Wood vs. Hirsch, Spring Conclusions

Well this has been a highly debated topic throughout Spring when we first thought Dillon was in the driver's seat and many of us were disappointed to find that noone emerged early and Dillon appeared far from ready for prime time.

Now it appears it has become a 2 horse race (given that Webb is now out of the picture as well) between Hirsch and Wood.

Now that Spring is over and the Spring Game has concluded, what do we think HCMM should do going into the summer?

Personally I think Wood's performance has earned him the outright 1st team slot going into the summer. This in my opinion would let the players know who their leader is going into summer workouts, reward Wood for his improved performance and send a message to Hirsch, et. al., that Wood is the man to beat. I prefer this to going into the summer with 2 or 3 1st team QBs.

How about you guys?

I think Wood was pretty good, and Hirshman was also good today. Wood looks like he's in the drivers seat for sure, but again, no live bullets.

Hirschman may want to pressure them into making a decision since he's in the driver's seat if he's considering a transfer.

Good point. Have you heard anything that makes you think if he is not #1 going into fall that he would transfer? I would be kind of surprised b/c he has put in a lot of time at CU and is as close as he has ever been to winning the job outright.

I'd be surprised, but if he wants to go to graduate school, now would be a good time. Honestly, I doubt he'd leave if he's the the #2. Too many things can happen.

Dillon clearly needs a lot more seasoning, so I'd expect him to see that clearly and motivate himself to get better.

The qB coach seems to be the real deal.

Wood and Hirsch appear far and away better at this point. I love how effortless Wood throws the deep ball. He seemed a bit more comfortable today, but Hirsch looked good too, not slighting his performance.

I caught most of the game on the Pac12 Network, but missed a good chunk. From what I saw, Wood appeared to be more accurate, composed, and had quite a bit more zip on his passes than Hirsch did. From my vantage point, I felt that Wood was quite a bit better today, and appears to have improved quite a bit from last year.

Didn't see all of it, will watch the whole thing later but I did see enough to make me feel like we are on the right track at least.

It's easier if you aren't at risk of getting driven into the turf but the QBs looked much better today than at any time last year. They looked more confident, like they were comfortable with what they were expected to do. It looked like they were much smoother at getting communications handled and everyone getting set to go quickly but without hurrying to borrow a John Wooden term.

With that Hirsch did look better and much improved from prior appearances but Wood looks to be the overall better talented, better skilled QB. There are certain things he can do naturally that Hirsch has to strain to do. Based on this I would hope and expect that Wood is at least in the lead for the #1 if not in it at the moment.

Wood had the better game today and seemed more comfortable running or throwing it away when a play broke down. Just based on their play on the field, I think Wood has separated himself a bit.

I will say this for Hirschman, the guy is fiery and the players seem to really respond to him. I was on the West sideline, so didn't see as much of Wood on the sidelines, but Nick seems to really command respect from his teammates.

Makes no sense to name a leader or clear starter at this point. Both QBs still have a lot to learn.

Wood's quotes after the game seem to indicate that he and Hirsch are a top 2 and that this will be good as each of them can take leadership roles for summer workouts and 7ons. Wood looks to be in the lead, but it doesn't look like the competition is settled.

Most of the offense is not installed, bad idea to name a starter right now.

Wood looks clearly ahead in my mind. His footwork is better, more zip on his ball, just looks more physically prepared. He's the first QB we've had in a while that looked the right size for the BCS.

Meanwhile, Dillon looks like a stick figure. Wow, dude needs 25 pounds to even be close to take a season's worth of pounding. He looked rattled and a little shifty in the pocket. But all that said, he's got a very strong arm. He's a slinger, kinda side-armed, which they might try to fix. I like his potential, but he's at least a year away in my mind.

Wood by a slight margin. Both Hirsch and Wood have arms we haven't seen since Detmer. I am so tired of watching wiffle ball velocity passes I could puke.

Wood was clearly the best, and I didn't think it was close. Lets hope he keeps that trajectory

One of them will start, both of them will play during the year, neither of them are the difference makers we need.

Doooooooooooooom

P Rich speed helped Wood look a little bit better. Competition is tied in my opinion heading to the fall.

Your about the only one with that opinion BB2, if P Rich would have held on to a few more passes Wood could have had a much better day.

If P Rich was on the black team, Hirschman stats would have been better. Wood and Hirschman played well, too early to name a starter, still a long ways to go.

Funny how you completely ignore practices in your opinion.

BB2 has always been a shill for Hirchman. Now, I want the best guy out there. RIght now, from what is told, it looks like Wood is the leader. Doesn't look like it is a complete stomping, which..maybe is good. Hopefully good because both have stepped up quite a bit from last year. But still, I have to hope that BB2 is a girl, because if I didn't know better I would say BB2 is blowing Hirch and sticking up for her boyfreind. it is just....beyond what anyone else sees to the level that BB2 is behind Hirch. And i hate having a jaded view of Hirch because I want the best person to win the job, and for the second place person to be a much more than merely capable backup. I want both to do well. I just don't understand BB2 and how....he defends Hirch. I would like him/her to simply say "Look, I am the best freind of irch and want to support him and want him to be the starter." Would just giv eus the proper context of....what the relationship is. And there is on, beleive me. BB2 is not like this for anyone but Hirch, and has been that way since Hirch was being recruited IIRC.

Agree with his footwork that in my mind is the biggest knock on Hirsch, would love to see some really pressure brought to see what happens.

Was at the game. From what I saw, Wood had the better game. There's an intangible with him too that I sensed and didn't get from the others. Whether its poise or confidence I don't know. Just a sense.

And the guy can huck the ball. With WRs with speed a guy who can bomb, teams will legitimately have to cover the entire field. That may be the best news out of the spring game.

Wood does things more smoothly, more naturally, with less effort than Hirsch does. This is not a knock against Hirsch just a statement of talent and skills.

The positive in all this is that last season the only guy who seemed to be able to play was the guy who lacked the natural talent to make plays in Webb. In comparison both Wood and Hirsch have better arms than Webb and are at least as good or better (Wood) in terms of running the ball.

We of course won't know until we actually see real action with defenses that are allowed to hit the QB and that can run things that the QBs haven't been practicing directly against but it looks like be may not only have a more talented starter but also backup than we had starting last year. The improvement may not be enough to turn us into a winning team but we will be a better team this year than last. (It would be hard to be worse so that isn't a major kool-aid statement.)

I was thinking the same thing while watching yesterday. Having 3 QBs with legit arms is something we haven't seen in a long, long time around here. Finally the QB competition seems to be a good thing, and not about who sucks the least.
