Things to do in Tempe When You're (about to be) Dead

This will be my first road trip for a Buffs game against Arizona St. Any recommendations for things to do in Tempe or the greater Phoenix area would be great.

Who else is making the trip?

What do you like to do ?
Where are you staying ? Will you have a car ?
What's your budget ?

I'll be traveling with a few college buddies. We're staying in a hotel just north of the river. We're looking to enjoy some night life and get some good eats. We're not looking for any sort of physical activity like golf or rock climbing. We're looking to have fun, not necessarily Rugged fun, but fun.

Mill Ave. or St. I forget which, has bars...sort of like Pearl St. I think, I don't really remember. The cops did lose the DUI paperwork and the alleged drunk driver got off scott free.....

I graduated from ASU 6 years ago but I'm a diehard Buff. Grew up in CO. Mill Ave is within walking distance of the stadium and has tons of bars. As far as bars go it's better than Pearl street. There is a massive parking lot just north of the stadium that everyone tailgates in. Will probably open at 3:00 or so.

Mill Avenue is no Pearl Street, but it should do you right before the game. Friday night and Saturday after the game, I'd head up to Old Town Scottsdale (not too far from where you're staying, maybe a $10-15 cab). The douche factor is high, but the scenery is worth it.

Old Scottsdale has a pretty good nightlife district off Camelback Road.

I had fun buying liquor at Walgreens.

ASU is like a large JUCO and many kids transfer from there to the U in Tucson. The Phoenix area is possibly the most boring large metroplex in the U.S. If I was going to a Buff P12 road game, ASU would always be my last choice, even below Corvallis or Pullman. I have to go to Maricopa County pretty often, and I always pack a few books in my luggage. ASU = bad plastic surgery, bad dyed hair, fake Valley girl talk squared. F'in Hideous. Dial down your expectations and kick back a lot of liquor.

Tempe is the porn star breeding grounds. lots of talent at the strip clubs.
What the **** is wrong with you people. Pics or GTFO!

Step up your games! Rookies, sheesh.

The first sentence is just false. About as many kids transfer from CSU to CU as from asu to ua. In other words, not many. And Pullman over Tempe? C'mon man.

I honestly wasn't all that impressed with the talent when I was down there in 2007. Don't get me wrong, there is decent talent, but I think Boulder is better personally. The fans were a bit douchy, but nothing over the top.

ASU is a commuter college for the most part though, isn't it?

Kinda weird.

I get the sense that a lot of in-state kids commute. Weird campus and even weirder now that they've split their campus between Tempe and downtown.

Anyone coming from out of town will probably want to avoid downtown Phoenix. It's safe enough, but completely dead after 6 and on the weekends. Don't make the mistake of thinking it is going to be like LoDo.

OK, I'll give you Tempe over Pullman, but my I have a strong bias toward the big waterfalls in downtown Spokane.

Its amazing how many hard miles people in the Phoenix area have on them.

That desert sun turns Arizona skin into saddle leather.

For every potential Tempe12 calendar girl and aspiring porn star wondering around ASU, there are two hundred hags who have been road hard, with a hide that resembles beef jerky, and eyeballs that have dimmed from booze, blow, Mexican weed and payote.

I'm looking at you, Stevie Nicks.

OK, I can by the dimmed eyeballs and ridden hard stuff, but her skin is hardly the shade of beef jerky. She almost looks like a vampire to me. Hardly any color to that skin at all.

I have been down a long rode....seems like someone rowed herd on me, but I just keep on. I grab my oar and road to safety. Too many kaktus buttons, I guess.

Are you kidding?

Go to Scottsdale. A bit douchey but very fun. Great nightlife. Nice hotels for an affordable price. Good restaurants. Best part of the Phoenix area, in my limited experience. It's quite close to Tempe, also.

Not much. ASU would beat out Wazzu only if I couldn't spend an extra day in Spokane. PHX metro area is REALLY dull. Been there a lot.

SMFH. Must be spending a lot of time in Mesa or Sun City when you visit the Valley.
