Andre's Gone....What's your prediction for 13-14??

Now that dre has made his decision (best of luck - it'd be cool if you landed with the jazz!) what are your expectations/wildest hopes and dreams for the 2013/2014 basketball season?

I'm hoping that we get to the sweet 16, but obviously without dre that's going to be pretty difficult.

As far as the conference goes, the tourney crown, and a top 4 finish in the regular season and a 21 win season overall.....

I think that Jelly & XJ will do a fair job corralling some of the boards that dre usually got, so we wont be way down on his production to start the season.
 
I think we can be a top 25 team next year and not just for a week or two. We won't have any seniors, but I expect Booker and Dinwiddie to take over from a leadership perspective.

We can still get to the Sweet 16 or better, depends on how our RS and true freshmen develop and matchups in the tourney. I hope Gordon can be a dominant force on defense! We still have three potential NBA guys (Dinwiddie lottery, Scott/XJ are 1st rounders). We are still very talented with most of our bench rated top 150 in various scouting services.

Looking at last year's tourney, was Florida Gulf Coast a great team? Oregon? No, but both teams made it to the Sweet 16 last year.

Boyle will finally have some depth for the first time ever, and we will destroy teams in Boulder if we decide to run and play more trapping defense.

Losing Roberson hurts, and we won't have another guy average the number of rebounds/game as him, but I think our offense can be much better with all the options now. Hopefully no more 9 minute scoring droughts!

Our defense might suffer a little in the beginning as guys learn their role, but we will be much improved, as all Tad's teams do, as the season progresses.

Should be a fun year. Lots of potential. Lots of youth, but lots of opportunity to still be the best CU team in recent memory.
 
My expectations haven't changed much at all. XJ, Jelly, Gordon should make for a very solid front court. We lose depth, but we can replace the production.

I think we'll win 23 games before March Madness, and hover between a top 15-25 team all year. 6 seed in the tourney, with Sweet 16 appearance. Once we beat up on Kansas we'll solidify our spot in the Top 25 for the rest of the year.

Though we lose Dre, everyone comes back a year stronger. Wish Adams was still here mainly for his defensive presence. Booker and Spencer will be unstoppable on their good days. XJ will put on 10 pounds of muscle and become an absolute beast this year, mark my words. Josh will put on more weight and work on that right hand hook to become even better offensively.

My prediction will hinge on a few players putting in solid minutes and perhaps surprising.

1) Gordon being a defensive and rebounding presence down low. If he could average around 7-8 rebounds and 2 blocks per game, plus stand his ground against the other bigs in the Pac 12, we're in business.

2) We'll need one of the incoming Freshman to come in ready to go and give us 10+ points per game. I think it's going to be Dustin Thomas because his 3 point shot looks pure and will be great in pick and pop scenarios.
Also, he should be able to play at the PF position where we're short-handed so he should see plenty of minutes.

3) Hopkins is my wild card. I've seen the mixtapes, but I've heard he's pretty good and dynamic with the ball as well. If he can play solid defense, he may come in as the first man off the bench, AKA Sabatino Chen. I'm hoping he can be as or more productive as the recruit we lost to California last year, Tyrone Wallace.

???) I was going to include either Talton or Stalzner stepping up to assume the back up point guard, but if Hopkins shows that he's really a 4 star recruit, I see these guys getting only spot minutes again.
 
Just as we hoped Dre coming back would mean he'll work extra hard in the offseason, I think him leaving will inspire the entire team to work even harder. We'll have some growing pains and dumb losses for sure, but the optimist in me wants to believe this is just what it is like to have a great basketball program...we get turnover and fill empty spots with new talent.

I do feel like this somewhat put Boyle in a hard spot with recruiting, but it is what it is.
 
Same as if Roberson was returning. Beat KU in Boulder, contend for the PAC-12 regular season and tourney titles, and get to the sweet 16. We return 4 out of 5 starters, and will still be younger than last season. Next year's team will be deep.
 
Ahh, I hadn't really thought about how much our depth is going to change things! Can't wait for next season!
 
It seems strange to be able to say this , but I agree with those whose expectations are the same as they were with Dre. We'll lose a lot in terms of man defense, but our team defense could be just as good with a shot-blocker like Gordon in the middle. Offensively, I don't think we lose much, since most of the youngsters make up in talent what they lack in experience. On the boards, I think we'll see guys put a body on their man and take more of a team approach. XJ, Scott, Gordon, Thomas and Fletcher should all help offset what we lose with Dre. It'll be a slightly different approach without Dre, but not necessarily a less effective one.
 
I think the ceiling is still very high but I think the floor just dropped quite a bit. Lose somebody in the front court for any length of time and we might have some serious problems.

Collectively they'll have 20 fouls to give, instead of just 5 with Dre. :smile2: Seriously though, since we're talking about 2 sophs and 3 freshman that will be a concern. Dre could board and play tight defense, all while avoiding foul trouble for the most part.
 
