Rutgers' Mike Rice on thin ice

ESPN's "Outside the Lines" has video of him verbally abusing players, using language that is not gonna make him friends with the PC crowd, and coming right to the edge of violence against his players.

Eric Murdock, the former Providence star and 1st round pick, was fired from the program after being a whistle blower (now suing) and the AD only issued a 3-game suspension after hearing the reports and watching the video.

This is a hot mess.

Yeah I'm shocked Rutgers kept this guy employed after the year. Well it probably had to do with $$$$ but still this is a PR nightmare.

The AD is a moron too. Great interview by Jeremy Schaap as well asking the tough questions and basically making him look dumb.

As has been pointed out by others, it's a good thing social media (and even cable TV) didn't exist back in the Bear Bryant days. Can you imagine a player tweeting from the Junction camps? Or a picture being snapped of the conditions?

The AD is going to get canned too.

He should be canned.

The reaction -- we knew what it was going to be. I need to sit here and think about what gives us the ability to be effective going forward in men's basketball, and more importantly, what protects the university. There's a lot of things on my mind right now that I'm thinking through and trying to make sure that whatever decisions I make on a going-forward basis, that we try to make the right one.
- Rutgers AD Tim Pernetti

So basically the AD is saying on one hand that he knew what the reaction would be but now that we have the reaction he is reconsidering his decision. That doesn't make sense, Tim. I'd give him more credit if he said that he didn't consider all aspects of the situation as closely as he should have and he thinks he came to the wrong conclusion rather than defending his earlier decision. Also, the thought process about this being Rice's first offence and the corresponding leniency of Rice's punishment is BS. There should be zero-tolerance for Rice's actions, none. I don't a **** if he was Saint Rice before these incidences--you don't behave in that manner as a coach, period.

If Rutgers doesn't immediately get Danny Hurley on the phone, they've ****ed up beyond all belief.

Great call.

Immediate recruiting into the the parochial basketball powers in New Jersey. Danny coached at St. Benedict's and his dad still coaches at St. Anthony's. Rutgers could compete in the B1G if it did nothing more than lock down those 2 high schools for its recruiting.

Not only that, but he did a great job with Wagner and is working on Rhode Island.

So with this public embarassment what is next in Mike Rice's career. I would not hire him for any job but somebody will.

Does he get an assistants job at a major program, at at mid to low level D1 program. Is he out of D1 entirely. Would a school ever consider hiring him as a HC in the next few years.

Looking at what some others have gotten away with and still gotten jobs nothing would surprise me but on the other hand Rice is a lawsuit waiting to happen and he didn't win as a HC at Rutgers.

Saw someone on twitter (can't remember who now) say Lawrence Frank is a possibility too.

He did get his start (I know he was a manager, didn't play) at Indiana IIRC. So he does have Big 10 familiarity, even if it was a while ago.

If he'd been delivering winning records, he'd take some anger management classes and get hired for next season. His problem is that he's been losing on top of the PR nightmare.

I think he's going to need to drop down in competition level and rebuild from there.

Doubtful as a HC. He actually did a pretty good job at Robert Morris so its not like he's a terrible coach. Probably an assistant somewhere in college or goes to the NBA D-league as an assistant coach.

I heard that Joe Billy Bob Willy is a candidate from a guy who heard it from their buddy's uncle's father's girlfriend's friend, so it's legit.

He'll replace Eustachy at CSU.

Just heard a great idea for Rutgers on the radio.

Call Ben Howland.

Rutgers is a sleeping giant about to enter the B1G.

Howland has won everywhere he's been, including in the east at Pitt. Even at UCLA, some of his top recruits were from the NY metro area.

Would be a perfect fit if Howland was interested.

Maybe he can get a job coaching at a small Indiana high school. Hey ... it worked for Norman Dale.

That's what I've been saying. Howland would be perfect. Rutgers is a complete sleeping giant. The B1G program of NJ/NYC metro/competing in Philly with Penn State. It's not a bad place to be. They had some EXCELLENT teams back in the day, including 30-0 in '76 before a tournament loss. Inexcusable for Rutgers to have not Danced in 22 years.

Rice will land somewhere small when the dust settles in a year or two. He's a good coach and had Rutgers on the right track before he went crazy and his top player was injured. He completely crossed the line - anything physical is NOT ok. I will say, however, that I think society has gone too soft on verbal abuse, but I know that's not PC and I risk getting neg repped into oblivion for saying that. Then again, if anyone recognizes my avatar, you'll recognize the school of thought I come from.
