After This Weekend...

The Buffs bowl hopes may but may not come down to the Utah game. After what I saw this weekend nothing that convinced me that we couldn't have 5 Ws going into that game. OSU = live by the pass die by the pass ie 13 yds rushing, Cal = can't stop water, ASU just looks fast because of their dark unis, UofA = all RB no QB, USC = all defense no offense...Lee should've jumped ship his draft stock is tanking.

ASU is the one game where out players will look really tall. I don't know if we can win that one, but I choose to measure the Buffs against other teams by height.

While I agree the bottom of the PAC doesn't look great, the only thing we've proven so far is that we're a better team than last year, on offense anyway. We didn't get the FSU measuring stick, so we have to wait for OSU to tell us where we're at.

Things that need to show steady improvement the next 9/10 games:

1. Protect Connor against a Pac-12 defense. If this happens consistently our receivers will take care of their business.

2. Get to the other team's QB. One of ASU's flaws I have seen in the last decade is they are notoriously sieve-like in allowing their quarterback to be sacked. Our pass rush thus far has been disappointing but we'll also need someone other than CUD to emerge as a threat.

3. Get some push in the running game and move the pile. Our speed RBs seem to make better plays in space but can't net much from taking the ball from scrimmage. Introduce Adkins and see if he brings any different traits to that aspect of the game. Establishing this could work wonders for opening up our passing game even more.

4. Cover some kicks!

Coach those areas up and we're looking at a 13th game this winter. Oregon and Washington may still put on a clinic offensively as expected but we'll remain competitive with the majority of the schedule, even win a few when we're not favored to.

The defense is absolutely improved over last year

Not feeling ASU on the road. Somehow ASU beating Wisconsin (or at least being very close, if you're pissed about it) and losing at Stanford doesn't have me feeling any differently than I was about that one.

Yeah, I'm not seeing the confidence with ASU. They are going to attack the edges and succeed.

Handler's going to have a bitch of a matchup in that one, too.

Our shot in that one would be turnovers and if our DTs have a big night.

I suppose that's true, although I couldn't be as emphatic as you. They've given up 51 points to two poor teams which isn't too promising IMHO.

Special teams. How many pick 6's did we have the last two years?

Defense is night and day better. Special teams is responsible for 21 of the 51 points we have given up. Plus the we have scored 3 defensive Tds. The biggest difference is how much more organized our secondary is. Better speed too

They also gave up an average of about 315 yards, plenty to account for those points.

In case you havent noticed, in college football, 315 yards a game is upper echelon defense. Thats a number 3/4 of the country strive for, so thats not much to be giving up.

Our progress is encouraging! I do predict improvement on special teams as they have spent more time together. And we do have talented kickers which is huge.

I am having a tough time looking past OSU though. The road is just daunting after these past few years. What a huge step forward a win would be if they can find a way!

I think all our remaining games will be tough (except hopefully the FSU replacement game). It is going to be a challenge to win anymore games. I think we will win at least 2 more, hopefully 4; but even if we don't win again this season it is so much more fun to watch a well coached team. Also, they coach to win as opposed to trying to establish a smash-mouth running game without the talent at OL to line up toe to toe and play smash-mouth.

There is a small chance we can upset ASU, but ASU is much better than us talent wise. I have a feeling ASU will lose at least one game they are supposed to win every year during Graham's tenure. Maybe we're that game this year.

ASU could be on a 3-game losing streak when we play them. At the least, they're going to be a little worn down after 4-straight against Wisconsin, Stanford, USC and Notre Dame.

I agree that we are vastly improved this year. I also think that we come down to earth a bit against a decent OSU team on the road. Not a big deal, but I think it will be tough to win in Corvalis.

Nowwaitaminute... I love the Buffs as much as the next guy, but unless I missed something, this is a team that needed a 4th quarter rally to put away an FCS team at home. It's a little early to be talking about getting 4 other wins in Pac 12 play.

I say we get, and win a Hawaii game meaning 3 needed wins in Pac 12 play, which isn't completely whacky to see happening.