I think the expectations are the same as with 'Dre. Push for an undefeated home record, contend for a top-3 spot in the Pac-12 and a 5-7 seed in the tourney with a run into (at least) the second weekend.
 
Getting to the Sweet-16 is about seeding more often than not. 24-25 wins going into the tournament and we would be sitting pretty to make a post season run. I think we can do it.

Absolutely. Inconsistency will be an issue too. Fortunately, the depth minimizes the downside a little bit. Tad can ride the hot hand and substitute freely when guys start to get in foul trouble.
 
We will see more of Ben Mills, like it or not. Frontcourt depth will be an issue.

My expectations have definitely dropped a bit, but not too much. We are bringing back 4 solid starters, not to mention Tad's deepest and most talented bench yet. The starting 5 should be: PG Dinwiddie (15.3 ppg), SG Booker (12.4 ppg), SF Johnson (8.9 ppg), PF Gordon (RSFresh) and C Scott (10.2 ppg). That's a pretty solid starting five, that most coaches in the country would be drooling over. I do believe that either Fletcher/Jenkins could come in and make a push for the SF spot, moving Johnson to the PF. That would allow Gordon to come off the bench and keep us out of foul trouble.

Anyways, back to expectations, I think that we will definitely win 20+ games. I also think we should finish in the Top 3 of the Pac-12 and will be a 6 seed or higher for March Madness. I am really hoping that we can go beyond previous years and really start showing solid improvement. In my realistic dreams that I think are reachable I hope for: National Title! But really, 25 regular season wins, the Finals of the Pac-12 Tourney, a #3/4 seed and a Sweet 16 run.
 
Even without Andre, the team as a whole is going to be far more talented next year than this years team. This will be Tad's best team, and I expect 24 regular season wins.
 
I'm very optimistic. Expect this to be a top 25 caliber team (at least flirtation with the rankings throughout the year) and win a game or two in the Big Dance. I don't expect Dre's absence to be devastating assuming our depth is remotely as good as advertised.

I hope you guys are being sarcastic because there is no way Ben sees more than a couple minutes here and there all year.
 
I think that there is no doubt that the team will be better next year than last ... and improve in terms of conference finish and national rankings when all is said and done. We would be stronger with Andre than without him. They will miss his defense, intensity and experience. But the guys who play the minutes that he would have this year will be more productive offensively and just about as good rebounding. Gordon is a key to all of this and I think that his interior defense and rebounding will be not far off or what Andre would deliver.

That said, having both would be better, but the cupboard is not bare ... in fact Andre's minutes and overall importance to the team would have been much less important nest year if he stayed then his presence was the last three years. And, with the Mayor blossoming into a first round pick, that might have be a negative factor for Andre's draft prospects had he stayed. So all is good ... it's about the PROGRAM now, not individuals ... something that comes only with a great Coach and staff. Let's root for Andre to be drafted by the right team. I look forward to following his career in the future.

:yeahthat: Maybe even slightly better without Dre? As great as he was on "D" and the boards defensively, face it, despite averaging 10 ppg, he was almost a liability on offense with TO's, lack of assists and sketchy at the line. He really didn't add much in the half court, lacking in both passing and shooting consistency, as well as having pretty average handles. I still think he made a wrong choice and would love to have his leadership, hops and "D", but I think what's coming in with the five freshmen and coming back with XJ and Jelly a year older and stronger, the stats holes Dre leaves will be very effectively filled.
 
You guys are nuts. He was an elite rebounder and defender. You just can't expect to match that production from other guys stepping up. I don't think his offense was great, but he didn't throw up shots trying to get in rhythm. I think it is a big loss.

It's only a standard response to absolutist, 'tard remarks, like: "...no way Ben sees more than a couple minutes..." and "If he plays significant minutes, then the guys we signed aren't as good as we hoped." Both of which arrogantly substitute one's personal judgemnt and preferences for the coach's judgment.

None of "the guys we signed" plays the "5" and there are certainly teams for whom the only answer to their size is CU's own size. Not even Tad can teach "height"!

I think we all agree that it's a big loss, but we're also getting to the point as a program where you start to expect these kinds of losses and just have to fight through it. In this case, you have to look at what we're going to be gaining in talent next year, as well as the additional experience gained by the other 4 starters. Next year should be the first time we see the talent and depth for Tad to truly run the system he wants to. With or without Dre, I think we all agree we're short of the top tier of teams, but certainly right there on the verge of the top 25, if not already there. In either case, that probably equates to a round of 32 or Sweet 16 team.

The team will be better next season without Roberson. Roberson is a great defensive player but offensively he was a liability.


G- Mayor, Talton, Stalzer
SG- Booker, Hopkins
SF- Johnson, Jenkins, Fletcher
C- Scott, Gordon, Mills
PF- Thomas

I will like one more player added, a physical presence inside the paint. I will predict about 22 wins and maybe a sweet 16 appearance.
