What does this class tell us so far?

We've heard a lot of bellyaching about how this class doesn't stack up... that's not what this thread is about. This thread is about the direction of CU Football under HCMM. Here's some interesting things about this class:

4 Defensive Backs, 3 of those are 6'1'' or taller.

6 Defensive Linemen (though a couple of those guys could get looks at LB)

4 Offensive linemen (counting Jones but not LS Smith, all are 6'5'' or taller and at 16 y/o Kaiser should only get taller)

To me, that seems like Mac isn't happy with the play of our safeties so far. We've got 3 guys who give us lots of size in the defensive backfield. Additionally, it seems he's unsatisfied with the defensive and offensive line play. IMO all the offensive linemen we've taken look like tackles. The interior seems fine, some of the guys who redshirted last season project as interior linemen, but HCMM wants some tall tackles.

Also, it seems like every defensive player we've got to commit is a good tackler. It looks like there's some very specific skills that HCMM wants. Considering how he built a pretty pathetic SJSU squad into a #21 ranked team, I think we can trust him that these gaps are major problems with the Buffs. What does that say about our current safeties and defensive line?

Agree with you on your last paragraph especially. What the class says to me:

We are offering and taking high school and Juco athletes deemed to be fundamentally sound. Smart football players. Good character guys expected to get it done in the classroom and excel in all facets of being a student athlete. Limiting the signing of head cases. Many recruits we voiced concerns about due to lack of prior exposure from recruiting analysts blew up their senior year as other coaching staffs watched senior tape and attended games. Shows me the CU staff recognizes potential and has been pretty spot on in charting players whose bodies and games will develop later which hopefully projects to further development at the college level.

It also tells me that because this recruiting strategy is applied to most of our commits that we are not getting a handful of the miracle recruits who chose us in a head-to-head battle with teams accustomed to bowling every year. With that being obvious we are excelling in getting the interest of those more in our league and getting to them with offers before the power programs come around to them as plans B and C. Those recruits who are seen as high character leaders on their high school teams who speak about loyalty to their school and teammates should be more likely to spurn the offers in which they are some other program's silver medals but to CU are the prize target.

Seeing more size, speed, and football talent. Not always together, but we are upgrading from a stable of 5'7" running backs and 5'10" safeties.

The LBs with traditional size who already hit like grown men and run like I-backs are still going to Stanford and Texas, but we're pulling ones who lock in on a ball carrier and wrap up. We've long groaned re: coachspeak about the "little things" but that's what we're improving. We're building the roster just a little faster and bigger as we realistically can but the real emphasis is on recruiting things that won't stick out at a combine but rather on game day. Footwork, angles, tackling.

It tells me that the current roster should not be complacent with incumbency. The best players who know the playbook and their assignments will play. No way we sniff a bowl game without it. Anyone not motivated to fight for their job and re-earn it should keep fighting every week during the season to make a meaningful contribution or look to finish their career elsewhere.

We'll have to wait until 2015 at the earliest, but with this first full class I am very excited to see how they play and respond to coaching. It should come easier based on the staff getting their guys whom they already know should be receptive to improvement with the correct coaching.

Breaking it down like that I've just been surprised by how heavily we've recruited more DB's. ON PAPER our Secondary (maybe not safeties) looked like our strong point with Yuri, Henderson, Crawley, Awuzie.
I'm disappointed it doesn't look like we are going to be pulling any OLine help from JC transfers, that alone could have impacted next year the most.

Aik, you're right. I like the emphasis on fundamentals. If you have a kid with good size who plays the position with textbook efficiency you can help them fill in the gaps in their game a lot better. You can teach them to read coverages and to position themselves to make a play. If you take a guy who's a physical freak with no football IQ it's a lot tougher to get them to where they need to be because you have to start over. I am loving Mac's approach to recruiting football players rather than athletes.

I am looking forward to seeing Witherspoon play. I think he'll have an immediate impact on the secondary. Big upgrade there.

Wow we are 5 posts into a recruiting thread and the suicidal tendencies group hasn't chimed in yet. Incredible. There is no doubt this class on paper is not competitive with the middle of the Pac, but we seem to be improving the athleticism of the roster almost top to bottom. And many guys with the bodies to put on more good weight.

I think line play and lack of speed were our biggest problems this year and I am optimistic we are correcting that with this class-although it definitely would have been nice to get a JUCO OT who could plug in ASAP.

