When hired in December, new Colorado head football coach Mike MacIntyre said he would be committed to recruiting the best players in Colorado. At least one local high school coach is already impressed with that commitment.

This confirms a lot.

Our program is in much better hands now. So much better.

Recruiting 3A schools is just too much work.

You know what's even worse to me? All that talk about the 1990 national championship, the Buff family, etc., etc.... and they couldn't be bothered to say "hi" to Trace Gray and ask the Silver Creek coaches about him? Trace's dad was on our 1990 team. Trace probably wasn't a Pac-12 guy (ended up at CSU-Pueblo), but you don't know unless you do the scouting work. Unreal.

I have no idea what school he is referencing but things are changing.

JE didn't get it. He is obviously a good NFL position coach or he wouldn't keep getting jobs in a league that demands results right now.

The problem is, and maybe this is why so many NFL guys who were successful head coaches didn't make it in the college game, is that the lifeblood of a college program is recruiting and recruiting is built on hard work, patience, and most importantly relationships.

Embree had the attitude of show me a kid that can help me right now and maybe we can talk. M2 knows that you build the relationships with the coaches, put in the time, and only then will they feed you the kids who are good enough to help you.

As the article implies the other three guys that are mentioned may not be good enough to recruit to CU. If not, the coaches will be fine with that because they will believe that M2 and staff at least took the time to give them a fair look. The next time the school comes up with a kid who is good enough the coaches will tell the kid and his parents that "Those CU guys are straight shooters, at least give them a listen." The HS coaches also tend to have strong connections to other HS coaches. 3A doesn't produce a lot of BCS level talent but when they do it is important that the coaches have heard good things about CU from the other coaches.

Every time Embree or one of his staff gave a HS coach the brush off it didn't just kill that school for them it spread throughout their area and league.

Nik mentions the 1990 team. I'm not going to go back and do a breakdown but that team had a number of very important players who came from schools that were not top classification schools in their states.

I consider what MMac's staff is doing just good public relations, which is really important right now for this program. NFL coaches pretty much despise that idea because PR doesn't do squat for them on the field. Big programs can probably get away with being snobby as well, and probably a combo of both ideas contributed to Embree's strategy. He still saw CU like he did in '91--that a kid should thank his lucky stars CU is even looking at them.

In their defense, that drive to Longmont is a bitch.

Maybe if somebody had put together video, loaded it on the system and told the coaches where to go find it to watch, maybe that wouldn't have been too much effort for them?

On the other hand, probably not....

who else wanted Jon Embree as their coach? not a name in any other coaching search. we can't act surprised here.....i love the guy and i think he is great human being...but it was a hire made by an AD who had to save his job to appease the "Mac Forever" donor base. a lot of people thought like that.

love jon and eb, and they will be alright....you have to get fired about 3 times to lose the NFL paycheck.

stupid hire at the time and i said so. Bohn saved his ass, bought some time with it....Tad has saved him.

Hawk we got unlucky, Embree was a straight dumb hire in football terms. peoples complain about phil distefano and bruce benson....instead of mike bohn....in Hawk's last year...which was horrible and undeserved but the real crime was embree.

i love the guy but we were terrible.

ps, as someone who went to grad school and taught at CU for 10 years and grew up a buff....i think Benson is much worse for CU than Phil. Benson is a creature of the energy business, he's not a CU guy. Phil may be pansy wansy to a lot of you...and not football first but he does care about CU. i know that. Benson is weird.

he's failing CU at fundraising....and that's why they hired him. first CU prez minus a PhD..which doesn't mean a lot but he was hired to produce money...and he ain't.

Not super knowledgeable on this front, but isn't fundraising the main job for most college presidents?

The numbers disagree with this assertion.

I know the "academics" hated the Benson hire but he is a CU guy, and the CU system has set fund raising record after fund raising record under him. He's been Gordon Gee for athletics, but he has raised money hand over fist.
