Dal Ward Damage

As George alluded to in his address to the regents we took a pretty heavy hit to both Dal Ward and Balch, the latter of course houses track Head Coach Mark Wetmore's office, currently it is completely unusable and several facilities in Dal Ward were damaged. I was kicking around the idea of a fundraiser through us, Rivals, Ralphie Report and others to help repair the damage.

Am i crazy or is this something we as a community would be game for?

Yes - but maybe insurance will pay for some new facilities?? :smile2:

What organization would be the best to send some money to? I have been really busy and have not been able to pay as much attention as I would like, but I want to help in some way.

I would be pleasantly surprised if CU had federal flood insurance. According to FEMA, in Colorado, only 22,000 homes and businesses had flood insurance. It's not included with your regular policy.

True, but they are right next to the creek

It would be kind of embarrassing if CU didn't have flood insurance. I decided to do some quick research on these types of events and what is recommended, and the main advocate on preparedness in the nation seems to be the Natural Hazards Center... at the University of Colorado.

They even publish the Natural Hazards Observer journal on this topic.

That's hopeful. But regardless, additional money is always useful, so keep planning that direction.

at Dal Ward it would be wind driven rain in all likelyhood.

Wind driven rain is covered under most insurance policies, unlike "The river got to high and went over our house".(Flood) Hopefully it was leaks, and not not water running down the street and into Dal Ward!

Much of the litigation in the south since the last huricanne has been on this point. The argument is "Sure the tide came in and put my house under 12 feet of water, but the rain and wind knocked my house over before the tidal surge hit my home."

I am also thinking this ^ is what is going to happen. Maybe we had some really expensive national championship rings wash away? maybe our Heisman trophy was water damaged?

If anything was damaged it is likely storage in the basement but either way, IN.

To say nothing of those Picassos that were hanging in Wetmore's office.

I imagine that married student housing was ensured but given that we'd need a 100 foot wall of water to damage Dal Ward that may not have been covered.

Insurance Agent: Any valuables in the house?
Homer: Well, the Picasso, my collection of classic cars--
Insurance Guy: Sorry, this policy only covers actual losses, not made-up stuff.
Homer: Well that's just great!

[Sorry, couldn't find a clip]

How did DW suffer flood damage, 50' above the creek?

It suffered significant water damage from all of the rain, no actual flood damage. Basement flooded from drainage, academic center's roof leaked as did Balch.

Norlin also flooded and Dal Ward is below that. According to CU's twitter 25% of the buildings on campus were damaged in someway by the water (rain or flooding).

I imagine the press room in the Dal Ward is pretty damaged.
