Biggest needs in 2015?

Mostly done with this class, so time to start looking ahead. We should have one of our more balanced classes number wise, but what positions are priorities?

My list:

1. DE-We lack pass rushers in a big way.

2. CB-Need these every year and we have a depth chart top-heavy with upperclassmen.

3. WR-Need these every year and we don't know hoe the 2013 guys will pan out.

Until I see one that the other defense doesn't completely disregard, I'll continue to say play making Tight End!

Talent.

I will always lobby for quality OL because I believe that they have the biggest impact on what a team can accomplish. It is also an area where through coaching and development you can build a solid unit out of guys who aren't highly rated, high demand kids.

Agree on the pass rushers and would again add DTs, control the LOS and you have a chance against almost anyone.

More speed, we are bringing in some now but you never have enough. I'd like to see some guys with both speed and size creating missmatches.

Also agree on the CB issue although until it's proven otherwise at least we have some CBs, our safety play has been horrendous. DBs also are often the key guys on your coverage teams on STs, another area we have been lacking at best.

Spiff is right on the TE question. Even if we have one plenty of teams are showing the effectiveness of having multiple TEs playing in various formations.

Bottom line is that we still need a bunch more good football players. We have some positions that aren't as critical but none that couldn't use the addition of talent.

We have 5-6 DE committed this year. I am guessing not all will end up there, but if we can't find a rush DE in that group we are in deep trouble. My thought is Mac probably likes to recruit DE and move them to DT, at least that is my hope. The other's I agree except I would put Oline and probably a TE in there. WR will be all dependent on the redshirt freshman and the group we bring in this year.

Not sure a single DE that is committed ends up there. One will take his LDS mission and begin his time in 2016. The rest are either DT's or OL, depending on how they develop. Not a pass rusher in the bunch except maybe the Mission Viejo kid.

In my opinion, these are the 3 positions that rely on God given ability more than any other. You can develop guys for a lot of places.

WINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's it that's all!

For as bad as the CU Football brand has been tarnished, winning football is the only route to return. I think we all realize that one class will not turn this around. Its a chicken vs egg issue. Do the recruiting classes bring wins or do wins bring recruits. For the present status for CU football program I think the latter is the case. As a fan it is tough for me to speculate on the the squads needs, so I can only hope to see improvement in the important statistical column.

I would put CB ahead of DE as the top priority. Outside of Awuzie the last true corners we signed were all in 2012.

Based on what we're losing from a positional basis, we'll need to bring in a couple RBs, several WRs and several LBs. And a punter.

Otherwise, I think it will be a pretty normal class.

QB - 1
RB - 2
WR - 3
TE - 1 (or 2)
OL - 3
DT - 1 (or 2)
DE - 1 (or 2)
LB - 3
CB - 1 (or 2)
S - 1 (or 2; 3 DBs minimum no matter the mix)
P - 1

And then "best players available" after filling needs.

The Watanabe thread got me thinking that LB is need #4. Not the MLB position obviously but at least 1 guy at OLB and 1 guy at Will plus maybe a JC guy for OLB since Greer is a senior next year.

With Nik on this one. I am hopeful we are getting to the place where our depth is not so bad we have to overload on specific positions. I feel like we are getting there where we will have some reasonable depth at most positions and it is now about upgrading for the future at as many positions as possible with an assumption that 75%+ will be redshirting

Updating this a bit...

1. Cornerback: Since Witherspoon seems likely to play this season, we are going to be light on underclassmen once the 2015 class gets on campus. Early guess is you could see three corners signed in next year's class.

2. Quarterback: Always prudent to take one in every class, but the 2015 class presents the coaching staff with a nice opportunity. We have a wide open depth chart and there are several QBs out west who look like BCS-level players.

3. Offensive Tackle: As things stand today, we have three OTs in the fold for 2015 and potentially another in Hayden Jones down the line. But even so, I still view this as a big need because the depth chart is still pretty messy.

Running back. Without Dotson, we are going to be very thin here even if you don't think we need talent.

Seems like Miller and Rodriquez help the OT situation a bit in the the long term as I see both as solid starters down the road. But you need 2 per cycle to avoid the pit we are currently in.

If we don't get a RB in '14, that becomes my #1.

I also think we are DB light in this haul as we were in the last. Especially given that Awuzie did not RS, and one of our '14 kids is a Juco (4 to play 3 but still). Not sure White ends up at Safety, but rather LB. So the DB numbers need a boost quickly.

Running Back should probably be in there ahead of offensive tackle. While I like Rodriguez and Miller, I still think we need more athleticism and flexibility on our OL going forward. If some tackles move inside down the road, so be it.

Is there any chance D Lee could see some time at RB if we don't take one this class? Maybe he could be a hybrid WR/RB like he is for Chaminade?

I am hopeful that Donovan Lee will see some time at running back and slot receiver moving all over the formation (Percy Harvin esque). His HS coach said as much when asked about his position, saying something to the effect of "ball haver," doesn't matter where you put him just get him some touches in space. That being said we need to keep bringing in OL to RS so that we have a consistent stream and some good battles going on. Also, I do think that RB is a clear need, especially after losing Dotson. The team could really use a thick back with some powerful OL to ensure 3-4 yards every carry. I'm sick of seeing us get into the redzone without punching it in.

I think we always need to grab some athletic WRs. Similarly, athletes in the defensive backfield. Inevitably some will stay as CBs, some will be safeties, and others will bulk up to be OLBs. But with the teams we are facing each week, a majority of our defense needs to have coverage skills.

Stud QB (nothing turns around a program faster)
RB
OL
CB
WR

Not having a TE who can stretch the middle of the field in the RZ hurt us more than not having a big RB, which we have with Powell
