Does the Oregon State game determine the outlook of the season?

I think so.

If we win, we can have legitimate bowl game conversations. Not that it would be a lock, but at least a possibility.

If we lose, we probably hold true to preseason predictions and win 3-4 games.

Agree or disagree?

Agree. This is a huge game, no way around it. A win, and suddenly we're looking at 4 wins (if they give us an Oct. 19 game) for when Arizona visits in late October.

I hate to put too much on a single game.

But, yeah. Winning would give us a path to a bowl game that probably included enough games we'd be favored in to where we'd get there on the chalk. Losing would make it much more of an uphill battle.

This game and if we play Ha-vay-eee. We would be 1 game (potentially) away from a bowl game.

I'm not sure I wanna even think about bowl eligibility. Not yet, anyway. Before the season, I hoped to see improvement in planning, coaching, schemes, and players playing hard for a full game. I think we've seen a change, and it looks light years different from the prev regimes. I dunno Duff, maybe the beav's are the measuring stick, but I can't stop thinking that the game against AZ is gonna tell us if the team can win more than 3-4 games this year. If we can beat the 'cats then I think we upset $c, and the game against the yoots becomes a toss-up.

Yeah. If we are to even think of six wins, this is a must win. But more than that, a win would really legitimize this staff. It would also infuse the team with confidence which could help make the differencenlatermin the season. There are some winnable games out there.

This is a big, big test. We haven't played well on the road, so I am curious how we come out. This is a game we can win, and if we do, then we start looking at Cal and Hawaii (hopefully) and one more to get us into a bowl game.

Good news - OSU doesn't really do the "D" thing, their running game isn't all world, and Mannion's mobility kinda sucks

I agree. If their QB comes out and torches us and our offense sputters for 10-17 points then outlook says 3 wins. If we somehow pull it off, maybe a chance at a bowl. What sucks is the two week layoff. Penalties could mount. We have to find a way to pressure the qb in this game or he will pick us apart.

For some reason I thought we were 3-0 so we'd need 3 more wins to get to a bowl.

Ha-vay-ee is spelled like that because that's how that stupid espn guy says it during a broadcast.

I certainly think a win at OSU puts is in reasonable position to get to a bowl this year-not that any of us really expected that as a real possibility when the season started. Because of the low expectations coming into this season for obvious reasons, I would say the season could still be a great season without winning at OSU and without going to a bowl game.

If we win 3-4 games and are competitive in most of the games we lose, show improvement in schemes and in-game adjustments (already on our way there), than I think it is a successful season. So it depends on how you define outlook of the season. If you mean our likelihood of going bowling, than definitely yes. But if you mean our overall attitude about progress than it is not that important.

This game will show how we do on the road against a team with similar, or likely slightly better, talent. Win this one and it's a huge success.

This game is huge. Win, and we know we can win on the road, against a well coached team. Win this game, and I like our chances against ASU, UA, Cal, Utah and USC (assuming Kiffin hasn't been s.hitcanned by then). Lose it, and I think we will struggle to get to four wins.

Holy **** you guys have been baptized in cold Kool Aid.

When the season started I said I wasn't worried about wins and losses, but instead wanted to see a team that looked like a real football team, showed discipline and drive and learned from its mistakes. Does anybody remember the last two years? I'm pleased by what I've seen so far, but don't see a win in Corvallis and an ensuing victory against ASU somehow linked.

I wouldn't necessarily link them. I do think our chances are better against ASU if we can beat OSU. The reason I say that is because if we beat OSU, we are probably better than we thought we would be at the beginning of the year.

Nothing like jumping way ahead.

OSU is looking a lot like a normal OSU team meaning more of a team finishing near the bottom of the conference than a team pushing for top 25 recognition. The OSU team I saw yesterday strugging to beat a bad SDSU team is certainly beatable.

Beating them though certainly doesn't mean we should be booking any bowl trips. It will make us feel good and certainly leave those who predicted 2 wins in the dust. Add a Hawaii game and a bowl would be a waaay outside posibility but as much as we have improved things are going to get tougher for us quickly.

