we automatically find fault with whatever the admin does based on the fact that they've allowed it to get as bad as its gotten. While I understand that mindset, I don't share it. I see the firing of Embree as an indication that they realized they made a mistake when they hired him in the first place, and moved quickly to correct the error. That's positive in my book. I see the fact that they're openly talking about necessary facility upgrades as a positive. I'm frustrated with the time it's taking to get things going, but I have faith that they know what needs to be done, and are diligently working towards that goal.

I get tired of people calling Dan Hawkins a bad HIRE. He was not a bad HIRE. At the time he was HIRED by Colorado, Dan Hawkins was 93-22-1 as a head football coach. At the time he was HIRED by Colorado, Dan Hawkins had taken an NAIA team to that division's national championship, and had won four (4) straight WAC conference titles at Boise State. If there had been ANY coach with those credentials in 2012 - he would have been hired immediately by any number of schools.

HIRING Hawkins wasn't the problem. Keeping him as long as they did was the problem.

I get tired of people glossing over the Dan Hawkins hire as if conducting a coaching search is just following the advice of Chuck Neinas or firing up Google to look at a coach's record. If you are the athletic director at a major university, you should be doing more than just signing off on hires. Dan Hawkins was the only guy Bohn seriously considering hiring, so you're damn right it is a bad hire if that coach fails as badly as Hawkins did.

Given the climate at the time, and the situation CU football was recently embroiled in, the hire was exactly what Colorado needed at the time. It just didn't work out, for whatever reason.

Agree. It was widely praised as a good hire...it just didn't work out. Would some more due diligence have helped? Maybe, but who knows. What I like about MikeMac is he actually turned a program around, he didn't inherit a good program like Pigeon. The guy was in over his head and the mini-me fiasco didn't help either.

We will never know because Bohn had already had his mind made up.

I don't see anything wrong with the story. It may have erred on the side of negativity, but it was overall pretty accurate imo.

Is Utah really a "good" producer of talent? I know Arizona is, but I figured Utah and Colorado were on a pretty equal footing.

MacIntrye is a self-made football coach who took a circuitous route to Colorado, from former NFL defensive backs coach to Duke defensive coordinator before eventually landing at San Jose State. There, he went to one of the toughest places to win in college football and turned the program around 360 degrees; the Spartans went from one win in 2010 all the way a 10-2 mark and near upset of Stanford in 2012. MacIntyre might not be a miracle worker, but he’s pretty darn close.

Five paragraphs into this and I have given up. If HCMM turns this program around 360 degrees he should be fired. 360 degrees means we have one really good season and back to sucking at 1-11.

(Ashamed I even let it slide on the Ty Pennington reference)

Nothing new in this article that we didn't already know. He really didn't state why he didn't like the hire, he just pointed to the lack of talent, the 1980's & 90's, CU losing it's football soul (wtf?) and the facilities. None of which have anything to do with not liking the hire.
