When is our next opening(s) coming up and who/what are we after? Also, what do our available numbers look like?

2 openings for 2015.

Ski Booker and the open scholarship from Jenkins leaving.

My guess is Boatwright and Hemsley.

Take a look at the 2015 profile index that's pinned and follow the links.

I hope we have 3 openings. I really think we need to land another 5. Scott could very well be gone by then.

Wait for 16 for the big man. I think 15 will be about shooters/wings, leaving a spot ready-made for Davis in 2016.

Tad got Tory Miller for that reason IMO. I would be willing to bet the staff is putting everything they've got into De'Ron Davis. I think we have a really good shot at him, and he is a program changer for sure. Could be Tad's first 5 star recruit.

I don't see him anywhere in the forum. Why do you think we are after him and that he is interested?

Because we are ****ing Colorado. We have a shot at everyone.

Misleading thread title. I anticipated a discussion on DBT's menstruation.

I'm happy that we were able to land Tory. But without a big in the '15 class, our roster may look something like this...

1) Hopkins 6-5 JR / Collier 6-2 SOPH / Talton 6-2 SR
2) King 6-5 JR / Stalzer 6-3 SR / Pflueger 6-5 FR*
3) Johnson 6-6 SR / Fletcher 6-6 JR
4) Thomas 6-8 JR/ Miller 6-8 SOPH / Boatwright 6-8 FR*
5) Gordon 6-9 JR

*denotes potential freshman recruit

Looking pretty thin on the front line if you asked me. And I know the argument of Tad wanting players that can run the floor, but there is something to be said for a couple 6'10+ big men on your team. Even if you slid Miller down to the 5, that doesn't leave us with much height. Also, who knows, maybe Scott will want to stay all 4 years. Maybe he will want to leave a legacy bigger than jumping early for the draft. But I am hoping our team looks like this if Scott leaves.

1) Hopkins 6-5 JR / Collier 6-2 SOPH / Talton 6-2 SR
2) King 6-5 JR / Stalzer 6-3 SR / Pflueger 6-5 FR*
3) Johnson 6-6 SR / Fletcher 6-6 JR
4) Thomas 6-8 JR / Miller 6-8 SOPH
5) Gordon 6-9 JR / Comanche 6-10 FR*

That gives us some height to develop. Then when '16-'17 rolls around, it'll look something like.

1) Hopkins 6-5 SR / Collier 6-2 JR / (recruit)
2) King 6-5 SR / Pflueger 6-5 SO
3) Fletcher 6-6 SR / (recruit) / (recruit)
4) Thomas 6-8 SR / Miller 6-8 JR / Davis 6'9 FR
5) Gordon 6-9 JR / Comanche 6-10 SO

I do think we'll have Scott back next year simply because he'll need at least another year to put on enough weight to play the 4 in the NBA and possibly two years if you believe his face-up game needs to extend beyond 17 feet.

But I'm starting to come around to the idea we may need to focus more heavily on true centers because of the rule changes that make it harder to guard the ball. That's easier said than done, though. Rivals had an update on Comanche after his NC State visit last week and the only official visit he said he intended to set up in the PAC was at Oregon with unofficials to ASU of UofA. No mention of us.

Wow, Comanche and Deron Davis is very optimistic. I'd be happy with just 1 of those 2.

Josh Scott is a good player, but he is going to have to add a more consistent mid range game to play in the NBA

I think that we need to primarily focus on recruiting some height. I know how most want 6'8-6'9 kids who can run the floor, but I think it is essential to have at least two that are 6'10+. Or at the minimum one that can be a solid contribution to our team. I don't even think we need a "true center", just some height.

I don't think there's any chance Scott will leave for the NBA early. He has a shot at playing in the league someday as do a few other guys on the team, but none look like early lottery picks, or even draftees at this point. Some of the frosh could develop that way perhaps. Perhaps.

No one's going to disagree with you in terms of wanting guys who are 6'10" or above who still have good feet and can get up the court.

Problem is, there aren't very many of those guys in the NBA. There are very few of them in college. For the most part, those guys end up at the elite programs. Below that, you're often recruiting plodders if you want that type of size. I'm not a big fan of bringing in plodders. We play man defense with a lot of switching. We excel in transition offense. I'd rather play Tad's style with 5 guys who are 6'8" or less than put such a premium on height that we are forced to play a half court style with zone defense. This is the tradeoff. Bzdelik was going to take us that direction with a bunch of plodding shooters and hide them in a zone. But even he saw that wouldn't work at our level of competition and shifted focus to guys like Sharpe and Burks, then Dre.

