Boyle re-working contract

Excellent.

Not only has he earned it, but it sends the right signal to recruits.

Base salary needs to be higher. Biggest weakness on fending off other schools is their ability to offer more security through a higher base rather than incentive clauses which we are currently offering.

no thats not how you should do it... the base salary can stay lowish (or whatever makes him happy) and you can keep the incentives but add a huge buy out... I know we've been burned by buyouts before... but i think we can trust in Tad at this point that the floor wont drop out from underneath him

Ideally they should do what you're describing, but Tad is going to keep getting interest beyond just kicking the tires. What happens when a school offers $1.5M base plus incentives?

On paper, that $1.5M base already looks better than his current contract, and isn't even expensive by current comparisons. UCLA is paying Alford $2.6M a year. I think Tad's base is $750k or so.

From what I've seen, his base is $400k, with incentives to $800k. We can't continue to operate that way and make it so easy to invite a school to massively outbid us.

In the past, Bohn's options with Boyle's contract were somewhat limited due to a number of factors relating to cash flow. But another factor we don't talk much about is the perception issue. CU couldn't be paying its basketball coach more than it paid its football coach. HCMM getting the deal he did to take the football job likely opened things up politically to pay Boyle more in line with his market value.

Agree. We've opened up the wallet in football, time to ante up in basketball.

I think at this point, more money needs to be in the base. An incentive laden contract was fine in the beginning, as we didn't know what Boyle would bring to a major conference. But we've seen what he's been able to do, and the market value for someone of Boyle's caliber is probably at the $1.5 million level (at minimum).

Really makes no sense for Boyle to increase the buyout, if his base isn't increasing.

Would I have laughed my ass off if Tad was getting $1mil in base salary while Embree was getting $850k? Yes I would've.

Let UCLA grossly over-pay for Alford. That's not the "standard" unless the standard is "stoopid". Besides that, they had to, to get any kind of a "name". (and I think they blew it!)

The modern approach, even in big-time contracts, is to keep the base moderate and pay a lot toward incentives, many which can bet met with regular effort and more with outstanding effort. Keeps the coach's efforts focused. No more "Gary Barnett gets paid a ton while playing golf instead of recruiting" longevity-only contracts!

The fact that Tad's contract gets re-worked very year is a good sign the AD knows what's its doing, keeping its head in the game and not over-paying for someone (no disrespect to Tad) who has yet to win a regular season conference title or advance to the Sweet Sixteen a couple of times.

Do whatever needs to be done. Back up the brinks truck, take a fed buyout, whatever. Pay the man.

The perception outside of Boulder is that all a school would have to do is waltz in with a guaranteed $1mil or so per year and Boyle would be on the next plane. Remember, I said perception. I heard these exact sentiments when a particular local college was searching for a new HC.

I'm sure there are folks other than media and fans who still see things that way.

Pay the man.

We get spoiled quickly, no?

It's all relative. What you've bolded above may be the standard for UCLA, Washington or Arizona. Taking Colorado to back to back tourney appearances, and winning 69 games in 3 years is equally as impressive, if not more, than taking UCLA to the Sweet Sixteen a couple of times. Even Steve Lavin accomplished that feat.

Keep in mind, we were 10 minutes away from a Sweet Sixteen appearance ourselves last year.

6 figure base salary with incentives

We really need to raise Boyle's salary and total compensation to at least top 5 in the pac 12. He deserves it. He hasn't finished better than 5th in conference (yet!), but he's made CU relevant in basketball, something no coach has EVER done at CU on a consistent basis in the modern era.

Just look at the attendance figures from Bzedelik's last year to Boyle's first year, from Boyle's first year till now, what a great improvement! We are selling out games against Wofford! We need to pay him ~$1.5MM.

If he keeps this up, the big dogs will start coming, and I want Boyle coaching CU basketball for as long as he wants. He could become a legend here, and we need to start paying the man and his assistants if we want to continue our success on the bball court.

Also, we need to give him whatever he wants recruiting wise, he is getting closer each year to landing that elusive out of state 5 star guy. I would hate to see him leave because he doesn't think he can get the 5 star players to come to CU.

CU hoops has another historic season.
Allbuffs freaks out that Tad isn't getting paid enough.
Tad gets reworked contract.
Allbuffs continues to freak out that Tad isn't getting paid enough.
Rinse. Repeat.

It's people like you that... What's the word?.... Dilutes this board.

Big dogs been here already. Tad's already a legend and he gets all he needs for recruiting---he does not appear to live and die for 5 stars, who are one-an-done types, but takes pride in finding the diamond in the rough or developing a Top 150 recruit into a Top 50 player.

He and staff are well-paid and get to live in Colorado---bonus! Think an extra mill makes LA more livable for a Colorado guy and family? Plus, the AD watchs closely---there's a reason his contract is constantly/annually re-negotiated.

Why? Billy Donovan makes more than Will Muschamp (I think). Isn't Florida a football school? Obviously Tad isn't Billy Donovan but I could see the scenario where the football program continues to flounder and basketball is even more successful, couldn't Boyle make more?

Nice word choice.

Sure. But basketball has only been profitable for the last 2 years. Donovan won 2 national titles before the NBA and Kentucky made plays for him. If Tad does something similar, I can see the political will to pay him more than the football coach. But it's a major culture change for CU that I don't think we're ready for. Hell, even a lot of the hardcore fans who waste half their lives on Allbuffs are just now deciding to learn about basketball and go to some games.

The yearly re-negotiation shows a couple of very positive things.

One is that Tad and Bohn and Co. have a good enough relationship that they can sit down each year, evaluate where they are at, and make the neccessary adjustments in the contract in a positive and constructive manner. We always assume that people are getting along but lots of places that's not the case. This is a good indication that here it is.

Secondly the message to Tad (and the fans) is that the school is going to do what it takes and continue to do what it takes to keep him comfortable here and be competitive within the situation they have. As the program develops under Tad his contract continues to develop while giving him the security to take a longer term view of the job. As mentioned above Tad isn't about the money as much as he is about the situation, the respect he gets, and his ability to be in "the right place" for him.

I would be very happy if we have this same thread show up every year for the next decade. It would mean that CU basketball is doing well with a happy Tad at the helm.

fify...ticket prices will need to go up for a profit to be made.

I can still go to games outside my partial season ticket package for $5 or scalp tix for face value or less. When Oregon State tix go for $50 a pop, then it will be profitable.

buffenuf - men's hoops was profitable the last 2 years. When what you describe happens, it will turn into a major cash cow.

I don't think there's any question next year will be the most profitable season in CU hoops history. They'll increase season ticket prices so the # will hopefully not be 6,666 season ticket holders. That means more single-game prices

I agree with everything you said and I even said he's nowhere near what Donovan has accomplished. I just wouldn't rule out the day where this actually does happen. If Embree were still here, Boyle would be making more.
