The Season in Review

I'm trying to get a feel for what really happened on the field this year; a summary of the team. Below is a table of comparative stats between years I pulled from http://www.cfbstats.com/2013/team/157/index.html.

A few things really stand out, particularly the points scored per game (ours up, opponents down). The swing in turnovers was also really dramatic on both sides of the ball. Penalties were also way down. It's pretty hard to dispute this team is much better than last year; I see it in the figures and what I see on the field.

I am not disappointed in this team or this year...they are much improved and were right in between the win range I had for them at season's start - 3-5 wins.

The offense was the main issue, particularly the O line. Our red zone success improved very little and cost us at least one win. If we can't run and protect, we go three and out and put tremendous pressure on the defense. Even an average PAC12 O line would get us to 6 wins next year. We have the talent at skill positions - maybe 2 years away from being really potent, but I don't see a lot of need, except at TE.

The defense played much better, dropping opponents in many categories: points/game down 17%, QB rating down 22%, red zone success down 11%. And let's not forget turnovers with 7 more interceptions this year. Next year I see only the slower guys leaving, opening up the spot for some more speed. If Crawley continues to get better and the D line can pressure the QB, I see a better D next year.

Special teams, much maligned, actually got much better from a very shaky start. We don't have much athleticism on the returns, but overall I think they are better than last year.

Bummed the season is over, but I anticipate bowling next season, barring any major injuries or attrition in the offseason.

Go Buffs!!!

The most important thing we need to take care of this year is Red Zone offense. It was nothing short of pathetic mostly due to the fact that our O-line is weak, our QB isn't good at quick reads (yet), and we have no size in our receiving corps. If we take care of 2 out of these three we are bowling next year.

Good stuff BC90. I'd rep you if I was near a computer. What really impresses me is the 14 point improvement swing from last year based on points and points allowed. That is a good sign in the first year.

Excellent work. One takeaway is many, many fans had too high of expectations. We went thru a season with basically zero extremely costly injuries, and once again relied on true Frosh for a lot of PT. An injury to Harris would have been devastating, for example.

The offense was clearly better this season. No question we had more big plays and actually moved the ball well outside of the red zone. Need Sefo to become a more sound QB mechanically while keeping him upright, and next year probably isn't that bad.

I expect to see bigger steps forward on defense next season before I am convinced things are turned around there. No more youth excuses next season and potentially some depth at some positions.

Special teams are what they are. Mostly the same as it has been for a while.

With special teams, I think we'll be good. Punting and Kicking will be seniors who have performed. Returners all come back, so the baseline should be higher even if no one takes those jobs. Increased depth and less youth in the defensive back 7 should improve coverage teams. And Diego should give us kickoffs that take returners out of games without having to give up field position on squib kicks.

I believe we'll make a bowl game and I'm pinning a lot of my hopes for next season on having an advantage on special teams.

With that, improved OL & DT play and improved decision-making from our QB... I believe that HCMM will pull a couple extra wins out of his ass with Parcells-style game management.

A good start for kick returns would be to kneel down a lot more. No need to start short of the 25 so often.

I saw huge improvements in special teams. There's a big difference between good and bad special teams. We went from abysmal to adequate.

Thanks BC90. It's nice to see improvement in almost all areas, with the obvious exception being special teams (only one part - Kick Return - improved slightly).

They're in the OP, sacky. About the same as last year, but slightly worse.

I can't see the OP.

The first two or three games were a special teams nightmare. They got better as the year went on. Aside from the blocked punt against USC, they seemed to get their act together.

We declined in every category except kickoff returns....

Solid improvements in turnovers and penalties. This was a much more disciplined football team than in 2012.
