Soccer Update (offseason)

First of all, congratulations to the soccer team for a fantastic season and in particular the post season. The wins over DU and BYU got them into the sweet 16 for only the second time in program history.

Now, looking ahead to next season, CU looks like they will have a transfer from Santa Clara, Morgan Stanton. She's from Lakewood and was rated by Top Drawer Soccer as the #8 midfielder prospect in the nation coming out of HS. She also played for the U-17 national team in the world championships. She was a freshman this season at Santa Clara but she got almost no playing time.

Also, two CU freshmen, Brie Hooks and Alex Huynh were named to Top Drawer Soccer's Top 100 freshmen this season. Hooks was #74 and Huynh was #86.

MarkW,

In W-SOC, do transfers have to sit out a year? It seems like in other non-revenue sports like WVB we've had transfers play immediately.

From the NCAA site,

Q: Why do football and basketball players have to sit out a year after they transfer?

A: The year-in-residence is required to help student-athletes adjust to their new school and ensure that their transfer was motivated by academics as well as athletics. Student-athletes who participate in most NCAA sports are eligible for a one-time transfer exception, which allows them to compete immediately after transfer once in their college experience if they meet all other transfer requirements (such as being academically eligible).

However, student-athletes in sports that are historically academically underperforming – including basketball, football, baseball and men’s ice hockey – are not eligible for the exception. Though student-athletes in these sports can’t compete in their first year at their new school, they can receive an athletics scholarship and practice with the team. A waiver process is available to all student-athletes, and each waiver request is reviewed individually. From April 2011 to April 2012, the NCAA approved 91 transfer waivers and denied 71.

Buffs have gotten another transfer - this time it's Madi Hall from Portland. She, like Stanton, is from Lakewood and was a top 100 recruit in 2013.

Sounds like Sanchez and company are building quite the team and program. :gobuffs:

Colorado has some of the best girls club soccer in the nation, so it is awesome seeing the girls coming back home to play at CU. If Sanchez can lock down our borders in recruiting, we could be a perennial top-5 team.

Olympic sports going strong. She doesn't have to sit out either correct?

No sit out in Soccer.
Women's sports are pretty good in Colorado High Schools in general. Basketball, softball, volleyball, soccer, swimming and LAX come to mind.

But wait, there's more :)

Waltzing Matilda time again for the Buffs - this time it's Kahlia Hogg who is transferring from Florida State. Hogg has been on the Australian U-17 and U-20 national teams. She got very little playing time this season for FSU (75 minutes) which may be why she coming to Boulder.
