Another thread about adding sports dreams

I know squat about hoops, but having just watched Miller's highlights and re-reading this thread (and trusting my fellow ABers), he seems like the best available body for Tad's style. I'm excited to have him on board... now, when the hell is CU gonna bring back wrestling, dammit.

When are they going to bring back baseball, dammit?

I know it'll probably never happen, but as a Pac-12 school it would seem fitting. All the Pac-12 schools have pretty decent baseball programs. Oregon State, Arizona State, USC, UCLA jump to mind.

When football gets back on track baseball is the first program we need to add. I would love to see CU hockey, but that seems like a long shot.

Men's lacrosse, could create a powerhouse with the emergence of lacrosse on the West Coast and Colorado

We need a spectator sport for the spring. LAX makes the most sense for CU from a cost/benefit standpoint.

Softball--along with the sports I used to attend many years ago that have been cut, men's and women's gymnastics and swimming and diving.

I didn't like wrestling and have no idea if it would be popular in the Pac12

Now a horrible sport in college (there is NO ping/pflug in baseball!) when true baseball fans can drive a short distance to Coors Field for the real thing!
Yeah I know: the Rockies not a real major league team....yada yada yada.....there's still no ping/pflug in Coors!

Same thing with hockey....NHL in The Can!

DU averages at least 5k at Magness, I believe it holds upwards of 7k. And sure Denver reigns supreme with regards to baseball with Coors Field. But in a smaller community like Colorado Springs they average around 5k a game in a stadium that doesnt hold much more then 8k. Who knows maybe Boulder area residents would rather watch a Buffs baseball team rather than'drive to watch an inept pro team.

I don't have much insight into what they would actually add, but I would guess that men's lacrosse would probably be the easiest since they are adding a woman's team.

What I would pay to watch: men's hockey.
what I would like to see: men's & women's swimming & diving.
whats most likely: women's rowing.

Rick George is a baseball guy, so it wouldn't surprise me if we saw a return of baseball and softball at some point. We still have at least ten years before that would be feasible, IMO. They're expensive sports with very little revenue opportunities. We have zero facilities, so they would have to be built from the ground-up. The smart thing to do, if it could be pulled off, would be to get the programs endowed. I would venture a guess that it would take a $150MM endowment to fully fund a baseball and softball program.

Wrestling is very popular in the Big 12.

There's probably some peer pressure involved with prioritizing a baseball program. Sucks being the only Pac 12 school without a team, and I'm sure RG and Larry Scott would like to see that fixed.

I would drive further to watch a minor league/College baseball game. Going to Coors Field is great and all, but its a huge hassle, and expensive. I grew up with a local minor league team, and it was great. Tickets were only a couple bucks ($12 now), you parked a short walk to the stadium (but not too close or you could get hit by a foul ball), and you could sit up close to actually see what is going on.

I think that the Boulder area would support a minor league/college team well. The problem with college baseball is not going to be the amount of people that will want to watch, but rather the weather, as the college season is so early.

Reguardless I would buy season tickets in a heartbeat.

There is no peer pressure to do that whatsoever, according to Bohn. Baseball is a money loser everywhere in the PAC12 and it's not in the PAC12's interest to make it more of a money loser. Adding more in-conference travel to a money loser is not to anyone's benefit.

Baseball was a large money loser before it was axed, mainly due to travel costs that are inherit for cold weather teams and the lack of local competition.

I discussed Lacrosse with Bohn as well and he said it would not be in the next 5 years. I've also discussed this with the Mens Club Lacrosse coach recently and they are excited to see the upgrades that have been put in place for the women, which the men can use. There would be NO facility investment required to move to D1. It would be cheaper in that way than baseball.
I believe CU would be competitive quickly, but outside of DU and Air Force, the team would also have to travel across the Mississippi river to get games.

I look for Colorado College to move up from D3 to D1 potentially in the next 3 years in Mens Lacrosse. At least that's their pitch right now.

Minnesota plays part of its games in the Metrodome and the new football stadium being built can accommodate baseball for the Gophers. Hard to see baseball being profitable in Boulder IMO, not that it is in most places I believe. I would love CU to have a baseball team but not counting on it anytime soon.

In terms of a minor league team, Boulder is probably big enough for a single A team but there's no leagues around -- they take buses at that level. The Rockies short-season A league team is in Grand Junction, so that's the closest league possible. You already got the AAA team in the Springs.

We could join DU as an associate member of the Big East in lacrosse. Travel would be heavy but at least we would be in there win DU.
