Exhibition games

Does CU not play exhibition games? This time of year big schools play non-official games against local, usually lower-division schools. For example, Kansas played Pittsburgh State last night, Wisconsin plays D3 Wisconsin-Platteville tonight, and North Carolina plays UNC-Pembroke. Some schools play more than one (UNC has two.) I don't recall if CU has played them in the past, but apparently they aren't this year. Wouldn't Colorado Christian or Mines jump at the chance to play CU to tune up for the season?

The NCAA allows for any combination of 2 scrimmages or exhibition games. Tad seems to favor the scrimmages.

I thought we played Boise St. and lost.

That was a scrimmage. Scrimmages are closed to the press and public and are usually played against teams of equal stature (UNC played Vanderbilt in a scrimmage last weekend.) Exhibitions are open to the public and usually played against inferior local teams.

OK, thanks. I didn't know that. Do we have another one scheduled?

Yes. SMU on Saturday.

You're much better off scrimmaging legit competition than you are beating the **** out of a D3 school by 70.

Previously we used to scrimmage teams like "EA sports all-stars". If I remember correctly they weren't bad, but they were a bunch of former college players that didn't get a pro contract or something. I thought those were a lot better than the directional schools we played early in the season. I would guess the NCAA had a problem with it as I don't see anyone playing those teams any more.

I think it's a different strategy when you are trying to make the tournament(and win some games in it). You'll sacrifice a meager payday to find out your strengths/weaknesses.

I'm guessing the coaches hate boards like this one for these exhibitions, it was a lot easier 20+ years when fans weren't discussing these games and details leaked out.

I remember watching exhibition games between Maryland and the Globetrotters on TV. And not their show, but actually playing ball. This was around the time of them winning their championship. Those were pretty entertaining games, typically the semi-pro team would be way more talented, but not playing as a team.

I think the strategy has changed under Turgeon. I'm not sure how many scrimmages they did under GW, I remember going to a MD-Roanoke (D-League) game a while back.

Or, you know, this...

They were down 9 with about 4 minutes to go....
Syracuse lost one some years ago to a no-name. Sure it's embarrassing for the time being, but in the long run who really cares? I remember when I was student and we barely beat minor Colorado school in a regular season game (forget which one specifically) and granted we aren't as good as we are now, it was the same feeling.

Playing a D2 school like Adams State or Colorado Christian was a good confidence builder back when we were hoping to end the season at .500 including the OOC schedule. Team got a chance play against somebody they weren't seeing in practice every day and still do the things that the coaches wanted them to do.

For a team like we are now that has legitimate expectations of going to the tourney each year playing a team that probably isn't as talented as some of our walk-ons doesn't do us a lot of good. Tad gets more good out of having some tape against a legit oppenent that he can use to show guys where they need to improve.

Oregon was down to Point Loma at half by 2. They ended up winning by 16. Mike Moser and Damyean Dotson didn't play, but recently eligible hardship transfer Joseph Young led all scorers with 21.

So do we know how we did? Sounds like we are struggling.

Just so people know Boise is 42 in kenpom rankings, SMU is 76 and Colorado is 39.

Did we play at SMU?

Nothing yet, scrimmage was here.

FWIW - as much as I like KenPom, his ratings aren't great until a couple of week into the season - he doesn't take into account anybody coming in (be it transfers or frosh or RS frosh). Only what is returning. Dan Hanner from ReamGM wrote this projection article for this ESPN Insider, ranking each team. He goes into full detail here on how he does his projections, but in summary he is basically able to simulate Offensive Rating by Juco rankings and recruiting services star ratings. He's back tested this and has a fairly decent rating system.

Here's an article comparing the two pre-season ratings

Hanner has CU 32nd, with a best case of 11th and a worst case of 62nd and he has CU 3rd in the Pac-12. He has this to say about CU - Colorado is a high-risk team because outside the Buffaloes' top four players, the team is going to rely heavily on freshmen, and they're going to miss Andre Roberson's defense. But if things click, Colorado's upside is very high.

For comparison - Boise is 41st and SMU is 105th in Hanner's rankings.

Thanks just wanted to get some rankings out there to show the level of competition we played. Both teams can end up as RPI top 100 with Boise possible in the top 50.

Speaking of exhibition games, I remember one year while I was there that Marathon Oil came in and beat us. Think that was '94 or '95.

Scrimmages probably help the team more.

I'm guessing with an exhibition, the program would make more money if they get a decent crowd in there. Also gives players that might not be used to playing in front of a big crowd, the feel for it.

Pre-season game. I am sure Tad was not overly concerned with winning as much as getting certain guys in certain positions. Heard on Twitter, Arizona had trouble with St. Mary's. I will try and find the tweet.

ugggh now officially nervous for this coming Friday. Damn you buffs. basketball is all I have left.