Despite the doom and gloom from lots of ABers, based on the performance of HCMM's freshmen this year, I think the 2014 class will have lots of good surprises in it. And I think there are a handful of players that will get meaningful PT in 2014. That is far from ideal of course, but we are rebuilding so it is to be expected.

Go Buffs!

I would have liked to see a JUCO offensive lineman too, but I think we're okay. Munyer is better than he played last season and he or Crabb may well be moved to center where I think they're better players anyway. Then we've got Mustoe and Irwin who look pretty good. Nembot should get better and a few of the RS Freshman look like they could be players. I'm excited to see these dudes in Spring ball.

We lose 4 scholarship DBs to graduation after next year so we may need to go the JC route again to replace at least one of them, but for the time being I am more comfortable with that group than I have been in years since before that August 2011 article that was all "Greg Brown has 22 defensive backs on his roster and doesn't know if 4 of them are even good enough to start." If we can get any kind of pass rush that doesn't involve the one DE threat getting double teamed and the rest not being explosive enough to do anything then I like what our DBs give us in coverage.

Here you go. From this thread I have learned that high rated players are head cases, and lower or not rated players posses good fundamentals and are of high intelligence. We be bowling next year. Maybe BCS Bowl.

Not at all. The last 7 years I've seen plenty of low rated players who were head cases and players of all ratings and offer lists display ****ty fundamentals. Some sunshine has its place on a fan board. If there is nothing positive to speak of and no chance of a bowl game, why bother even following the team?

Nobody said any of that dumbass. Go pollute somewhere else or just stfu. I don't mind negative posts but goddamn. You never have anything positive to post.

I see this class as the building block of the program. These kids are the ones who will be the base kids that you can build off of and get the "wow" kids in the future. They may not be the best kids on the field on gameday, however, they will play fundamentally sound and have a workman like mentality. It's a nice start to go off of. Most of the guys from last years recruiting class were Embry's guys except for Addison and a few others.

I am optimistic for the development of this team but I have serious concerns with the offensive line and unfortunately this is one place that you can't hide weakness. As a result even if we are as I expect a better team overall next year the record probably won't reflect it.

If, and it is still a big if, Harris gets an extra year and comes back that will be a huge help but even he isn't an outstanding lineman, just better than the rest of the guys we have. With that how many PAC12 teams would consider Harris a key starter?

Mustoe and Irwin have potential and I agree will be pretty good but potential means you haven't done it yet. They will likely both be starters if Harris doesn't come back. I love Nembots story and understand that he is still very new to the position but last year showed that he has a long way to go to be a competent PAC12 level tackle. There is some question if his feet ever will be good enough. He got beaten badly last year by quick guys, sometimes when he went the right direction and just didn't have the footwork to get there before the guy was past him.

Inside is an even bigger question. Munyer came on near the end of the season and Crabb was probably our best interior OL player but again how many other PAC teams would they start for. The third guy will a guy who has little or no BCS level experience so to think that we will be better on the OL is pure optimism at best and unfounded hopefull thinking more realistically.

When Mac was hired someone indicated his success was based on drafting body types and coaching them into players. I've looked at every recruit since through that lens and it seems to make sense.
I'm not upset about this class. I'm also not Darrell Scott excited. We all now know that sort of recruiting jubilation was misplaced. Mac won one more than I expected this year. Sefo looked pretty good as a true Frosh and I am excited to see him next year. I'm worried about his health and hated seeing him getting hit alot.

I'm very excited to see JC guys getting in! At a minimum they provide some immediate depth that I have had envy of since K State used that model to become a good team.

Shows me that Froman has a lot of work to do.

sorry .... couldn't resist

Now I learned the purpose of this board, and the football program is to make vagina Buff feel good. Dumb fux like you have allowed us to get this low, because you dont want to have your feelers hurt. Without clueless pollyannas to support Danny we might have actually been forced to deal with him before he drug us to the very bottom in his last two years. Phil knew he still had people that thought he just needed more time, and he was happy to give it to them. The number one indicator of success in college football is recruiting, and some dip****s on here are willing to pin their hopes on a class at the bottom of the nation, because Addison G turned out to be a great overlooked player. To think a good team can be built on this kind of player being out there waiting to be found is beyond naive. Sure, the kids are better coached, but that isnt good enough. We need better talent in here, and for the most part those recruiting services are right. I hope more than anybody I am wrong, and MMac is the guy that is going to turn this ****wagon around, but the alarms are sounding with this recruiting class, and im not going to ignore them. Support is already dwindling, and imagine what 5 more years of **** football will do for fundraising. We dont have the luxury of hoping things will get better. We need tangible proof that we are getting Pac 12 quality players, and I dont see it with this class just because they are taller. At the very least we should be beating out Wazzou and and the Beaves for recruits, not Army.

