What it came to was - Jimmy Smith won the Super Bowl for the Ravens. The last two plays were all Smith. He doesn't make those (P.I. Be damned), the Ravens don't win.

Probably. But given the choice between getting beat for the game winning TD in the Super Bowl or taking your chances on getting a holding call that still leaves the Niners outside the end zone, it's still the right play...

Easy to say that now because we saw the outcome, but if he had drawn a holding call on 4th down and given SF a 1st and goal with less than 2 minutes left, he would have been the goat if SF went on to punch it in to win the game.

A. I'm not 100% sure the ball was even catchable. 2) if you're going to make a call on Smith on that play, the you also have to call Crabtree for pushing off (I know, offsetting penalties, SF does it over...blah blah blah). Ergo, it was a better no call.

The ball was uncatchable, otherwise it would have been PI vs. holding. Pushing off when? When the defender has his arms wrapped around the receiver, seven yards downfield and the ball is in the air?

I can't believe I have to root for Crabtree over Jimmy Smith in this scenario.

If I'm correctly remembering the replay, the ball was uncatchable because Jimmy pulled his jersey, preventing him from getting into position to catch the ball. Sounds like a hold to me.

I feel as though you've described PI.

Jimmy was holding, but Crabtree was pushing off on Jimmy's helmet as well. Good no call.

Did anyone else think that Jimmy Smith could have been called for a Personal Foul on the play before? He completely leveled Crabtree under the chin with the crown of his helmet. Not sure *precisely* what the rules are this year (was he fair game vs. defenseless, etc.), but I've seen that flagged before.

Plenty of stuff wasn't called, multiple holdings on the safety play, Raven player shoving an official, Sopoaga with a borderline late hit out of bounds on Flacco. In the Super Bowl the referees don't want to impact the game so they're going to let most stuff go and coaches need to be telling that to their players. The Jimmy Smith play just stands out now because it effectively ended the game.

Niners did get lucky with that late hit on Flacco. Thought for sure that would be flagged.

You could have called a hold there but Crabtree can't let himself get held in that situation. It looked like he just ran right to Smith and stopped. Maybe he wanted to get inside, idk, but the qb threw a corner fade. The only ones that know for sure are them. Personally, I liked they let the players decide it. Too many games get decided by refs these days. That play looked out of sync from the snap. If the 9ers folks wanna blame somebody, look in the mirror. I didn't like the fade call.

anyone arguing that wasn't PI or holding is kidding themselves - and refusing to focus on what Jimmy was doing. They use excuses about what crabtree did or didn't do or what happened in different parts of the game.

Crabtree went into his route, and tried to break outside. Jimmy hooked his left arm around Crabtree's waist and grabbed his jersey, effectively preventing him from breaking to the outside. Crabtree tried to push off to break the hold - but wasn't successful in time. The tape was very clear. You can't do what jimmy did.

Biased. Non-niners fans' opinion please

please point out exactly where the tape shows I was wrong. :smile2:

Also, I haven't even gotten into the other stuff. Refs were pussies that refused to call the game both ways - they killed the niners with offsides calls early on key third downs, but on the big plays later in the game refused to call an obvious one on the Ravens.

The "let them play" wish is one I generally follow. But just like in basketball, consistency is what you have to have from a reffing crew. That, and the balls to make the obvious calls when they are there, even on key plays. This crew had neither.

Jimmy played a part in robbing my 49ers of a championship, but if he brings that Super Bowl ring around a couple times this fall (preferably on recruiting weekends) then all will be forgiven. :smile2:

Peter King:

I've watched the fourth-down pass into the corner of the end zone, the Colin Kaepernick-to-Michael Crabtree misfire, with cornerback Jimmy Smith in contact with Crabtree and Crabtee with Smith. It lasts two yards beyond the five-yard bump zone. It's close, but I don't think it was interference. Crabtree was an aggressor there too.

Thanks everyone for completely ignoring this. Found a pic of it. Smith almost knocked Crabtree's helmet off. This was the bigger no-call.
