Rough signing day for Illinois basketball

I was watching a hoops game the other day and the announcers were talking up how Illinois was going to be bringing in a monster class.

First, Quentin Snider switched his commitment from Illinois to Louisville. Oh no's!

That was a tough loss.

But they still were going to get Cliff Alexander, a consensus Top 5 recruit this year. Right? Everyone said he was an Illinois lock.

Then this happened:

Ouch! Not that I'm an Illinois fan or anything, but as a fan and recruiting nut, I feel their pain.

The Illinois fans' reaction was better.

I still hate Illinois. With their 1000 3's a game

Kansas. Which, apparently, was the "best decision for him and his family". Hmmm.

That was a very odd quote. I hate the hat ceremonies. If you're going to do it, do it right, grab the hat that you're planning to wear, and get it over with.

Good. **** Illinois. Something about them irked me last year, well before the game even started. Just last night in the Stanford game, the announcers were talking up Illinois likely having a monster class.

It's funny seeing a lot of the reaction vids have the same quotes like "well he said the University of..., that couldn't be KU, wtf?!!" Yeah, they don't know that KU goes by the University of Kansas.

Loved those videos. "Why would he do that?!"

The Illinois fans that visited last year were so God-awful bland. It was as if those threads were being smothered by play-dough--but not even a cool color of play-dough. They lacked the self-importance of nebraska fans, and the misguided moral compass of Baylor fans. I couldn't put my finger on it...they just sucked in the most uninteresting way a group of fans could suck.

Speaking of which we need to step our AB game up, what is up with Dad(?) getting in a quick bump as his son shuns the IL hat? Yayo!

Why were these kids filming themselves watching this announcement in the first place. Is that the thing to do these days?

I find this interesting that they were so disappointed on camera, because their message boards were calling KU before the announcement (of course, not everyone may follow the boards and rumors too much).

I'd beg to differ - Alexander was always very interested in KU, and many thought it was a toss up between the two schools, some even calling a KU lean. Of course, this doesn't stunt Illinois fans' disappointment, but I'm sort of surprised they were so shocked. Okafor was also thought to be a toss-up between KU and Duke, and although 247 and many others thought he was a Duke lock, I think many Duke fans would not have been too shocked if he and Tyus Jones chose KU.

Self is a monster recruiter it seems. I have been really impressed these last two years.

Fun day yesterday imo.

These hat announcements are just so lame. I'm surprised he didn't say, "I'm takin' my talents to Lawrence."

I used to think these announcements were interesting and kind of fun. I've switched to viewing them as completely disrespectful to the schools the kids flat out diss. Horrible.

But I did like the vids of Illini fan - too funny.

My sentiments exactly. Why pull a mean-spirited prank on the recruiting staff that took interest in the athlete and spent the time to recruit them--presumably in a respectful manner. It would be more appropriate to quietly thank them for their interest, but they've decided to go in a different direction.

But yeah, I share your hypocrisy in enjoying the pain of Illinios fans. I guess anybody who videos their reaction to an announcement kind of gets what they deserve.

Was it my imagination, or were the folks somewhat complicit in those signing-day antics. Nice values to pass along...
