CSU stadium

According to Jack Graham they're spending $20mil on just designing the stadium. Graham-
We had a good basketball season, not a great one. If we had gone to the Sweet 16, that would have been a great year. Those are the standards going forward. The football team, give them a couple more years – and I mean that in all sincerity, take a patience pill – and I promise you McElwain is going to have us in the top 20

sweet 16 and top 20 football ranking,...

You can't blame the man for an aggressive vision. CSU produced a high-performing basketball team this year, and have generated top 20 football teams in the past. It should be the expectation--especially when you're rallying donors.

There is nothing wrong with athletic department leadership establishing specific, achievable, important, time bound goals that align with the desires of the delusional CSU fan base.

Captain Jack is firmly on the hook to display the integrity and skills necessary to deliver on this commitment.

Thats some balls out leadership on display. Bravo.

Setting goals is important, just find it odd there is no mention of winning the conference. That is where it should always start IMO.

Fort Collins is a nicer and less isolated place than Boise, ID. If Boise State can be Boise State, there's no logical reason CSU can't aspire to that. Also, I agree - you've gotta do the big vision thing when you're talkin' to the donors.

There are a lot of places that are nicer and less isolated than Boise, most of them don't win 10 games a year. There's more to it than scenery.

Boise State is open admission and had an AD that was breaking rules to win. Cheating wins. And if you do really win big, then the juice is definitely worth the squeeze. Do you think Alabama, Auburn, Miami or Ohio State regret any of their cheating ways?

Graham does not care about a career as an AD. He will do what's necessary to win (draw your own conclusion on what that entails).

Boise State athletic director Gene Bleymaier, the man behind the iconic blue turf at the school's football stadium and credited with a large role in the team's rise to national prominence, has been let go as the school faces sanctions because of violations in the football program and other sports --ESPN August 2011

I must have missed that entirely. Not sure what he did, but I don't recall Boise ever getting hit with sanctions - did they?

consider a little math

assume that the architects and civil engineers have an effective billing rate of around $150/hour. (I work in the contract engineering business and this is a realistic rate).

if we assume a 2 year design phase, that's 30 - 35 engineers working full time, to get to $20MM just in labor, which seems realistic to me (at least it's not out of reality).

First post and I think I may have actually added value to the discussion.

Is it typical to spend that much on the design?

I highly doubt they're contracting on a T&M basis for a project of that scale. If they are, they're fools.

I highly doubt they're contracting on a T&M basis for a project of that scale. but for them to imagine that just because they build a new stadium they are going to suddenly have 43,000 people come to their games, they're fools.

fify

I think they are delusional. Graham may actually get this thing built. From an athletic standpoint I don't think they believe they have a choice but they are fighting a battle they have already lost.

Major college athletics is all about the money and they are out of it. They can talk all they want about being ranked and other big-time goals but there is a limit to where they can go and how much money they have to get there.

They are in a conference where their total yearly media revenues are less than 10% of what teams in major conferences are getting. Their per game ticket revenues are about 1/4 of what CU makes and CU is way behind the big hitters who fill 70,000+ seat stadiums at higher ticket prices than we have.

They can talk about Boise but Boise is in a situation where they don't have to answer the same questions about money since Boise is the big show in the state. Even then where has it gotten Boise?

CSU isn't going to get an invite to a big money conference, they just don't have the fan support to justify it. The fans have proven that they are not going to come out in numbers for the product that CSU puts on the field, even when Sony had they ranked they didn't average 30k.

I don't see much chance that they end up with anything other than a very expensive white elephant with a lot of empty seats for many years.

Yeah, there is. I was talking about recruiting. CSU can sign JUCOs too, and Lubick had it going on there for a while. Their new coach is really bright and an F'in bulldog. IMO.

Not so sure CSU can take as many fliers on recruits as Boise can.

What has McElwain done to deserve the praise? I don't see it

Well he's smart enough to figure out that he should keep his offense vanilla during he spring game to counteract Boulder spies

10% of net construction cost is par for the course. Thats just for design development/construction documents. That does not include preliminary design, compliance (environmental assessment), and supplementary services (geotech, etc.). So, if you assume a $200 million stadium, $20 million is on the low end.

I wish them all the best in building the damn thing. If we have to play them let's get it back on campus. I am forever done going to Denver for that game. Not worth the flight for that ****** experience. I'd consider flying out for a game in ft. Fun. They are talking out of their collective arses, but if it gets the game out of Denver more power to them.

But we DON'T have to play them.

It's budget of about 8% - 10% of the estimated project costs. That's about "normal", if there is such a thing. This may be high, but it covers the design changes and things that happen on a project of this size.
