CU Buffs coach Mike MacIntyre's first recruiting class could surprise

The first Colorado football recruiting class of the Mike MacIntyre era likely won't cause much of a buzz, considering that the new CU coach had to scramble to salvage what he could since taking the job on Dec. 10.

Then again, perhaps the newest group of Buffs — to be announced Wednesday — will follow the lead of the past three groups signed by newly hired Colorado coaches and provide a surprising number of contributors.

They'll have a hard time beating Hawkins first class with: Jimmy Smith, Jalil Brown, and Nate Solder.

I know MM is on the road working on next years class.

But this class was mostly wrapped up by the time he got to CU. Only 5 or so are his own recruits. Rooting for all of them.

I am in agreement. With keeping all of embree's offers on board, I really feel HCMM has done pretty well with who he recruited in. There will be some surprises in this class (think speedy). With better coaching and game planning the hawkins and embree recruits should look better. The Kool-Aid is flowing in Boulder.

I think he did a terrible job adding to the class. A bunch of reaches who will only see the field early because CU is so poor with their current depth charts. Since they will be seeing the field early at least I can hope that when the are JR/SR's they will have enough experience to compete with the superior talent that most of the Pac 12 is bringing in.

With that being said I really do think that this coach is going to get the absolute best out of every player he brings in. What we all thought we were getting with Embree 2 years ago.

I actually think you will see MacIntyre more inclined to redshirt players than the previous two coaches.

Recruiting is vital, but so is having a real FBS head coach and coaching staff. No way we lack the talent to beat CSU and Sac St...that was on the coaches. MikeMac's coaches are proven winners, so I expect the teams to be more competitive next year. Nothing stellar, but more games should be actual games going into the 4th quarter. Winning 3-5 games will help recruiting...demonstrating things are actually getting better in Boulder. Hopefully reality will approximate my dreams for this fall instead of dealing with the brutality of CU football...but I remain jaundiced...

This is literally saying nothing. "It is possible that some of the players in this year's recruiting class could contribute." No ****? What a worthless tautology.

I would be inclined to think so. This class really looks like a depth builder to me. You take alot of these Ath type guys and RS them and plug them in where they fit best for 2 years from now.

Then I think how has this recruiting class made the team on the field better for next year. I'm not sure it will have any impact at all accept for Sefo.

So we all agree that coach will do better of winning the games he should. But most of us agree that the current recruiting class has done nothing to improve the overall outlook of the program for talent to compete down the road. If his recruiting capability continues to be 2 star Athletes I really think you will see us be a 6 and 6 program year in and year out.

That isn't what I envisioned with the hire.

How does a team like Boise State continue to perform so well? From 2008 - 2012 they are 61-5. Granted, their conference schedule is not BCS level. But they didn't earn that record against only their conference foes. Boise State has beaten UW (Pac-12), Arizona State (Pac-12), Georgia (SEC), Virginia Tech (ACC), Oregon State (Pac-12), Utah (Pac-12), Oregon x2 (Pac-12), and TCU (Big 12) in the past 5 years (2008-2012). This from a team that currently has the #59 class for 2013; and had the #54 class in 2012, #53 class in 2011, #82 class in 2010, #72 class in 2009, #89 class in 2008, #68 class in 2007, #70 class in 2006, #64 class in 2005, and #99 class in 2004.

Fantastic player development and they actually recruit much better than most of their conference competition.

Agree completely. Hoping/expecting MacIntyre to be the type of guy who can do the first part. Will wait to judge the second part once he's in place a whole year.
And that 2007 class for Boise State, #68?
It had Moore, McClellin, Winn, Martin, Pettis, Thompson, Baker and Young...all guys who have been on NFL rosters. Impressive.

Because we got rid of HaLkins for them.

Boise state plays a weak conference schedule with the best athletes at that level. They can focus on development and execution and circle their handful of major ball games. It isn't apples to apples.

He recruited Patrick Willis and Eli to Ole Miss. And SJSU had (I believe) the top recruiting classes in it's division. But interesting to read he's a bottom of the barrel scraper all of a sudden... very insightful.

Most of the known impact talent is off the board. You can't turn on a faucet and recruits start pouring out. It's a relationship business. Takes time. If this was a program that didn't completely embarrass itself last year, maybe it would be easier.

Only a big brand name coach can come to CU and pull last minute talent. And those big names didn't want to coach here. So, where's the real disappointment here?

I think a better, more realistic target than Boise would be Oregon State. They've never been able to recruit with the best in the Pac-12, but have managed to consistently win 7-10 games under Mike Riley. Obviously, I hope our ceiling is higher in the long run, however, just getting to 7 wins in the next few years would be a welcomed accomplishment. And we'll have to do it like the Beavers, with mostly two and three star players. As mentioned, it all starts with beating the teams we're suppose to like CSU and Sac St.

In its present state, CU isn't going to successfully recruit players who will be capable starters as freshmen or sophomores. That means that until we're starting a critical mass of upperclassmen we won't scare any Pac-12 teams. We're surely at least two years away from that point, and probably three or four. I have no problem seeing contributors from this recruiting class in three+ years--it's the near term where we have a problem.

I think this is the major reason for their success. They can get their second and third string players playing time and allow them to develop (faster than most) while blowing out the CSU's of the world, which allows them to have a very deep and experienced bench.

And a lot of the time they are running into a BCS team at the end of the year that just missed out on the BCS championship bowl game and might be a little unmotivated. The early wins in the season can be attributed to this also, many of the BCS teams they play early in the year are breaking in new players.

Oh and great coaching.

You just have to hope that this class finds a Greg Henderson or two who can make an impact right away despite no one outside the program having high expectations. Most of the class won't make an impact until their about their 3rd year here and that's ok.

Who is most? It seems you and only a few others are really down on this class. I don't know what you expected from a new coach inheriting a 1-11 team. Did you think that all of a sudden that three and four star recruits were gonna line up because we got a new coach? This mentality strikes me as alarmist. Dykes didn't flip any four star recruits and basically signed the same ones Tedford had lined up(he's added some three stars, but also a few two stars also). I'm loving the non-Embo recruits. Fast and athletic. At this point that's what we need to rebuild. If you expected any of these kids to contribute in a big way next year you're crazy(I'll bet money that Sefo RS and Dillon starts next year).

This is completely correct.

Playing a schedule full of lower level teams allows them to develop talent and depth as you have stated. At the same time as they are doing this they also get the luxury of playing their key players less and reducing the chance for injury. They aren't forced to play guys to the point of exhaustion. If a guy does get a strain or a pull they can sit him until he gets fully recovered instead of sending him out there to further stress the injury or injure something else compensating for the original injury.

This means when they go into a bowl game not only are they more motivated than their oppenents as you stated but they are also healthier.

Embree didn't have a choice in red shirting players. He needed to play as many guys as he could... And the enexperience showed... Along with below avg coaching

I see this as a mixed bag. Yeah we needed to play some kids right away but IMO Embree went overboard with trying to get "his" kids to play and this divided the team. Just a really bad coach. Period.

The big credit that I'll give Embree is that he left MacIntyre in much better shape long term than what he was given. There is a lot of young talent and experience on the roster which will allow MacIntyre to Redshirt more, as well as more time to develop his system with the current players.
