Does CU need to get more athletic at the QB position?

Do you like the direction we are trending with guys like Dillon and Sefo or do you think CU needs to take it to the next level?

I like a QB that can get you first downs outside of the play. Things break down sometimes and those extra plays a QB can get with his legs kill a defense. I still believe that being able to throw is the first priority, though.

Average would be refreshing. It seems to me we have always been at our best with athletic QBs. Furthermore, athletic QBs can make up for a lot of deficiencies elsewhere.

I haven't looked enough at Dillon or Sefo to judge their athleticism. I have just assumed they are more traditional pro guys.

I'm hoping we go for 2 QBs this next cycle. One that is a proven thrower and one that is an athlete first and needs some work on his passing.

Worst case scenario, the run first one doesn't develop as hoped and we can use him as a WR or DB.

And, at least in the college game, I much prefer watching offenses where the QB is a real threat to run as opposed to those teams where the QB is a pure pocket passer and no real threat to make any plays with his legs.

Great question. Obviously depends on the offense we are implementing. As has been discussed on the site, a pistol set in a spread offense can have a dual-threat QB or not. Personally I love having a QB who at least is a threat to run as it adds another dimension to the offense and keeps the D honest.

I would prefer a throw first QB who also has wheels rather than a running QB who can throw OK.

I've got to see what our offense looks like with presumably Dillon or Sefo at the helm to really make a good call on the question, but as others have mentioned, a QB who is a threat to run adds a dimension for the defense to think about and makes your offense potentially more explosive.

Pretty sure from the clips of Sefo I've seen, he can move around pretty well and is the type of dude than can keep drives alive with his feet.
As for Shane, I don't know...but after seeing Fales in SJSU's offense, he didn't run much at all, but that was still a damn effective offense.
If they want to get more of a running element going in the Pistol, yeah, a mobile guy would help, but I still think a big body like Shane could be very helpful, too.

Yes, Please! QB play was a large distraction on both sides of the ball last year (TOP and turnovers wearing out the Defense). In the absence of Johnny Football I would like a QB that can see the receiver and have the angle to get him the ball. Agility would be most welcome also.

I've always been partial to a more athletic qb. My favorite offense at CU was in 1994, loved how balanced they were. Kordell is more athletic than most you'll find. Having a athletic qb just puts so much pressure on a defense, alot to account for.

"Assume" makes an ass out of u and me! To assume they are heavy-footed pro-type QBs, means you haven't paid attention to what they do in winter sports.

Both players were/are skilled basketball players in HS. Dillon was recruited to play the sport in college; Sefo seems to be an integral part of his BB team's success at guard/SF. Further, Sefo both passed and ran well in the games posted online, although he's no Johnny Football speed-wise (Who is? Well, Mariota was sorta close.) Both appear athletic enough for me. Both seem similar to a young Colin Kaepernick, who only had one offer for a football schollie coming out of HS(Nevada), recall he was 6'5" and only weighed 175. Development of these guys will be the key.

Kordell was one of the most athletic QBs to play at CU or anywhere else. He had a rocket for an arm but was athletic enough to be an effective WR in the NFL in his slash role. He may have had a much better NFL career if he had just gone there full time.

No question that an athletic QB creates a whole set of issues for the defense and can make up for a lot of weaknesses on the offense. At the same time some of those guys fall into a trap of relying to much on athetic ability and hurt their teams (see Mike Vick as a pro.)

I think both Dillon and Sefu are a step above what we have had for a number of year at CU in a number of ways including athletically. What is important is that it looks like each of them uses athletic ability to keep the pass play alive instead of just abandoning the play and running at the first sign of trouble. I think this is especially true of Sefu who carried a very limited HS team way above where they should have ended due to his athletic ability, toughness, and leadership. Teams knew that Sefu was that team and went after him full blast and he dealt with it and won. Dillon finished strong as well but looked to have a lot more talent around him in the process.

No, I think our QB play has been adequate since Bernard Jackson was marching cu down the field.

There are stupid questions.

I think both these kids will be more athletic than some think. Dillon had interest from D1 basketball schools as a 3. Sefo's film speaks for itself.

I'm less concerned with their athleticism than I am about their ability to make the right reads and deliver the ball quickly and accurately. Also, not willing to write off a couple of the other guys under new coaching. Actually think Webb could do ok with the right offense and coaching, one that doesn't require him to sit and wait to get clobbered.

But make no mistake, put me firmly in the camp that wants (begs actually) HCMM to play the young stud (Whoever that may be) in the name of future development.

Buff Enuf, please stop being a jackass in every reply. It is beyond old. Also, your comparison to Kaepernick is way off.

Do we need increased athletic QB play than we have had the last 5 years, yes. Are Dillon and Sefo a step in that direction, maybe. I am not sure we can say yet but from what I have read and the highlights on both seem to indicate we are heading there. We need to continue to recruit better QBs each round and get to the point where we are getting into elite levels. Continued improvement

I made the Kap comparison as well, that dude is way better than I thought. He can flat out get it, he is way faster than I thought. He has a big arm too, I'd take that at CU please lol.

I definitely wouldn't say Sefo or Shane are on a Kaepernick/Steve Young/RG3 or even Aaron Rodgers level in terms of athleticism. They can definitely move better than most of the QBs we've had in here for awhile, though.

Yep I underestimated Kap a bit there lol. Not many have that guys skill set being that big. They can both move a bit, Sefo and Dillon, which is a nice bonus.

Not sure what you mean by the next level...both guys are 3-4* guys.

Considering MikeMac coached Fales, a guy who was relateively average athletically, to the #3 QB rating and the most accurate passer. I think our QBs will be fine in his system.

Interesting discussion considering that compared to the majority of guys we have had the last few years just being able to see over the OL is a step up.

I would change "get more athletic at the QB position," to "get better at the QB position."

Taylor Martinez is an athletic QB. I don't want him as our QB (and most NU fans I know, don't want him either). Everybody wants RGIII, Kap, etc. They are special because, well...they are special. There aren't many of them.

My point is, that athleticism is not the be all, end all, of good QBs. Extending plays is great. But making plays is better.

I am excited to see both guys. Reasonable or not, I assume both guys will be a substantial upgrade. I also think buffaholic makes a great point about reads and delivery. If they can read and deliver I will be plenty happy.

I think we need a QB who is a quick read and quick thinker. Being able to react quickly is more important than being "athletic." Other than having a good arm, that is.

don't care if he can't run or whatever - I just want some game changing ability in a positive way.

In today's game, I'd say height is pretty overrated at qb. So many gun looks, just find a lane. In general, we just haven't had the talent. Pretty much everywhere but our oline hasn't been good and neither has the qb play.
