July: AAU season kicks into high gear

Love it or hate it, July is the biggest month of the recruiting year for hoops other than the signing days.

This is when coaches hit the camps, make connections, see how guys match up against top competition, and discover talent.

It's AAU prime time.

There are three 5-day evaluation periods coming up: July 10-14, July 17-21 and July 24-28.

This will pretty much set CU's final board for the November signing period and re-align the board for the 2015 class.

So what do we expect. New offers going out? Recruiting updates from the major sites? When do recruits come onsite? Sept and October?

Yes and yes. There should be a ton of updates with all of the top players, as well as some new names who emerge. As Nik said, we'll also see the staff finalize their board, possibly extend a couple more offers, and start working on getting kids to set up OV's. I'd keep an eye on Thomas Welsh, but I'm sure someone will come out of nowhere too.

Great read from Will.

Seriously, if you're a Rivals subscriber (and you should be), there's some awesome info on the July period for CU and what's going on. Loved reading the stuff on Conway, surprised by the stuff on Adams, and intrigued by Welsh.

Will brought the goods.

Tad's hanging on tightly to that last scholarship.

I would suggest that he will not accept another '14 commitment until after The Mayor has declared for the draft
I highly doubt he'll wait for that to happen. He signed 3 guys in the fall signing period last year when we only had one senior on the roster.

If you check you will find that he had three openings guaranteed with the departure of two red shirt juniors who were in their forth year of school and on target to graduate. He had fulfilled an unofficial, but implied commitment to them to be on scholarship so that they could graduate in due course if they applied themselves during a four year period. No such condition exists today. "The Mayor" looks like a first round draft choice next year, but you never know. A lot of things could happen, including an injury. He is an academic Junior. Boyle is a man of his word. Don't be surprised if he waits to be sure that he can fulfill a commitment to a recruit before he makes it. He will never force anyone off of scholarship just to make room for a hot prospect. Time will tell.

But when did Adams and Tunks make those decisions? Or did Tad tell them before the season that they wouldn't be brought back for the 5th year? I'm asking because I remember when we took Thomas' commitment, a lot of people figured we were done for the year looking at the roster. Then we took Fletcher and we figured Tad must know something we don't because we definitely weren't counting on having 3 open scholarships.

We figured right.

My guess right now is that Tad will sign a 2nd guy for this class in November.

There are some elite prospects available every spring, but there's usually a huge gap between them and the other guys who are available - especially if you're trying to find a big. But you never know. Next year could be the year that Tad signs Collier and then looks to add a veteran transfer if an additional spot opens up in the spring.

I respect your opinion about this stuff, but beg to differ ... If Tad signs more the Collier this November I will buy you a beer (or send you the money) :)

It's a bet. I'll be back for some hoops games, so let's call it a pitcher of choice at DH pre-game?
