Why can't Cal sell tickets?

Because Cal's wine and cheese fan base + irrelevance doesn't mix. Keep in mind they did major downsizing of the seating capacity.

College football is basically ignored in the bay area.

I have never understood this. While it's absolutely true, it doesn't make sense to me. The area is teeming with Cal and Stanford grads. Did these people never go to games when they went to those schools? What gives? My affinity for Stanford has been documented. I make no apologies for the fact that I think that place is incredibly cool. If I lived on the peninsula, I'd be a season ticket holder. The tailgating there is fantastic. Tickets are cheap. The stadium is beautiful. Oh, and they have a kick ass football team, too.

The ambivalence towards college football in the Bay Area has always baffled me.

Every Stanford grad I know didn't care about football when they were in school and don't care now. They were too busy being smarter than everyone and trying to lose their virginity before graduation.

They can't afford to.

What is strange are Cal fans are some of the best fans in the league. They just need something to motivate and excite them again.

Much like the Denver media gives the Broncos and other pro sports a reach around the Bay Area media does so for the Giants Niners and Warriors. The A's and Raiders get some run but not as much. Add in the fact that many Bay Area residents are transplants that have no ties to Cal or Stanford and you get college sports apathy. The radio gives colleges a little run but yesterday they did a pac12 preview on KNBR680, the biggest sports station and Niners and Giants flagship. It consisted of Cal Stanford Oregon and USC previews and that's it. Tom Tolbert, noted UA honk who I usually like, even went on to state that he was too disinterested in other teams to preview. 2 segments then back to Niner hype and Giants coverage of the worst WS title defense in history, not counting the Florida Marlins. Pathetic. They did mention CU though and that teams who didn't get the Buffs on their schedule did not catch a break and mention of GBs rant on Katie Hnida.

Help me HCMM, you're my only hope!!

What makes you say that? I had season tix a year they were ranked in the top ten and the stadium seemed dead.

I lived in LA and I can honestly say that most of the die hard USC fans were not USC grads. In fact, many hadn't finished 12th grade. But they had their team. This was during the time that LA had two pro teams as well. Talk radio wasn't NFL-all-the-time.... This market is so messed up with Orange.

Discounting tickets to $19 for the Northwestern game. Are you ****ing kidding me? That's a potential 10-win team coming in.

We're supposed to get excited over these wankers and their 500 fans or so who show up acting like they own Ohio State and Michigan?

Ohio State and SC will be the only sold out games this year. The prior staff traumatized the fan base. Still, this game will come close to being a sell out by tomorrow.

Good luck against the sheep.

I don't think you are going to get much sympathy for traumatized fan bases on this board. The folks here are the hardened core of CU fans, if we survived the last 8 years we can survive anything short of the death penalty.

You should be getting excited about college football! Especially with a ranked BCS opponent coming in.

On another note, that's a unique schedule Cal has hosting 2 Big 10 teams.

To be honest, Cal has a hard time selling Labor Day games because everyone wants to get the hell out of the urban jungle for the holiday weekend. Coming off a 3-9 season, bay bridge closed, late night game, nice TV at home. All of it adds up. Plus, for the games Cal was getting 70k+, the opponents (Usually furd, UCLA, USC and Oregon) the opponents were bringing 10k+ fans. I don't think NW came even close to selling out the visitor section, and we didn't give them that many tickets to begin with.

All I can do is say I'm going and have 3 friends in tow. Sure hope the place is rocking. If Cal can manage to win, I think fans will jump on board pretty quickly, but Cal alum are notorious for their pessimism and wait and see attitude (since we've been waiting... since 1959).

I am afraid the Buckeyes will travel well and bring a sea of red.

It's the visiting team's fault - they should be selling more tickets to our stadium. We're doing our part.

Berkley is not a college town, it's a hippie/geek town. Those two demographics don't pay attention to football.
