UCLA Game - What to Expect

This one should be very emotional and loud at the begining. I think we will see the crowd ready to show the Mayor the love and be very loud. It will be interesting to see how this affects the team tomorrow. Will they be able to control it and use it to get off to a strong start and carry it thru the game? Will they be overwhelmed and not handle it well and fall behind? I think we see a very focused team that uses the emotion to their advantage. I think we see Scott take charge with Ski and keep the team focused. I think XJ becomes a force that is taking it to the rim a lot.

I know emotion can take you only so far and leave you drained if it is not controlled. I believe Tad will have the team very focused and we will see a Buff team that competes, plays tough D and makes this a game to remember.

What are your thoughts on how this team plays against the Bruins?

I wouldn't be shocked to see a similar game to the CU vs Oregon game last year when Roberson was out.

Really not a believer of UCLA from a defensive stand point. Colorado wins this game with a good defensive performance.

The crowd has got to give the team a lift. A win against UCLA would be a huge boost to team confidence. Fans need to pick them up and drive energy in the building.

I have no idea what to expect. No idea at all, really. I'm sure Booker will carry a huge burden and will try to carry the team on his shoulders. This can be a good thing if he gets hot and he plays well at home. OTOH.....

UCLA loves the 2-3 Zone so hopefully we attack it earlier and hit some outside shots to make them play man...cuz I don't think they are very good at that

What I hope we don't see is players trying to take on too much themselves. Play defense, crash the boards, and let the offense come to them.

I'm nervous about the crowd. 6 pm tipoffs are always late filling up.

I know that XJ still holds a bit of a grudge against the california schools for not recruiting him as heavily as he thought he should have been, and he took it to cal last year when they were in our gym (18/12).
As long as no one tries to do it themselves on offense and we get jelly & wes touches on 93% of the possessions, plus play strong D, we should be fine.

I do know the line is at CU +1.5, it would have been around CU -1.5 with Dinwiddie. The O/U opened at 154 and is now at 151. That seems really high for CU to win. I guess if I expect anything, for this game to be competitive I see it as a low scoring TadBall game.

But again, I have no idea what to expect...

I'm interested to see who we put on Anderson, think that's his name? He's a point forward type player.

I think it's going to be jhop, but that guy is a matchup nightmare. he's a 6'9 point guard. I think he is scoring like 17 ppg - I havent watched him much, but he seems like a monster.

If Gordon starts, maybe they put XJ on him. He's 6'7 but plays bigger than that, length wise anyway. Maybe throw a few guys at him, mix it up.

I expect an ugly game 63-60 type of game, but I really hope Tad traps/presses the hell out of UCLA because we can wear them out in the 2nd half IMO due to altitude and crowd.

We don't have the offensive firepower to keep up with UCLA without Dinwiddie, and they have multiple guys who can shoot the three (Lavine, Alford, Anderson, and Adams). They aren't particularly strong in the post though. Parker is way up and down, and the Wear twins are inconsistent.

Also, the good news is that UCLA has only played one true game all year at Missouri and lost, so they won't be prepared for the hornets nest at CEC if the crowd is into it. I sincerely believe we have the best home court in the Pac 12 when students are in the game.

I hope Tad has worked out our three point defense because that's still a main weakness of this team's defense.

Yep for God's sake, don't let Alford go Heslip on us. I've seen him a few times, he's not someone to give open looks to.

Given the way that CU Has "defended" against some of the better 3 point shooters in recent history (starting with heslip, and continuing on to this year vs UCSB, @wazzu, vs Elon, etc) I have a bad feeling about that.

I think we would've been even more favored than that if Spencer were healthy, taken into account the UW game is also much closer even if it's a loss.

Vegas power ratings over the weekend had UCLA higher than CU - HCA would have made CU a small favorite in the game.

In all seriousness the matchups with Fletcher hurt start to get ugly.

Talton cant handle Adams so that means he's Ski's assignment
Kyle Anderson is 6'9" and effectively runs the point for them, who takes him? Wes?
As we learned last year if you leave the Wear twins open they'll beat you so where do we go there?
What about Zack Levine? Talton is again too slow

Here is a great piece on what to expect from Jordan Adams

I see a slug-fest. Not a lot of scoring. Points will be hard to come by. For UCLA it'll be because CU is playing solid defense. For CU, it'll be because we will have a hard time finding our rythm without the Mayor.

If you're right, we win.

If UCLA is allowed to run, we lose. Badly.

Tonight's game will be decided by tempo.

I say that because if I were Tad, that's what I'd try to do. I know normally we like to run, but I think until we can figure out how to play without Spencer, we need to put the clamps on defensively and take opponents out of their offensive game.

Golden opportunity tonight to draw a line and show CU won't be falling apart. Lot on the line tonight. We can set the tone for this season. It's an enormous challenge, but take it as a blessing. We can prove a whole lot about what we're about.
