Notes from my first game at Folsom

Buffs, I meant to get this post out earlier in the week but it's been a busy one at work. Most of you are probably geeking up for the ASU game and are done looking back by now.

Folsom -- You have the most beautiful college football stadium that I've been to - my (humble) list of compares that I've attended is below. I'm excited about CU football; Mrs. Hokiehead and I plan to make to the rest of the home games now that we're relocated here and somewhat settled in. But then, I'm kind of a college football geek and averaged > 10 games a year when I lived in Raleigh.

Passes out at halftime -- Virginia Tech got rid of this in 2011, citing 9/11 as a reason. Impact was that everyone stays inside for the game, except for those with too much money who buy extra tickets just so they can leave and come back in (bastards). I hated the policy change and bitched about it for a few years. However, I noticed last Saturday that a lot of people left and didn't come back and realize that the policy I hate might have a positive side.

Fans -- pretty good, considering the score. I can't say that many of the people around me were really into the game, but there were enough "serious fans" trying really hard to be. Was that booing I heard near the end of the half? I'm guessing it was over the poor tackling. Not judging, I've heard Hokie fans boo at Lane Stadium and even my fellow Packer faithful boo at Lambeau. Most fans were gone by the start of the 4th -- I don't hold it against you. Given that it was Family Weekend (my first as a Buff dad!), I realize the crowd last Saturday may not be representative.

Tradition -- Ralphie running the field might be among the Hokie Bird dancing the Hokie Pokie in terms of great college football traditions. Band and cheerleaders were reasonable.

The game and the team -- I won't pretend I can give an educated evaluation of college football team, but here's . Wood is a work in progress. Running game showed some potential and the O-line played reasonably well. Oregon's O feels really fast paced watching it live -- I'd be talking to the dude next to me about the last play when the next one snapped. Tackling was terrible.

Go Buffs!

College home stadiums attended
Lane Stadium - Virginia Tech (I love the Hokie Stone at Lane, but inside and out, I think Folsom is nicer)
Keenan Stadium - UNC (to be clear, that's North Carolina)
Wallace Wade Stadium - Duke (yes, that's right, Duke football)
Carter Finley Stadium - NC State (only negative experience I've ever had as a visiting fan)
Clemson Memorial Stadium - Clemson
Grove Stadium - Wake Forest (until this year might have had the nicest scoreboard in the ACC)
Camp Randall Stadium - Wisconsin
Neyland Stadium - Tennessee (I have to admit that Rocky Top beats the Hokie Pokie in every possible way)
Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium - East Carolina
Jack Trice Stadium - Iowa State (I went as a kid, 30+ years ago and honestly don't remember the place)
Veteran's Memorial Stadium - UW LaCrosse (quantity over quality!)

thanks for the feedback. The past 8 years or so have been really hard on fans and they are looking for an excuse to do something else. When the team is good, the fans show up and the place is electric. Hopefully you can experience Folsom like that.

I've only been two on-campus stadiums (Folsom/Byrd), a third if you want to count the Navy football field where I saw lax game. I got some catching up to you to do, I would really like to get to Neyland, Camp Randall, Lane, and Death Valley (Clemson

My sister lived outside of Baton Rouge and I am disappointed I never went to an LSU game.

I'm going to Carter-Finley tomorrow as a visiting fan, hopefully I don't have a bad experience like you did. How was Clemson? That looks like an awesome place to go to a game.

You'll be fine. NCSU has a few jerks but it's nothing unlike most anywhere else, you're just more likely to get a comment or two at Carter-Finley than you are at a place like Wake Forest. They won't be out for blood against Syracuse, no worries.

Last year had a big impact on the crowds at Folsom. Throughout all the prior years of bad teams attendance stayed fairly high and the fans stayed pretty well engaged. Last years attendance numbers were still pretty good but that is based on tickets sold and many of those were sold before it became obvious exactly how completely awefull the team actually was.

The number of people in the stadium started to drop off dramatically once we got into the meat of the conference schedule. We also saw huge numbers of people who went to the games leaving earlier and earlier. Lots of those people didn't renew as ticket buyers this year. I think That people have also become more accepting of the idea of leaving early. The level of fan interest and dedication has taken a big hit due to last year and now has to be won back by the product on the field.

I do believe that given a competitive team that offers fans the opportunity to celebrate some victories the crowds will come back and the enthusiasm and dedication will return as well. Some of those lost fans are lost forever but the market is out there to replace them plus some if, and this is the big if, the quality of the product justifies it.

