2-10 Kentucky with Rivals #1 rated recruiting class, why can't we do better?

A bit misleading because of quantity but Stoops has landed eight 4-star players in a year and a half and a bunch of upper-tier 3-star players and he already has 18 commits for this current class. This is strange considering that according to most people on here first year staffs, particularly those who inherit bad teams, cannot be expected to put together such quality recruiting classes. I'll concede that Kentucky is a slightly better situation then ours but still, it's hardly an ideal one either. UK's facilities are even older then ours and the amount of instate talent is the same as CO so if your thinking either of those things, stop.

I'm confident in saying that if Mac and company were at UK they wouldn't currently be having nearly as much success. It's particularly disappointing that none of the blue chip instate prospects are/did even consider us, let alone commit, since Mac got the job. Point of all this is, obviously I'm not happy with the new coaching staff but more specifically I don't want excuses-as Stoops and other coaches have demonstrated they don't always hold much water, I want results and what we got in '13 and how '14 is currently going is not nearly good enough. Go ahead and bash my negativity or "trolling," but you same people will be the ones complaining if (when?) we continue to finish with losing records in the coming years.

Thanks for the fresh topic.
+1 we already had this debate and most people realized that it is comparing apples and oranges for a whole bunch of reasons but also most people feel that despite the state of our program, etc., HCMM has to turn the corner and start playing above our weight.

But I also struggle to see why people are so unhappy about our progress on the recruiting front. We are getting some good commits, all of whom have BCS offers-that did not happen under Embree on a consistent basis.

I am in the camp of supporting a coach until he proves he doesn't deserve it. Let's let HCMM prove it through his first full recruiting class (we are only 4 kids in so far) and let's see what kind of product he puts on the field this year.

You really need someone to explain to you why a team that has gone 17-44 the last five years can't have the #1 ranked class according to Rivals?

It's a solid start to recruiting. Nothing to get too up or too down about. Let's see how the next eight months shake out. If we finish in the 60s, the staff will need to do better in a hurry. The in-state progress needs to be accelerated regardless.

we already talked about this, as soon as i find the thread i am merging this into it.

Slightly? All five current 4 star commits came from within a 6 hour drive. And that's just portion of the 4 stars available in that area.

My title says why can't we do better, not why can't we be #1. And with regards to your comment on our deficiencies, again UK was 2-10 last year and mediocre in the years before that, and their facilities and instate talent pool are on par and maybe even slightly worse then ours.

Their in-state area really encompasses Ohio for all intents and purposes, so it is a bit different. They can also sell the SEC (yes, it matters).

Should be interesting to see how recruiting shakes out for 2014. No reason to be elated or panic yet.

How many of the 4-star players within a 6 hour drive, or for that matter a 2 hour drive from CU have we gotten in recent years? The answer is none.

Agreed. Overall, the staff is off to a solid start, and it doesn't look like we'll be filling 3/4 of the class with guys who didn't get another BCS offer, but the in-state recruiting is a big concern. When we can't make the top 5 of most of the top in-state prospects, something's really wrong. White, Holland and Risner, if we could somehow climb into the running again, would go a long way for the staff and their in-state reputation.

I would only be mildly concerned if we were in contention for elite in-state recruits, but it is a lot worse than that right now. Something needs to change there pretty quickly.

It's a numbers game though, you're talking about 1-4 kids a year of that rating in CO. Not saying CU can't get those recruits, but while CU's going maybe 0 for 4 right now, Stoops just went 5/35 of 4 star recruits(estimating, probably a bit more there within 6 hours).

You do see how your title is misleading, right? Along with your history...

Go read the thread and compare the records and how they lost. UK has had a lot more success than CU and the Stoops name is a big one in Ohio.

Kentucky shows how much geography matters. All of us have tried to downplay the importance of in-state recruiting in some way or another over the last several years, but it is vital going forward. Not talking 2018 either, needs to be soon.

I agree that CU needs to do better. I want to see us finish with a Top 40 class this year. We need to be there if we want to have an opportunity to compete at this level. There aren't too many examples of programs like Wisconsin that recruited in the 40s and 50s but consistently delivered Top 25 seasons.

I think we all agree we need to do better, the purpose of this thread was to highlight that as Kentucky and others have proven, we realistically can do better. I'm sick of the excuses, we certainly have obstacles but they are not as insurmountable as some seem to believe. Plenty of programs that are equal or even worse overall situations then ours have nonetheless managed to out recruit us over the past several years.

And which BCS programs have been worse than 17-44 over the last five years? I'll give you a hint, Kentucky isn't on the list.

There is more to a program's "situation" then just their recent record. Location, campus, facilities, academics, coaching staff, history, etc...

The record's bad, we all get that, but if that's continually used as an excuse, we'll never climb out of this hole. The only way that record improves substantially is if we improve the quality of talent we're recruiting. I don't think landing several 4*'s this year is realistic either, but the staff can (and should) be able to recruit above what the record alone would indicate.

The biggest problem I see right now is that we've been saddled with a coach who was a small-minded, unspectacular, uninspired hire and he in turn hired a staff that makes similar adjectives come to mind. And if you don't think recruits feel this same way either consciously or subconsciously you're kidding yourself. The resume's and clout of coaches such as Tressel, Petrino, and Bellotti for example mean a whole hell of a lot more to recruits then Mike Mac's charm. What this program lacks is name recognition and credibility and the Mac hire and his subsequent hires did very little to help these problems.

I'm not trying to use it as an excuse, but it's being used against us on the recruiting trail. Kentucky has had some recent success and they hired a big be recruiter to go along with the chance to play in the SEC, that explains a big portion of their recruiting success. It's also Kentucky so I wouldn't be surprised if there is a lot of cheating going on.

I expect this class to be in-line with the 2012 class by the way.

I think the record hurts us more than it normally would because of our recent switch to the Pac-12. We have not exactly made a great first impression. But like with anything, it's a "reason" not an "excuse".

"Saddled" with MacIntyre?

You will get agreement on recruiting, but give me a break on the stuff about MacIntyre being small-minded (hint: CU ain't his last stop)

Also love tressel and petrino suggestions, shows how out of touch with CU JRK is.

Huh, Tom Osbourne seems to think that MacIntyre is the next superstar in coaching but what the hell does he know about coaching college football?
