Where do we go from here on offense?

Not just talking about the rest of this season, but next season as well. We clearly have a big play threat in PRich.

But what else? Decent RBs in Powell and Adkins. Decent WRs in Spruce and Goodson. Anything else?

How do we improve in the red zone and on third down going forward? We have scored one :)wow:) TD in nine red zone opportunities this season. We are 2 of 30 on third down the last two weeks. Are there players currently redshirting that could potentially help right away next season?

Too bad we can't go out and find a JUCO TE that can provide a threat over the middle, or have Hobbs back.

Everything seems perimeter to me, we need a threat between the hashes for sure. A big time back and a few nasty linemen wouldn't hurt.

As I have been saying for going on 8 years now...we need better quarterback play. Until that happens we have issues. I am not talking about a superstar but someone who can at least be an average performer and make some 3rd down conversions.

It goes beyond the quarterback IMO. The offense seems disjointed right now. Does anyone honestly believe Christian Powell with 20 carries is a recipe for success? Beyond the TE issues, do we have a physical WR that can force the issue on third down or in the red zone? Nope.

But I do agree QB play is still an issue.

As for the offense, we have no one between the hashes. We don't really have a problem chucking it down the field to P-Rich, but we don't ever utilize the middle of the field. We have no tight end play, we can't productively run a simple slant to pick up 3-6 yards. Its almost like, as far as the passing game is concerned, it's either a 15-40 yard toss down the sideline, or some type of screen.

Add to the playbook some short throws:
Screen pass
Shovel pass
TE in the seam
Slants

Here's my hope: I hope that what we're seeing is the result of a measured roll out of the offense that MM wants to run. Again, I *hope* that we're not seeing the entirety of his playbook. Once he's had a chance to incorporate the entire scheme, there's a good chance we'll be seeing some things that will be more effective in the red zone. He strikes me as the kind of guy who works at putting the players he has in the right position to make plays. After that, it's up to them to make the plays. So far, it's been very hit and miss, but the hits are encouraging.

TE like kasa would help and having another wr who can get open other than p-rich. Thought goodson would be that guy.QB play obviously needs to improve, qb with the ability to do damage and be a threat running a must in this offense.

Is a running QB really a "must" for this offense? I agree that it would add another dimension to the offense, but I think this same offense at SJSU showed that if your QB is accurate with his passes and does not turn the ball over, the offense can be pretty successful.

Nope we need a big time back. A Boldin type would help in the red zone, TE WR, doesn't matter. I'd settle for an oline than can get push. Thank God we aren't playing Oregon every damn week, they are so much better at every position, it's a wonder it wasn't worse. Lot of work ahead but we have the right guy to make it work.

Listening to the game yesterday, it sounded like they attempted quite a few screen passes, but Wood wasn't able to hit them.

And TE in the seam would be great, if we had TEs.....

Either Wood will have to improve or we will have to find a QB who can actually run the zone read. Does anybody on defense buy the idea that Wood is making a read and deciding whether or not to pull the ball?

It all starts upfront. We need a nastier and more physically developed o-line.

It is systemic. We are actually much improved from lat year but without a mature ol, more speed at rb, and a te who can make teams pay, our upside is very limited. A difference maker at qb would be a godsend. It could cover a lot of flaws. Maybe sefo will be the guy We say that every year about the backup qb however.

If you look at the QB, he is a guy who throws a pretty nice deep ball, but who has a tendency to get overhyped in big situations and lose touch/air mail the ball. We saw it yesterday when P-Rich was wide open in the end zone and Wood threw it way over his head. What should have been a red zone TD turned into a turnover on downs. It seems to be a regular problem on screen passes. Looking at the problems we have on offense, they are a very close match for Wood's weaknesses as a QB at this point.

He is actually much improved over what we saw from him last year, and I definitely think he's our best option right now. But he's a work in progress, and until he improves the offense is going to struggle...

Wood has happy feet, there is no way around that. He feels pressure when its not there, sometimes even scrambling into pressure. He has a tendency to air mail open receivers, holds the ball too long at times, and his decision making just isn't where it should be. It is obvious that MacIntyre will do everything in his power to hold onto Sefo's redshirt, at least to this point. I don't see it being pulled but if it is you can't pull it without a week of preparation at minimum, again I don't think it gets pulled at all this year. Having said the Charleston Southern game would be a nice break in game if the ASU game goes like the last two in terms of QB play.

I think MM realizes this is essentially the first coaching Wood's received, and is expecting him to improve each week. Didn't happen this week but it was against a tough foe.

I'll be dissapointed if they don't keep the RS on Sefo. Tyler Hansen comes to mind.

Skill position has enough players to win some games. Saying that, the OL needs to block more consistent and push the other team around. The DL needs to get off the ball and up field better / faster. Could you imagine how good Gillam would look if the DL played their positions better?

I think Wood has had plenty of coaching. I believe that would be an issue if his technique was bad but it is not. Wood's issue is he gets flustered and then makes mistakes. The reason he is in there is because the alternatives are no better. I think MacIntyre is waiting for Jordan Webb to come back and maybe give Webb a shot.
