USC taps FGCU's Andy Enfield as next head coach

Seemed like an unusual hire until I saw he has experience as an NBA assistant as well as at FSU

I see this as more of a decent hire than an overreaction, but still USC jumped on it like a sad puppy.

Dunk City was 10th in the NCAA in % of shots at the rim at 44%. USC only took 31% of their shots at the rim. Be interesting to see if that gap narrows.

Oregon St was the top in the P12 also taking 44% of their shots at the rim. CU took 33% of their shots at the rim.

Will be a fun style of play to add to the conference. We had too many teams plodding and trying to keep games in the 50s. This is the Pac-12. We're supposed to be running and gunning, baby.

Well, PAC 12 bball gets more and more interesting. I'm going to look at it as a positive for CU. The conference is more attractive which makes us more attractive.

What a different brand of bball USC will be watching this coming year. Under O'Neill USC was always in the botton 10% of tempo. FGCU was top 15% in tempo this year.

I dont think this is a bad move for usc at all - they are not a bball school, and may as well be a mid-major basketball program. Solid move for andy, and Im glad he's in the pac12. Could prove to be a bit of an overreaction, but we shall see.

Having a strong conference will help. On the other hand, those LA recruits are a zero-sum game.

For everyone defending this pick including Pat Haden with the "we didn't hire him based on a few weeks"... that's hard to justify, because he wouldn't even be in the conversation otherwise. Not too many people go straight from a low-major to a power conference in the 2nd biggest city in a few weeks. In most cases, he'd atleast make a stop at a Missouri Valley, A-10, or Mountain West school before hitting it big-time. I think this a high-risk, high-reward pick. With Alford, say what you want about the hire, you know what you are getting. Will his style of play work in the Pac-12 or will he adjust. From watch the Florida game, I think he'll have to adjust. Nonetheless, should make USC's visits to Boulder more exciting.

I think Enfield has a far better basketball mind than Shaka Smart. Shaka's basketball philosophy is somewhat organized chaos. Enfield has a good background and uses several different schemes.

My initial reaction was that this was a reaction move on USC's part, but the more that I think about it, the more I like it for them. He's not a flash in the pan - he has NBA coaching experience as well. Their defense was a thing of beauty to watch during the first two rounds of the tourney. Their offense is going to have to be refined, but we can say the same thing about Tad. Plus, his style of play is going to be a huge hit in LA, so that will help with everything there. As for recruiting, you've seen his wife. He can recruit.

I actually like this hire for USC more than I like the Alford one for UCLA.

They play very similar styles because they have to both play what would be described as "riskier styles" to make up for lack of talent. Both run multiple defensive zones and push the ball up the court.

But Shaka Smart has taken his team to a Final 4 and finished 2nd in the Atlantic 10 twice. While Enfield has taken his team to the sweet 16 once and his team was 2nd in the mighty Atlantic Sun Conference (the 24th rated conf this year). Enfield has a long way to go to be put in the same league as Smart. Nobody in the AD Dept had heard of Enfield two weeks ago and Smart wouldn't even take a call from USC.

He can do his x an o's, we will find out if he can recruit...

Andy: Hi recruit, I'm Andy Enfield and this is my model wife, Amanda.
Recruit: Why is she wearing a bikini
Andy: because she is a model
Andy: Is your nose runny? Here use this $100 bill to wipe it. Did I mention I was super rich.
Amanda: Hi big boy, I'm just hanging out in practice with my model friends and we are going to have a bikini pillow fight
Recruit: *jaw on floor*
Amanda: My friends and I are going to be over here eating popsicles, bananas and hot dogs and watch you play basketball.
Recruit: I'm in.

Can't have finished 2nd in A-10 twice since this past season was their first in the A-10. They were CAA before this year.

He might have a better basketball mind, I think Shaka would've been a safer hire(not that he was leaving). I like that his backgrouns isn't the typical basketball coaching lifer. It's an interesting hire to say the least.
