They've dominated a good conference and have several great OOC wins. They'll get a really high seed.

New Mexico being 2nd in the RPI is a clear example of the RPI being flawed. New Mexico is a solid team, but anyone in touch with reality knows they're in the 10-15 range, not 2nd. OOC they beat UConn and Cincinnati, a team that's sub-.500 in their conference. However, they did manage to lose to South Dakota State on their home court. They've done very well for the most part in the MWC, although scoring 34 in a loss to San Diego State was concerning. They're a solid team, but they rarely get the big win, they have a knack for winning close games (which is not a negative).
It seems like almost every year we hear about how the MWC is "a better conference than (name major conference)" and "doesn't get enough respect." They then get their 3-4 teams in the tourney, one of which advances past the first round and by the sweet 16 they are gone while that conference they were supposed to be better than still has one or more teams still alive.
MWC is a good balanced league with some individual talents and they play some BB that is fun to watch but overall they just don't have the depth of talent to compete with the teams who are truly competing for sweet 16 and better results each year.

Thought of another way, if CU was a 7 or 10 seed, and had to face a 2 seed in the Round of 32, would you rather face, say, Georgetown, Michigan State, Duke or New Mexico? Put me in the New Mexico camp. I'm sure not everyone agrees, but most will.

The whole MWC seems to benefit from a SOS bump within the conference.
As a conference, only UNM and UNLV played top-100 OOC schedules. As a comparison, 7 Pac12 schools played top-100 OOC schedules (although the other 5 schools all played OOC schedules that were 200+). So maybe that's the key to RPI- get everyone in the conference to play soft OOC schedules, build up a strong W/L record (25%), then benefit through the Opponent's W/L portion of the RPI calculation (50%) when you play the other conference teams twice.

Truth be told, I'd love to have a fair round robin schedule. The old 9 team ACC was just fantastic. Hard to take the final Pac-12 standings as complete legitimate indicators of how good/bad everyone is when you've got some teams only playing Arizona or UCLA once, for instance.
That's a good way of looking at it and my answer would also be UNM, hands down. And not that history has any bearing but this is a team that has never won more than 2 games in any one NCAA tournament and as a 3-seed they were destroyed by Washington in the 2nd round a few years ago.

dont forget that SDSU team was a team full of seniors who had played a game at the pit before (vs baylor) and were well aware of how rowdy it could get. Plus nate wolters.

Understood. But when the basis is about New Mexico being ranked #2, it's pretty clearly useable ammo. South Dakota State is nothing special this year, either. Should make the Dance (auto bid), but I expected better from them.
