jeez, some of you guys are bitter, negative people who appear incapable of seeing the positive in anything. I get we have sucked for years. I get how frustrating it is. Like many of you, I have been a fan for more than 2 decades so I have also been through the highs and lows.

Noone honestly came into the season realistically expecting to compete with ranked BCS teams. How could anyone watching that game last night, or reviewing the statistics from the game honestly feel like there is no progress being made? It's fine to say we have a long way to go still or that we need to start winning some games. I agree, but some ABers act like nothing is new over previous years.

When was the last time we were as competitive into the 4th quarter against a ranked BCS team? We have most of the same players from last year with a handful of good freshman playing yet the product on the field is SOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than last year.

Stats_UCLA.jpg

You look at those stats and you wouldn't actually be sure who won that game. I know in the end it's all about the W's but when we are coming off arguably the worst season in the history of our team and one of the worst of all teams in the history of BCS conferences, I don't understand how you can't see how this game showed our team is getting better and actually looked like a BCS (albeit a lower tier BCS team) against a ranked BCS/Pac 12 opponent on the road.

I am convinced the W's will be coming-probably just one this year if we are lucky but each year is going to get better under HCMM.

Well we do read articles that UCLA basically said they had a bye week. I think we are in wait in see mode. Sefo looked good. Powell ran hard but don't know if UCLA just wasn't into it.

Hard to believe we lost that game by 22 pts. Finishing drives was the difference.

I agree-plus the one turnover and a few of our false starts killed us too. We are close, honestly closer than I thought we would be in HCMM's 1st year to actually being competitive with good Pac 12 teams.

There can be some balance. I think it's reasonable to say last night was a step forward. It's also reasonable to call out the defensive performance against Zona and the overall effort against ASU.

Posters have actually tried to spin the defensive performance against Zona because we "contained" Carey. Posters were trying to defend the performance against ASU (25-0 after one quarter) by saying it could have been worse than 54-13.

It's okay to just say ****ty play is ****ty play. It's also okay to look beyond the score last night and see plenty of positives.

Since when is cheering on a football game predicated on witnessing progress?

Yes, I see progress. What is so important about progress?

I see a three score loss against a conference foe.

This isn't coming from a place of bitterness. It's just not candy coating a loss with some arbitrary feel good story.

Anybody who watches with some level of understanding of the game would have to admit, this team is getting better. The problem is they are still losing, sometimes in true receiving end of the butt kicking fashion. Most don't care about improvement, they want to see a W. I agree, I kind of don't care that they are showing improvement but still a non-factor in the P12. Shoot, they are not only a non-factor, aside from Cal, they are the guaranteed W of the league, sort of what Baylor used to be for the B12. All that said though, they are getting better. They just have so far to go, sometimes it is hard to care.

All the black/white win/lose is all type CU fans should just quit watching for another year or two. We were too bad, too slow, too small to turn this around instantly.

Personally, I want to see it keep up. People are saying we've turned a corner. Maybe. I thought the effort vs Oregon was nice, but how much does it matter when we forget to show up the next week against ASU? I'm waiting to see what we do vs Washington this week. String together a few nice efforts and you'll have me convinced a corner has been turned.

That has really been this team's MO for years now. Some years Hawk would start a year off nicely, I'd think ok they've bought in and we're turning this around. Then, we'd lose 72-0 against Mizzou or UCLA or someone. There were a couple of instances under Embree with the same thing. A nice effort or win and then fail to show up the next week and undo any good the previous week had established.

I think the game was encouraging, but hard for me to say it's progress as it was only 1 game. If they give Washington a competitive game, I think I'd agree.

Also, last year's team did not have PRich, which is a big boost for the offense. I'm very convinced that if Connor Wood is starting that game (and this is not meant as a slam on him personally, as I hear he is a great kid), it is over by halftime. Sefo is a big upgrade at QB.

You think we're going to start winning games without making progress? You expect an instant leap from where we've been to where we want to be?

Alrighty then....

No ****.

If you thought the only definition of getting better is beating ranked opponents on the road, quit watching for a while, because it's going to be a while.

Great post/thread, Boyd. If watching the Buffs brought me nothing but negative thoughts and feelings, I'd find another hobby.

