Additions & subtractions. Are we getting better?

I think so.

Subtractions: Sabatino Chen, Shane Harris Tunks, Jeremy Adams.

Additions: Dustin Thomas, Tre'Shaun Fletcher, Jaron Hopkins.

On paper, the guys coming in represent an upgrade over the guys going out. Not intended as a knock on the guys leaving, more just an observation that the overall talent level seems to be improving.

Adams was as highly regarded coming out of highschool as any of the kids coming in.

Major talent upgrade. It always hurts to lose veterans, but we're talking about 3 consensus Top 150 prospects who were each rated a 4* by at least one major service and all had significant competing scholarship offers.

This is definitely a talent gain. It remains to be seen whether, despite the talent, if we become a better team after trading 21 year olds for 18 year olds.

I disagree. While Adams was a recruit he wasnt as highly regarded at all. http://rivals.yahoo.com/basketballrecruiting/basketball/recruiting/player-Jeremy-Adams-80620. Fletcher is a four star recruit with an offer from UCLA. Hopkins is also a four star with a ton of offers including one from Arizona. Plus these players dont have injury issues, so yes they are an improvement over Adams imo.

consensus #2 player int he state the year he came out. Thomas is rated by the staff as the #8 in Texas, Hopkins the #1, and I dont know about Fletcher.

edit: it is a pita to get rankings this far back.

That state, though, was Mississippi. Adams was highly regarded or he wouldn't have gotten an aTm offer from Turgeon, but he wasn't the level of prospect as our 3 incoming. These guys are all rated a bit higher than Wes Gordon was. Closer to the evals on Dinwiddie.

I'm not trying to downgrade the contributions from the departing guys. They were all good Buffs and represented themselves and the school with honor.

My point is that if you look at the guys coming in, and compare them to the guys leaving, the overall talent level is increasing. If we can do that every year, we will be something special.

You guys do realize that we may have more attrition than this, right? We KNOW we're losing Chen, SHT & Adams. We also have a few weeks to wait out Dre & Spencer. And then we have to hope no one else decides to transfer. And we have to hope everyone is academically eligible.

I saw this thread as a break from stressing out about all that stuff. Thanks for crapping on that. :asshole:

Actually, there does come a point of diminishing returns. If the day comes when we are regularly recruiting one-and-dones, it will be hard to continually upgrade the talent level.

I haven't heard anybody seriously suggest the Mayor would leave. All indications so far are that Dre would be a 2nd rounder. I may be totally off base, but I think we're done losing players. I also haven't heard anything to indicate there could be academic issues.

You shut your whore mouth.

It's hard to predict how the freshmen will play. They're rated fairly high, but there's often a transition period even for highly rated players. I expect 1 or 2 to have a good impact for us next year though.

Regarding Dinwiddie, I really don't see him leaving the program as a sophomore. It was certainly something I would have suspected occurred if he tore it up late in the season, but that really didn't happen. It's incredibly tough to get drafted in the first round, to such an extent that I wouldn't even say he's a lock to get drafted after next season. I haven't even heard anything about him trying to get an estimate from NBA GM's on where he would go in the draft.

Dinwiddie is absolutely a lock to get drafted after next season

He's going to have to become a much better shooter. He's not getting to the free throw line in the NBA at near the same clip as he does at the college level. Is a good but not great athlete. At this point and time, hasn't shown himself to be a pass first PG. Unless that changes, almost certainly translates as a shooting guard at the next level. Will need to have a more significant improvement from his sophomore to junior years, then he did from his freshmen to sophomore years. Certainly has the potential, but has a lot to work on. If he entered this year, would probably go in the 2nd round.

We are also "adding" Gordon and Jenkins who have had a year of college practice...so I think that makes us have a huge upgrade

That should make us better, but not more talented. If that makes any sense. My point being that even though they redshirted, they were part of the class that replaced Brown, Dufault, Tomlinson, etc. There's no doubt that was an upgrade.

Doesn't really make sense because no matter when they came in, they will get their first live action replacing Tunks and Chen. That is a MAJOR upgrade

You are talking out of your ass. 6'6" combo gaurds who can score, get to the line and drop 3's at a close to 40% clip never go to the league.

Like I said, he's not going to get to the line as much in the NBA. Guards are too quick. And he doesn't shoot 3's at close to a 40% clip.... it was around 34%, and 28% since Pac-12 play started. Some of that is probably related to not having another viable scoring option at guard, but Boyle recognizes the main areas of improvement for him are adding 10 pounds or so of muscle so he can be more of a force when driving.... and to work on his shot.

Not saying he won't get drafted, but needs to put in a lot of work for it to happen. The same people that thought Dre was going in the lotto, are claiming Dinwiddie is a lock. Don't get me wrong, the more Buffs that get drafted.. the better it is for the program. It's still incredibly difficult to get drafted in the first round and we are not Kentucky and not likely to churn out first round picks with every successful college player that we have.

Assuming everyone returns, we will be much deeper. The Mayor was on with CL and Krackman today. He said Gordon was the second lead rebounder in practice. He called Jenkins "very athletic." He also sounded like he is coming back but was non committal when asked if he will play all 4 years.

More talented, definitely. But not experienced. Losing three multi-year contributors who played a half dozen games in a major conference tournament and consecutive NCAAs in their career is something that doesn't immediately get replaced. I could see another second half surge needed to keep our bubble afloat in 2014. Wouldn't expect a red hot start like November '12.

every team loses experience every year. We are not alone in this.

I think we'll be as experienced where it matters, and that's with the group that will be finishing games. Tad had 6 guys he could count on to close games last year, and that included 2 freshmen, 2 sophomores, 1 junior, and a senior playing only his 2nd year of P12 ball. Next year, assuming Spencer stays, that becomes 2 juniors, 2 sophomores and 2 redshirt freshmen that have at least spent a year around the program. Spencer and Ski will have more big-game experience than anyone on this year's roster, and with a tournament appearance under their belts, XJ and Scott will be right there with SHT and Chen. We'll still be young, but certainly no less experienced than this year's team.
