So you are telling me there's a chance for Dinwiddie's return:

Hey, abs... Goose needs some help.

At this point, he's gone. A great Buff, but he can't risk another injury at this point. Just come back to CU when you are ready to finish up your degree Spencer!

I think he comes back and we win the Pac 12 next year and make a final four run. Who knows, maybe we get ourselves the National championship.

The best thing for Spencer is to be drafted by a good NBA team late in the 1st who can bring him along slowly. I appreciate his aggressiveness, but I hope he rehabs the right way and not just the fast way.

CU Buffs story talked about Dinwiddie talking to Robbie Hummel....I am sure they talked about the 2nd knee injury and that has got to scare anyone who even thinks about coming back

I think he's gone. Well, unless, that is, he decides to come back.

Who knows? In all seriousness, I think 6 months is pretty damned ambitious. I don't see that, but you never know.

6-8 months is what it might take to be physically healed. But he still has to overcome the mental aspect of it, and being comfortable doing the things that he was doing before. Like his confidence, but still think it's more likely to be 12 months before he is back to what he was before the injury

The draft is in 5 months. Is a team going to spend a #1 pick on a guy who hasn't finished rehab? I'd think not

The deadline to enter is in 3. I'd say there is now a chance he'll be in black and gold next season to restore confidence of NBA GMs in his game before the 2015 draft. Of course, he could out do himself in rehab and show promise in some kind of try outs or work outs that would allow him to go high. I think, to your point, he's not likely to be a first rounder in the shadow of this injury.

I know a lot of the guys who are close to the program are saying Spencer is gone (and has been for the last 6-8 months), but I'm not sure if it's the best move for him at this point. If he looks like a 1st round pick, he needs to go. I'm not as convinced as some that will be the case though. He's not assertive enough for the NBA game, in my opinion, and seems like a really borderline #1.

Not a chance. The NBA only drafts players they know will start for them immediately. It's why no Euro player is ever drafted if there is any question about their European contract. Certainly not a team drafting late in the first round who already has a roster ready to compete for a title and is looking for future roster depth at a great value with low risk/high reward potential.

It goes both ways, he can bring his stock down as well by coming back.

I can see a team drafting him late in the first if they think they are getting a player who could be considered a lottery pick that they can stash on IR for a year without using a roster spot.

If he stays healthy, I don't see his stock taking a hit by coming back. Injury is going to be a risk either way though. If he comes in as a 2nd rounder on a non-guaranteed deal, and suffers another injury, does a team give him another shot? Maybe, or he may get lost in the shuffle of a league obsessed with youth. With a 1st round grade, I think he has to go. If not, I think my personal choice would be to stay.

I think that's part of the problem too; the pre-injury evals were all over the board. He was far from the lottery lock that many on this site make him out to be. That's not to say it wouldn't have happened, but his draft stock was somewhat in flux before.

And that's an "if" right there. There's no guarantee that he'll be better either. You may THINK there's only upside, but that's not always the case. The Draft favors those who leave early rather than those who stay trying to boost their stock.

Yes, his stock can go up, it can also go down.

My personal choice would be for him to stay as well, but that's the CU fan in me talking.

Really?

Kenyan Martin (hurt when drafted #1), Ricky Rubio (drafted knowing he was going back to Europe), Nerlens Noel (hurt when drafted and still hasn't played), Axel Hervelle (nuggets drafted him knowing he'd go back to Europe).

This is hardly an unprecedented case Spencer is in.

There are a few things that I think most on the board can agree on:

1) Had spencer not gotten injured and had the season he was on his way to having, he was gone. He said so during his summer games with adidas, and we all knew it after the end of last season
2) We all want spencer to do what is best for spencer
3) If he's still a first round pick at the end of the year, then he should go.

Now, as much as all those situations are true, they are no longer the facts at hand. Unfortunately for spencer and the rest of buff nation, he did get hurt, and only got to play ball for about a half season. As it stands right now, he's considered the "next five in" (Position 31-35) on Chad Fords (ESPN) big board, is not in the top 60 on nbadraft.net (wtf), and is in position 34 (2nd round) on Draft Express. Taking what spencer said last summer as total truth (adidas interview) that he'd come back to school if not in the top 15, then he may be returning.

As we all know, they need to declare for the draft by april 27 (or so), which will be 3 months and 1 week after surgery for spencer. He has a personal goal to be running by then and probably doing some light workouts, so lets assume he does that. That will be a solid recovery up to that point, but teams are committing almost 3 million to the last pick in the first round (880, 920, 960), and while spencer is very talented, I'm not quite sure he's at a level where people will pick him up and pick up his rehab tab until the season starts (and potentially beyond).

One other major problem with all assumptions is that we are not operating in a draft vacuum. March is just 2 months away, and many players play their way into (or out of) the first round based on performances in the conference tournaments and the big dance. That was the case last year with mitch mcgrady (it's worth noting that right now he's slated early second round by draft express, and was thought to be a mid first rounder april 2013), and will certainly be the case with someone (or many someones) this year. Right now, kyle anderson (UCLA) could be that guy. They have him early second round right now, but if UCLA performs well down the stretch and he plays well, he could play himself into the first round (this is unlikely - steve alford doesnt remember what the second weekend feels like). The point here is that players will be moving up or down until the nets are cut down in dallas, and spencer does not even have the opportunity to move up or down - he situation is mostly stagnant (though he will get credit for how his rehab is progressing), and his situation depends on what the other players do or do not do down the stretch when it really matters.

Like many on the board have pointed out, there's a risk to returning to CU as well. The risk isnt that he'll get worse and his stock will go down (I personally think he's too consistent for that), but it's the same risk that he started this season with - an injury. Also, for what its worth, the 2015 draft does not look near as loaded as the 2014 one is shaping up to be.

A lot of people have been saying spencer is gone after this year, and until the washington game I was one of them. Right now though, I'm just not sure if I can see it happening. There are a lot of unknowns that will slowly become knowns as we get closer to april that will make the decision more cut and dry for spencer, but for now I'm happy waiting around for more information.

"We're moving on," Boyle said. "I was planning on playing next year without Spencer Dinwiddie anyway. It's just it came a little bit earlier. You're getting a pretty good peek into next year's team.

Not that I wanted this by any stretch, but I do think this is good for next year's team.