+1 +1 +1 +1 +1

Who the hell goes from laughing stock in the nation to conference contender in 1 year? It requires a transition. We had a totally losing culture under WB& Co (and Halk towards the end especially). HCMM has to do a major culture change, while coaching up the guys he has and improving the roster through recruiting.

Did anyone have higher expectations this season than hoping to see progress on the field? That is to say, almost everyone on AB predicted somewhere between 2 and 4 wins this season and all hoped to see us be more competitive on the field.

For F sake, we finally saw a BCS caliber performance out of the Buffs against a ranked BCS/Pac12 team. Even if they didn't bring their A game (which is an unproven assertion), that performance was miles ahead of what we got out of our teams the last few years, even when the other team had their 2nd or 3rd stringers in.

Thanks. Exactly. I get the doom and gloom mentality. We have put up with way too much for a once proud fan base. But how can you watch that product on the field and not feel at least a little hopeful that we may actually turn this thing around? I think some of the hard core pessimists may actually be Fuskers fans or just plane miserable people who go through life looking for the negative in everything. As you say, what a way to live!

Are you serious with this ****? Do you expect to go from **** to good instantly? Must be nice in your fantasy world.

I love how White Rabbit made the most reasonable post in the thread and it gets completely ignored.

It's a good post. I'm not sure there's much for anybody to add to it or disagree with.

True, although a bit odd Boyd is too worried about the mental health of people disagreeing with him to participate in his own thread.

The Washington State victory in Pullman last season was progress. But there was a relapse.

CU is not the rock bottom worst team in college football. Whoopee doo!

The UCLA game this weekend was both entertaining and frustrating. I fail to consider this as some monumental signature loss that indicacates the dawn of a new era that some people are making this out to be. It mostly looked like another butt kicking to me.

Who are these people? They aren't here.

And still, there is going to have to be progress in games we lose before we actually get good. If you expect otherwise, you're going to be pretty pissed off for a long time.

I call a spade a spade. The theme of the board this week is "celebrate progress". I am neither pissed nor on board with the company line.

It was a loss, just like many of us predicted. Nothing more, nothing less.

If you want to hang your hat on the progress theme, knock yourself out.

The psychological responses to going through years of losing are fascinating, particularly for our fan base. Would make for an interesting study.

I don't have a problem with people pointing out that we need to see more progress and eventually see more wins. I have a problem with people who fail to accept that we are witnessing progress, and I am in disagreement with the philosophy that progress is useless and wins are the only thing that matters.

As many others in this thread and in others have pointed out, you don't go from 1-11 and worst team in the league to a bowl the next season. At least that would be a nearly unprecedented demonstration of rapid progress.

It is frustrating that some people can actually watch that game last night, yes be frustrated with the opportunities missed, but also fail to recognize that we have a team and coaching staff that is starting to improve and are far from the laughing stock we were last year.

Some of us Kool-Aid drinkers, glass 3/4 full or whatever you want to call us, prefer to live life looking for the positives in the situation b/c the alternative is bordering on depression.

Yes, we have a long way to go to get back to where we once were, and it is not a certainty we ever will, BUT we finally have reason for optimism based on tangible improvements ON THE FIELD vs. blind optimism and faith during spring and summer. No we don't have the wins to show for it but we have real evidence, including the stats I posted that was based on our 1's against their 1's, in a road game against a ranked team, that this is certainly not the embarrassment of a team we had last year.

And like WR says, let's see some consistentcy before we go overboard. A couple more November performances like last night and I will believe it is real tangible progress. If we lay eggs the rest of the rest of the way, last night does not look as good.

Being better than last season has always been a near certainty.

This. If I did not look at the positives (there have been very few over the last couple years) I would go insane. That is why we are fans. We are supposed to watch CU football to get enjoyment. This is why I have to look at the positives and every bit of hope I can possibly get, I would rather dwell on that than the negatives or I will be miserable. I have a friend who loves the broncos, but every time we watch the game all he does is dwell on the negatives and he is upset even after a win. I just do not understand how someone can not get excited a bit about the positives and still be a fan especially after what we have been through. The argument could be that you do not want to get disappointed, well that's life. You have to sometimes get excited about small things.
