Is Connor Wood our Saviour after all?

Most reports indicate Connor is emerging as the #1 candidate to lead the Buffs next year pending results of the spring scrimmage and Sefo's arrival in the fall.

Many of us had Kool-Aid overload when he arrived and felt let down when he saw action last year. Who knows if it is the new schemes, more maturity, better coaching, the light finally coming on, or a mix, but it sure seems like he could be the real deal after all.

Given that earlier many of us were depressed by the early reports in camp and the fact that none of the QBs had initially separated themselves I thought it would be fun to look up Connor's Rivals' profile from HS:

On the Hoof: Physically, Wood has a great quarterback body. He has broad shoulders, is strong through the chest, has a sturdy base and should have the strength to take a college pounding. Wood is similar in size and build to current Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.
Needs Improvement: At times, Wood doesn’t consistently get good spin on his football, particularly on vertical routes. He has a tendency to hang the football in the air too long. He will need an adjustment period to deal with the speed of the college game after playing at a low level of football in high school.
Most Impressive: Wood has very good arm-strength, but what really makes him special is his athleticism. His high release combined with good size benefit him as a passer. Though he is a big, physical prospect, Wood can really run, is mobile in the pocket and is very comfortable throwing on the run and outside of the pocket. As far as the physical tools that you look for in a quarterback, there is very little that Wood is lacking.
Conclusion: Wood will not be asked to step in right away at Texas and compete for a starting job and that should do wonders for his development. With the tools that he has to work with, Wood has the potential to develop into a premier Big 12 quarterback.

Is he British or something?
Sorry about that but my Mac always warns me of misspellings and it seems to default to the Queen's English. I hope he is not British b/c I can't think of any successful QBs in the history of football who were born in the UK.

Of course that might change if London gets an NFL franchise which is supposedly a realistic scenario.

You realise, of course, they will beknownst as the London Wankers. What will their colours be?

To the question: we won't know until he plays a couple games and faces some adversity. We've seen a lot of practice field phenoms the last few years.

You don't think facing a vicious pass rush and lock down DB play in our scrimmages counts as adversity?

Hmm, it seems in the past couple years we heard 2 things,...that Connor was doing well on the Scout team and would have been the savior if not for having to sit out, and CU coaches constantly had to scale back the playbook for our eligible QBs etc. Maybe Connor just better doing something different than what the last staff tried to run on O is a factor. Just glad to see he and Hirsh appear to be progressing.

Savior connotes he will do this single-handedly. The offense will rely heavily on the QB, but if the protection is as bad as a 10 cent condom and the receivers are slow - he will suck regardless. And if our D is as bad as I expect, we're gonna have to score a ton of points so here's hoping we have a functional offense!!!

If anyone is our savior it is the new coaching staff. Connor Wood is the same guy he was last year. He just now has coaching around him that can help him mature as opposed to expect him to do it by himself.

To say the he is the same guy as last year suggests that he hasn't improved at all which isn't true, or from what we can tell thus far.

Wood also looked good last year during spring ball. Wood received the same coaching Tyler Hansen received and Hansen played well. Scherer is a respectable QB coach. A bit premature calling Wood the savior. Anyone can look good when you just seat back in the pocket and throw the ball without the fear of getting hit or a creative DC game planning against you. Hirschman beat him out last year when Webb was benched last year.

so, who should start?

Tyler Hansen played well relative to his limitations. The guy got a shot in the NFL that is how well he played.

Relative to his limitations?? That's like saying you have nice breath, for a dog.

He got invited to camp and didn't make the roster. In any case I care more about what a player did while at CU, not after he's gone and Tyler was a good kid who dealt with plenty of BS, but he was a mediocre college QB.

Bigbang, if Hirsch made a sudden stop, your head would go right up his ass. To be honest, I don't give a damn who starts. I'd just like the guy who makes the team the best they can be.