I'm leaning toward Scott staying 4 years but saying there's no chance is a bit extreme. His mid range game & FT shooting are excellent for his position. His biggest area for growth is clearly with his back to the basket. Though, he has great hands, Scott doesn't seem to have one consistent low post move yet. Sometimes he looks polished with his back to the basket but too often it looks like he's just chucking it at the hoop from 3-4 feet away without enough skill. Plenty of time before the '15 draft to improve there and I hope he does. Won't complain either way.

I think Tad's style is more 4 guys who are 6'5-6'8 and one big in an ideal world. I agree with your overall point. Can't be stated enough how lucky we were for the timing of Bzdelik's departure. He laid some of the foundation no doubt but the Princeton offense should never be your core principle if your home court is at altitude. A deep athletic squad that can gas visitors should always be the #1 goal in recruiting at Colorado

I think (hope) we end up with 3, and I think an optimistic, yet possible class would be Hemsley, Pflueger, and Boatwright.

That's 3 guys at 6'4", 6'4", and 6'8"/9" who all have perimeter skills, and Hemsley and Pflueger are GREAT athletes.

Even if we miss on some of these guys, Tad is after a ton of other high 4* talent even outside of other names mentioned in this thread.

As far as '16 goes, De'Ron Davis has been to a bunch of CU games, and Tad is hard after him. IMO, he's going to have to grow a few inches to retain that 5* status because he's not a great athlete. Mores than Scott, but not a particularly quick or explosive player. Great shooter and post skills though. I think he'll be around 6'10" or 6'11" by the time he signs.

Buffnik, I completely understand. I would rather have an athletic 6'8/6'9 Center than a stiff 7'0 footer. When it boils down to it, Tad is 79-38 (.67%) with Colorado. He hasn't proven us wrong yet. #intadwetrust

C'mon now DBT finished menopause when Fairbanks was a good coach

I had to give you a rep for that.

It would be awesome if a 5* recruit signs with the Buffs. I think it will happen for sure...the question is when that would happen.

Got to disagree with his mid range game. He's scoring at around a 62% clip when he takes shots around the basket (dunks, lay ups, tip ins), and 32% everything else. He definitely has the capacity to be a good mid range shooter (KU game should be strong evidence of this), but he is not there yet.

Is my addiction to hoop-math rubbing off ?

Scott is an interesting case study - I think it comes down to - is he athletic enough? He struggles when he tries to hedge on the p&r and get back to his man, also can he dunk? I joke, but his hops are.....lacking

There's nothing wrong with a mid-range game if you consistently knock down the shot.

I especially like seeing it from Scott, because he's going to get that as a wide open look almost every time since very few college 5s are going to get in his space for that shot.

Have always liked the stats side of the game, haha.. but there doesn't appear to be many websites that are as detailed towards the college game as pro-basketball-references seems to be for the NBA.

And yeah, Scott's lack of athleticism is why I think he's very likely to remain a 4 year player (not that there is anything wrong with that). Will need to further develop his mid range game in order to make it in the NBA imo. And even then, like you said, the athleticism will remain an issue

In terms of the player he models himself after, Tim Duncan, he's athletic enough to be that type of player. He'll never be Duncan but he doesn't need more athleticism to be an efficient post player. For a big who shoots 80% from the FT line, I love his mid-range ability. Few bigs have his ceiling in terms of mid-range shooting, just needs to tap into it more & refine it. Whether he's a 3 or 4 year player will come down to how much & how quickly he builds on his low-post repertoire. I want to see more skill out of him around the semi circle.

Scott is at least as athletic as a number of NBA players who are also similar in size. Most of these guys are role players but have solid careers doing it.

He will need to develop a more diverse offensive game including some scoring further out from the basket but that is normal with a guy at this stage of his development. In HS and even in college so far his inside game has carried him.

The big thing he will have to develop is his physical game. He has done a good job of putting on bulk and muscle, he just looks a lot more like an NBA ready body and I'm sure will continue to add to this. I still see him getting pushed around inside and avoiding contact to much though. The pro's are a much more physical brand of ball and he will have to adapt himself to that.

Does all this happen in one more year or will it take him a couple of more years, I'd guess the longer but what do I know.
