Assistant Coach at University of Colorado under Eddie Crowder 1968-1970.

Head Coach Washington 1975-1992.

He passed away this morning from pancreatic cancer. He will always be the Dawgfather to Husky Nation.

It's amazing to view his coaching tree (all under Crowder as well):

(interesting site BTW)

I found it interesting that Pete Carroll is under Coach Crowder's tree as well, twice removed from Les Steckel.

The Dawgfather may not be here anymore, but his presence is still strongly felt in the ranks of college and NFL football. His legacy will still shine on...

It's a sad day for college football and Husky Nation.

Wanna bet Frei does a column on him and includes himself and his dad?

I wouldn't mind that.

Frei is one of the few writers still working who actually bothers to do reasearch and look for stories. I also give him credit for having respect for those who responsible for what we have now in sports.

He stays away from the sensationalism that is so common today and doesn't go digging for "dirt."

Don James dominated the pac 10 like nobody ever has or will. His teams of the mid-80 to the mid-90's were dominant. RIP Dawgfather.

How is Jimbo Fisher in Jimbo Fisher's coaching tree? That's a pretty neat trick.

I always respected and at times like the UW teams under James. They were really good and he seemed like a class act. RIP Mr. James.

He coulda been the Buffs' HC to replace Eddie Crowder. Eddie took Mallory instead and wouldn't even give James an interview, despite his HC record and past association as Eddie's DC. I love what Eddie did as a coach, but as AD he left a lot to be desired. Even Mac was forced upon him!

Poor Warren Moon, he lost his former college coach (James), pro coach(Bum Phillips) and the NFL owner who brought him back into the League from Canada(Bud Allen) all within the space of a few days! RIP to all these gents!

That tree contains Dan Hawkins and Josh McDaniels, so it's safe to say I hate Don James.