Oregon will burst any bubbles we have going in undefeated. ASU has some issues but they also have way more speed and talent than any team we have beaten for a long time. Zona' is more realistic but they have some talent as well. UCLA and Washington have already shown that they are quality teams, don't have high expectations there. Cal is also more talented than us but is also a team known to go in the tank, question is are we in shell shock by that time. I'd love to upset USC and Kiffen certainly will give us our best chance but even if he is still there they will be a team with guys playing for some pride or for draft position. In terms of raw talent they have guys on the scout team who would start for us. Finish on the road against a beatable but much improved Utah team.

For us to go bowling would mean adding and beating Hawaii and including them in a 4-6 finish. As big a Kool-aid drinker as I am it would take everything falling perfectly in place for this to happen.

At this point I am just happy to have a squad going on the field that looks and acts like a major college football team. A team that I don't have to avoid getting into conversations about with fans of other teams.

Beating OSU though would be huge as a momentum builder for the program. It's a lot easier to get recruits to listen to you when you can point to some wins and wins in conference. A Buffs win could help to get some of the fans back to thinking about going out to see games again instead of doing yardwork. The tone of practice and team activities is always better and more productive coming off wins. Going to 3-0 will go a long ways toward washing away the emotional baggage of the last coaching regime.

This game could be huge for the program but I wouldn't project it past what it means right now.

A win at OSU gives the team the confidence needed to make a run at a bowl game. However, we are still in a position where we would have to win every game we have a puncher's chance in to get there - not a great set up and not something I want to spend much time thinking about just to get my hopes dashed (at least not yet...).

We haven't played anybody yet. And in those games, only a couple big defensive plays kept them from being nailbiters. So OSU is our first real test. A win would be fantastic, but being competitive would prove a lot about how much we've improved. With as young as we are, competitive this year = wins next year. Hopefully.

Good lord, I'm glad we were able to smother that fire.

It's a rebuilding process. When we've been down as far as we've been, you can't view this this season as any sort of destination. The OSU game is just another game, but I don't view it as having larger implications one way or the other.

I never mentioned anything about expectations in my post. I never even indicated we would win next week (I don't actually think we will). I merely was talking about a win changing the overall outlook on the season. It's okay for your outlook to evolve if circumstances warrant it.

Yes. Assuming we play and win vs Hawaii then we just have to find 2 wins out of 8 games

False. You are obligated to support your preseason expectations.

No. It's no more of a predictor than beating CSU. OSU sucks. They looked horrible last night. Duff is pushing koolaid. Beware!

if everything breaks nearly perfectly, I can squint my eyes through my black and gold sunglasses and see 6 wins somewhere out on the horizon. it seems more than a little improbable to me, but I agree that we go from "a snowball's chance in hell" to "so you're saying there's a chance" with a win over osu.

First road game and first true test for the defense will tell us something.

The thing it is hard not to let your mind go there if we start out 3-0 knowing we have another "easy" game on the schedule we didn't have before. If we are able to swap out Fresno State for Hawaii, then getting to 4 requires zero imagination if we beat OSU. So then you just have to find 2 wins out 8 games that include teams like CAL, AZ, Utah and a struggling USC.

But as I said earlier in this thread, noone before this season really thought the b word had any business being in the conversation for 2013. And if we don't get there, but still continue to show improvement and look like a competent team, that is real progress for 2013 to build from for recruiting and building a winning culture.

I didn't think so before the season started. Last year's OSU was a team I didn't think we had a shot at beating on the road. This years OSU team looks like we can certainly compete. So hard ot tell with the teams we have played so far, as I think we are much better, but it is hard to tel HOW much better. With hawaii playing us (I am just going to say that they want the money bad enough..and if we need to pay another 100g to get them here, and it gives us a shot at a bowl game..DO IT) and that making us 3 wins....then OSU means if we pull that off we have 4 wins, with AU, Cal, USC (hopefully with Kiffin still in charge) and Utah.....I think we can pull off two wins out of those four. ASU it is hard to tell how good they are, and of course I don't see any hope with UCLA, Washington and Oregon at this point.

But...good lord. What a change from weekly beatdowns last year to even having a glimmer of hope for a bowl game.....