When the place is full and the fans are into it Folsom becomes a whole different experience. The closeness of the field and the angle of the stands traps the energy when the place is full and rocking. When that is happening anyone who wants to leave early (or get there late) is crazy and missing something significant.

I was just thinking about the college stadiums I've visited the other day. I think Folsom and Florida State's are the two most aesthetically pleasing I've seen with Falcon Stadium right behind.
Folsom, Air Force, Michigan, Florida State, Rose Bowl, Aloha Stadium, CSU's high school field, Boise State, Fuskerville, Sam Boyd (UNLV). We're heading to Tempe tomorrow for the game.

Agree -- it was random that I sat next to the few drunk rednecks who got sore about a Hokie cheering for his (winning) team. It could've happened anywhere.

Clemson fans are great -- no issues. I have a favorite story about Clemson fans at the ACC Championship game in Charlotte. I was sitting next to a Clemson guy and we're talking and getting along well. in the 3rd quarter, Clemson's up on my Hokies alredy when their cornerback intercepts a pass and heads for the endzone. This Clemson guy next to me gets excited starts yelling and jumping and pounding me on the back! I'm thinking "Dude, I want to be cool here but I'm f*cking not celbrating with you...." Once he calmed down he realized what he did and apoligized. we laughed, all good.

nice! have fun on your road trip. I'll make it to Falcon next, I think.

Games at the AFA are a really unique experience. The athletes are certainly not the same as watching Oregon's track team in helmets but the pagentry is worth seeing at least once. To watch the cadets march in and take the field then their seats, the fly overs, the falcon, the cadet wing doing cheers in unison, etc. are a good show all on their own.

I'd still rather see Ralphie run than any individual part of the Falcon stadium experience but it is worth a visit. If you can make it for a service academy matchup even better since they pull out all the stops.

Actually I lied, I've been to WVU as well (so make that 3 on-campus stadiums), when i saw the Buffs play there. That was a good experience (despite the loss), a few annoying WVU fans but there was actually one who apologized for their behavior. Whenever you go as a visiting fan, you can expect some ribbing it comes with the territory.

Being 2.5 hours away from Philly, I should probably get up there one of these days for Army-Navy.

It would have been quite a different experience if CU was ranked or especially if you'd gone there to see Maryland.

I work with a VT guy and he has nothing but bad things to say about WV fans.

Hah, yeah there is no love lost between those two. Naturally, I sympathize with the Mountaineers in that rivalry. They really should be playing nearly every year. I've never personally had much issue with WVU fans, but I'm not a Terp, Hokie or Pitt fan. However, I was at the 2002 bowl game between UVA/WVU in Charlotte when both teams were top 20 and there were about 35k Hoos and 40k Eers capacity crowd. UVA's snotty little pep band did a "Beverly Hillbillies" skit on the field at halftime that rightfully REALLY pissed off WVU. UVA and WVU were playing basically annually until the mid-80's when the pep band did a "Beverly Hillbillies" skit at halftime in like '87 and infuriated WVU so much that the series was ended. That bowl game in '02 was the first meeting since then and the pep band goes out and does "part II" of it. Completely inappropriate, ignorant and classless. It got extremely ugly after that, fueled even more by UVA kicking their ass that day. Thankfully, it led to the pep band being forcibly ended (always hated the pep band).

Damm that is over the top

Welcome Hokie no better place to watch a game than Folsum especially if your kid is playing, best years of my fatherhood even when we were mediocre.

Anyone going to the game tonight can relax any expectations of Sun Devil Stadium. Other than the nice location, wedged between two "mountains," it is a dump. Arizona Stadium in Tucson is about the same quality as Sun Devil, although I haven't been there since they completed their renovation. Best college stadium I've been to is Folsom, followed by Air Force, Memorial Stadium (kNU), whatever Mizzou's stadium is called, Arizona Stadium, Sun Devil Stadium and, lastly, the Alamo Dome, which is the ****tiest **** hole I've ever been in.

Suit up and beat the rams by 50 points?

fify

Part of what irritates me so much about them. They win by a point and it was a great victory demonstrating how we suck and they belong. We win by 20 and they spend the next year claiming that they were one lucky play and two bad calls away from beating us.

Need to start putting the whipping on them every year to a point that they lose all hope of winning. Turn the game into a scrimmage for us, a tune-up that they have to endure.

Shows how far we have fallen that we even worry about the outcome of a game against a bottom end MWC team.

The NC State tailgate scene was pretty impressive I have to admit. This fanbase is more redneck than I expected
