(9) Wichita State vs (1) Louisville, 4:09 pm
(4) Michigan vs (4) Syracuse, 6:49 pm

Wish the tournament could hypothetically be compacted a bit. I'm about as big a college basketball fan as they come, and obviously I'd be really into it if CU was still alive, but I just feel like it drags on. The first weekend is so exciting, and then it just seems too prolonged.

The ref's will foul out the shockers big guys. It's all about the TV ratings.

Yep. Five fouls to one so far, and Russ Smith is allowed to take a couple of steps with the ball, leave his feet, land, take a few more steps before being fouled. No travel. Wichita is playing 5 on 8 today.

Pitino has spent most of the first half on his feet, with his feet on the court inside the lines at Wichita's offensive end. I did't know you could do that.

With a minute left in the half, the foul count is L'ville 9 - WSU 7. Seems to me that thus far it's been a pretty evenly called game.

But then I didn't make a knee-jerk judgment on the officiating after 5 minutes of playing time.

Will you still feel that way in a couple of weeks ... when it hits you that we have to wait a full 7 months before CBB starts again?

I don't really see it that way because after the first weekend it starts up again just 4 days later on Thursday, which is reasonable because the teams have to travel. The gap between the Elite 8 and and the Final 4 is almost a week but that's simply due to the fact that there's only 3 games left at that point and playing the national semifinals on something like a Thursday night just wouldn't work very well.

Smith now has 3 ... so much for the refs slanting towards L'ville.

as usual, i'd pull for both teams in one of the games, WSU or Lousiville. i like Beilein, but too many pompous UM people in Boulder and not a Cuse fan at all. if Michigan is SO great, why are there so many of them in Boulder?

it's like when the Red Sox or Yankees are in the World Series, all ratty prep school stoners in Boulder show up in bars as "baseball" fans.

all the Michigan fans are die hards this week around CU....bleh.

Why does Steve Kerr sound bored out of his skull doing these games? He sounds like he's doing color for a chess match.

Some nobody that's score 16 points all year is bailing out Looeyville? I'm telling, you playoffs are not the answer.

Marshall needs to get Hall back in the game. You can't have that other big man shooting airballs from the line.

I did a flight from Wichita, KS to Atlanta on Friday. 100% full of Shocker fans. We also had 4 more charter flights on 137 seat 737's full of WSU fans so the gate agent told me. They were a great group. I am rooting for them.

Um.... thats all. :smile2:

Very dedicated fanbase. They were in the NIT with us two years ago and I remember watching a home game of theirs on tv and that place was absolutely rocking.

Tough call against WSU on the held ball. I have to hand it to them they did much better than I expected today, I thought Louisville would win easily. WSU's big men did a great job on Dieng.

Wichita State showed they belonged. This was not a "Cinderella". Louisville just wore them down. It's almost impossible to play at the energy needed to compensate for Louisville's athleticism a full 40 minutes.

Marshall proved his coaching chops. Other than pressing when his team was dead on its feet & giving up that open 3, he about coached a perfect game.

Very tough call. Refs were very quick to blow the whistle to signal for a jump ball. You hate to see a game decided in such an anti-climactic fashion. Oh well...still a fun game to watch.

Two things (at least) the NCAA rules committee need to work on and clarify in the offseason:

1) the "jump ball" rule ... it gets called far too quickly IMO in key situations when a player clearly has possession and the defensive player merely reaches in and touches the ball. Possession means having two hands on the ball and at least having co-equal possession ... and that's often not the way it's being called. It essentially rewards a defensive player for reaching in (which used to be called a foul) ... especially if his team happens to have the possession arrow in its favor.

2) the charge/blocking call :bang:. There is absolutely no consistency on it ... and hasn't been for years. But it seems that this season it has been worse than ever. It used to be that the defensive player had to unquestionably have established position ... both feet planted and not sliding over once the offensive player is ready to launch himself at the bucket. Now they allow the player to slide over, sometimes even when the offensive player is already in mid-air. It's bull**** and it needs to be changed.

But I'm not going to hold my breath that anything will happen.
