Jordan Webb Could Take Over Backup Quarterback Role

By Jon Woods

With the degradation in current starting quarterback Connor Wood's play over the last two games some fans have started to get antsy about the state of the position. True freshmen Sefo Liufau has been listed as the backup quarterback for the four games so far but has yet to see the playing field and still has his redshirt intact. A contingent of Buffs supporters would love to see Liufau get...

I can't see the staff bailing on Connor. But if he doesn't show improvement against quality opponents, we may be stuck seeing Webb again. Ugh!

Multiple places are rumormongering that the staff really wants to redshirt both Sefo and Gehrke. Also that we shouldn't sleep on Gehrke as a legit starting candidate down the road.

I hope they are able to redshirt Sefo. Would really like to see the coaches start to add some redshirts to the program.

He's got to beat out Sefo for that down the road starter role, and it sure sounded like the coaches were pretty high on Sefo early in the season. I guess Gehrke must have progressed very well thus far?

I'm hoping they both have.

I'm not ready to throw Wood under the bus just yet. Nobody has looked particularly good against Oregon. Granted, he didn't look good against OSU, but Let's see how he does over the next 3-4 weeks before deciding he's dog meat.

I'm not throwing in the towel on him either...just wondering what could explain the difference is between the first 2 and last 2 games.

Hopefully we can successfully get through the rest of the year with Webb backing up Wood so that Gehrke and Sefo can redshirt.

I hope they can red shirt both Gehrke and Sefo, but the thought of Webb playing makes me cringe.

Wood has had two bad games in a row but I don't see any reason for hitting the panic button.

This is his first year with significant playing time. Oregon State was a terrible game but OSU is also a better team than we gave them credit for and it was probably the first game that Wood had ever played in that combination of cold and wet. It also would have helped him if he hadn't been spending his day avoiding pressure.

The Oregon game was also bad although he started out fairly well. If Goodsen had held on to the ball or if Richardson had not stutter stepped and run through the deep pass that went off his hands his statistics would have been much better. That said again he was under a lot of pressure and the speed of Oregons defense can cause problems for a lot of teams.

Wood is still a developing player who is in his first real year as a college QB with playing time and decent coaching. Lets see how he develops over the next few weeks.

I have no great desire to see Jordan Webb. I don't think it is an accident that he has lost huge numbers of games at two separate schools but I also think it is worth making some major sacrifices to have the potential of Sefo as a fifth year senior.

More so it is the OL. They gave Wood time invthe first two games and much less time to throw in the second two. The CU OL didn't handle better DL lines. I hope they can make some gains in the weeks to come.

What in Heaven's name is our new OC thinking??? What has happened is he is sending a clear message on QB's 2-4 that he has no confidence in them whatsoever, and is giving up on the seniors, who have endured now four coaching changes. This shows the inexperience and youth of the new OC. Perhaps he is over his head at this level. Put one of the three QB's in. Stevie Joe, Gehrke, or Sefu and build on that. See what happens. It can't possibly get any worse. Now is the time to do that, or another lost year. The new OC with this decision will lose one, maybe two current QB's to transfer, I guarantee it, with this "vote of confidence". We had too many QB's leave the last six months. Most in college football. The new OC must be a part of those young men's decisions to do so.

Huh?

The message I'm hearing is that we're playing to win this year by playing vets and building for the future by not burning eligibility with spot duty.

Fwiw, Webb was better than Wood last year. All the hate for Webb is really better placed on EB. Not suggesting Webb is better than Wood, but he was in EB's tear you down system.

Agreed Mr. Moderator. My point is we need a whole new starter, not spot duty. There is plenty of season left and very winnable games, I'm sure you concur. Arizona and Cal come to mind. Perhaps USC. With what we have and this recent decision, this may not come to fruition. Both QB's have played in Pac 12 competition, and have demonstrated their efforts. Let's see what passing time proves if I possibly could be correct.

BB2 with another new handle but the same old hate for Wood because he got the job over his buddy.

If Dormann, Gehrke, or anyone else was notably better they would be playing. Fact is that for better or worse Wood is the most talented guy we have available at this moment and while he has had a rough couple of weeks anyone else we have would have likely had a rougher couple of weeks.

It's always simple to respond to a loss with a call the "yank the QB" but is also most often a stupid response. Wood hasn't played well but that can be said for lots of guys on the team.

Webb may have been our best option last year in a year where looking at the incompetence of the coaching staff we didn't have a good option. He did however make a lot of the same mistakes we are seeing out of Wood right now, panicced throws, bad fundamentals under pressure, locking in on a single reciever, holding the ball to long, feeling pressure that isn't there and moving into pressure.

The difference is two fold. Webb isn't going to be around next year, it does us no good to work on developing him as a QB and he isn't going to give us a better chance to win now. He also while having many of the same weaknesses doesn't have anything close to the raw talent Wood has. Wood has a much stronger and quicker arm, Wood has better mobility, is bigger and stronger.

I do like the idea of having Webb as a back-up simply because he is better than Dormann and will let us save a year of eligibility on Sefo and Gerke which I don't want to burn in a season that for all intents and purposes is already a lost year with transition.

Not understanding why Gehrke's redshirt is so valuable. All it does is insure the QB depth chart will be very unbalanced next fall.

4 out of 5 QBs with little to no game experience? That's bad roster management.

Agree with this as well (Duffs on a roll recently) in that Wood is the immediate future, Sefo is apparently the next guy up as the future QB and then we hope to recruit a QB in the next couple classes who would follow Sefo. This guy would be the primary back-up down the road so getting another year out of Gehrke doesn't get us much.

At the same time if Gehrke is looked at as a quality depth guy we know that Webb will be gone after this year. Gehrke having some snaps could make him a much better prepared back-up in time of need even if the snaps are in garbage time.

Yes, I am sure you know more than guys who do this for a living. IMO, Wood has looked much better than Webb. Watching Dorman in the spring game filled in the blanks on why he isn't even in the conversation as to PT. But yes, let's plug in a true frosh and a guy who was the star of Scottsdale CC. I am sure they will immediately fare better in the P12 than our starter...idot.

Also Pac10 the only thing this move is intended to do, is push Sefo back on the depth chart in order to preserve his redshirt. HCMM really didn't want him at the 2nd spot this year but had no other option. You could tell in his interviews at the beginning of the season that he was uncomfortable having his freshman, potential star QB, at the 2nd spot. Sefo needs the redshirt year.
