So Phil wants somebody who can run the department like a business, huh?

if the plan is to hire a replacement for Mike to 'run it like a business,' then I think we missed the boat ... again! If, on the other hand, the plan is for the entire athletic enterprise to have the organization, tools, resources and support to compete on the highest level — then we should all stand Shoulder to Shoulder to do our part.

Exactly

Benson has been remarkably quiet during this whole process, hasn't he? This was Phil's move, he said so himself.
Yeah it's been weird but from everything I've heard recently Benson does not want his legacy to fall under being the president during the worst run in football history, maybe he's going about it behind the scenes and not sticking his foot in his mouth?

I hate Phil.... hate hate hate him. He has been awful. We need some fresh blood in that position.

You mean compensation totally unrelated to performance? I think we already have that.

Ha! Academic administrators are like coachs: the good ones have been around different institutions for both experience AND because they were sought after for their talents. To spend your whole career in one location moving up the ladder for the same employer, is an indication only that you are talentless, except as a politician who knows where the skeltons are buried or have compromising photos of the right people!

Then, on top of everything else, he's a professor of Education, lowest of the low!

So, if I'm hearing you right bc90, you'd prefer a recently "retired" IRS official as our new AD? Well, that's one option, I suppose - they sure as hell know how to raise money!

Hopefully Phil will get another DUI and not keep his job as a leader of young adults this time.

Great point in the OP. How Dr. Phil, with his lips wrapped around the public teat, will know what a businessman looks like is one the more ridiculous things I have heard in a while.

Are AD's really "business" guys? I kind of think of them as public faces of the AD dept and fund raisers that usually have sports participation backgrounds.

Is Pat Haden a business man? Skip Bertman (LSU)? CM Newton (Kentucky)? I could go on but it seems like an odd word choice. Not sure what they are searching for.

I think you hire someone who's worked in college sports to replace Bohn. Not sure why we are trying to make this some kind of difficult mission here.

The role of the AD is changing, neither Skip Bertman or CM Newton are employed by those schools anymore. Pat Haden wasn't exactly a conventional choice. I'm saying you'll always hire a business guy, but the current model is getting away from coaches, which used to be the norm whether current ones to be it in name only or for former ones to advance up the ladder. Obviously, there's still some like Barry Alvarez, but those are becoming fewer and fewer.

Oops sorry. Didn't know those guys were gone from their jobs.

Alvarez is a good one.

As I think longer about it, the Michigan AD was the Dominoes CEO for a few years although I'm pretty sure he played football at Michigan.

Similar to the new Bama AD, being a former coach/player but also having a business background. Basically, all things being equal, you'll take someone who has an athletics on their resume, but I think Brandon was hired more for his business experience than because he was a former football player. The bigger the budget, the more you want a "CEO" AD. I don't think a community college needs to use this model.

Yeah. It's kind of like in professional sports. They used to use the GM position as a place old managers/coaches could go when they wanted to go gracefully into the sunset. Then, after years of seeing professional sports agents kick their asses in contract negotiations and the salary cap being hopelessly mismanaged, team owners realized that it had become a position for someone who understood finance in addition to understanding the sport. With the growth of advanced analytics for player evaluations, knowledge of the sport became increasingly less important too. Similarly, college AD has become much more about fundraising, marketing, PR, budgeting, ticket sales (which should be outsourced to a professional broker, btw), merchandising and corporate sponsorship relationships than it is about knowing a damn thing about the sports you manage. You hire a search firm to find coaches and then interview the best candidates rather than hiring from your coaching tree these days. It's a business job. There are a number of AB members who would make a better AD than most of the familiar names from CU athletics who have been mentioned for the position.

So, having said all that, do you have any faith that Phil knows what somebody with those qualifications looks like?

I know Phil is the "punching bag" here. But he did say, he wanted someone who would run it like a business. I'm interested to see where this goes. I'm sure they'll use a search firm and I think there's many factions involved in this decision.

when he picks ceal barry to run the department, we're all going to feel like the punching bag.

I'm not sure I dislike hiring Ceal, but if they did it would go everything against what he said. She's more of an administrator than a CEO. So I'll be first in line calling out Phil for the "business" comment.

If that happens, that might be it for me. As a fan and alum, I have watched a decade of ineptitude as far as the AD is concerned. There have been bright spots, Tad, the BB resurgence, the practice facility, but it has been a monumental cluster otherwise. I'll still be a fan, but it is hard to get amped up about your FB team when you have no confidence in the leadership. MikMac may be the man, but it will take a special guy to succeed in spite of Dr. Phil and BB.

I have a lot of respect for Ceal.

I also say without reservation that she would be a horrendous choice for AD. She's not a businessperson, she's not a fundraiser, she's not someone who unites the donor factions. I'm not even sure I trust her to emphasize football. It's an awful idea that shouldn't be entertained beyond a token acknowledgement that she's a candidate in order to play the politics the right way.

I am going to consider this rhetorical.

That's my feeling on this. Many get all up-in-arms when they hear she's a candidate, but Phil almost had to say that in my opinion.

DiStephano's definition of a business person: Someone who can balance the books, talk with the donors, and defer to the Chancellor's office and political whims on all substantial decisions while taking full responsibility for the bad and passing any good up the chain.