Funny you should mention Oregon State and Washington State. They both called up Ahkello Witherspoon wanting him to visit as soon as they saw that he'd given CU a verbal commitment (nod to the Rivals board for info). Witherspoon told them to pound sand. Lots of chatter that our competition is watching HCMM's recruiting closely with the thought that he finds talent that is poachable considering the recent lack of success for our Buffs.

That the athleticism on both lines is severely lacking, LBs are needed for special teams, and that Keeney is being viewed as potentially a really good one.

Just shut up asshole. It's not anyone's fault on this site as to where we are right now. If you truly believe that you need to find a hole to go back to live in. You don't know ***** and the more you write, the more obvious it becomes. Doesn't it just suk to live in such a negative world? I don't know crap about evaluating recruits which is why I'm not a coach. If I was making $2 mil a year, I'd probably be an expert at my field...or unemployed. That's the world they live in. Results don't lie. If you don't like what we've become, either write a huge fukin check or as another poster wrote..stfu. I can't believe I went to school with such whiny ass losers as I see on this board. If your life sucks so bad as to write constant negative comments to make yourself feel better you need to visit a doctor. Most of us are here because we want to see what's going on and who are going to become Buffs. You don't have to be a sunshine pumper, just stop it with the never ending complaining about something NONE OF US ON THIS BOARD HAVE CAUSED.
You are the problem, not us. Do you think recruits and their families don't read this free board? I'd tell my kid to run as far as he could away from Colorado if I saw these horrible comments from "fans".

You probably think you mean well. It doesn't come off that way to anyone with an education.

You probably thought Embo was going to deliver, too. Ive probably given more money to the program than you have made in your life. If you think it makes me feel better to have yet another ****ty class, then you are even dumber than you appear on here. Blowing sunshine up each others asses helps nothing. Go whine some more about Texas you brokeback bitch.

While no one needs to be Pollyannish on this board, you do need to think about what you say. It's absolutely inappropriate to badmouth this class. Recruits can and do read this board and it's ignorant for posters to talk about how this guy or that guy is crap and we failed at recruiting. We should be welcoming new recruits and talking about how they can help CU football, not smearing them.

Lets be honest here. This is Mike's first true go around recruiting here. Last years guys were Embry's recruits that he honored their verbals plus a few here and there that were his. The fact that he kept everyone without them leaving says something about him. To think that all of a sudden, Mike was going to come in his first true recruiting year and out recruit established coaches is about as naive as Fatbuff thinks we are. Lets also look at where we are at. Colorado has some nice football recruits but it pales to those that are around Washington State and California and even Utah and Arizona. We have to basically recruit out of state kids with a few locals sprinkled in. It's hard to pull a kid from another state when the local colleges come calling.

I highly doubt that you've given more than I've made Asshole.
As an aside to your comment, do you think it makes you more qualified to make such inbred comments? Do you think giving some money entitles you to be an asshole? I could buy your ass for breakfast and not notice I've spent the money but I don't act like I'm something special to the CU program. Somehow you have this incredibly inflated opinion of yourself and your value to the football program. Go away douche.you couldn't buy my toilet paper unless you have a seven figure debt free portfolio. I'm guessing you don't based on, well maybe you do, in this country the losers do seem to rise to affluence. You are a stain. I'll keep bitching about the texass assholes too. They seem to suck as much as you do.

God this sucks, we all want the buffs to be relevant again but we end up hating each other in the meantime. No wonder our country is turning to shat.

This comment is too intelligent for a large portion of commentators on this site. They don't seem to have any idea that A) it's a free site and
B) recruits, opposing coaches and family members can and do read the comments.

if I was a PAC coach, I'd have all these negative comments condensed into a nice email and send it to the moms and dads of any recruit I was competing against Colorado for. Somehow the people who claim to be such " big Colorado supporters" don't understand this. I'm guessing they live their lives in such negativity,,they don't see the difference.
