PAC 12 trying to improve scheduling...

I was surprised there was not more discussion by CU fans about all the fricking night games last year. I know I hated it and the games at the end of the season were really cold at 10 O'Clock at night. Maybe most Buff fans did not care because they were not going. For me it kills the day if I want to do any tailgating (although it appears that CU may not want us to be tailgating but that is for another discussion). I know there were a lot of complaints from people I know to the AD and also complaints at other schools.

CU really got the shaft last year. No nationally televised games and stuck on the PAC 12 network for most of the games. I could not get viewership numbers but our best game had about 325,000 viewers ( CU only was in 1 rated game out of 72 in the PAC-12 - meaning we only had one game that was televised by a network doing ratings). Teams like Troy and Rice made the final top 88, CU did not which I find to be a problem. We use to do a lot of National games which I know helped CU's visibility and helped recruiting.

Here is an interesting article about the issue and what the PAC 12 is doing about it. PAC 12 Scheduling

So the long and short of it is that the PAC12 might get a few more prime time games, but for the most part, we're stuck with the schedule we have.

Probably because no one outside of CU fans care to watch blowouts in the first half.

I am surprised to hear the complaints re: night games.

Here in Big 12 land, night games / i.e. prime time games, are preferred. The Big 12 hates the 11:00 a.m. / noon time slot. I know both OU and OSU schedule all their games for 6:00 pm kickoff, and then adjust the time of the game based upon TV scheduling.

Because of the west coast time difference night games here are not seem on the east coast. That is what the problem is. Night games got cold this year, but I love playing under the lights at folsom.

Also worth noting that late night games probably aren't watched my the majority of recruits east of the Pacific time zone.

I think they should try to play more night games in August/September than the rest of the season. I love night games as well.

It should be noted that not all night games are created equal. 7:30 and 8:00 kickoffs suck. That is why the PAC-12 is pissed.

As you wrote I think it creates a national exposure problem, beyond what BNG wrote about the night time slots generally sucking. I may be an old goat when it comes to this, but football should be played during the day. I think our scheduling in the PAC sucks.

Put me in the camp of people who believe that less national exposure was a good thing these past few years.

I'm with you, but I'm from the east coast. I love night football games. Give me a 8PM kickoff over a nooner any Saturday of the year. Actually, give me an 8PM Thursday game over any nooner, but leave the high school kids alone on Friday nights, dammit! My biggest point in favor of night games is that it allows me to do something else during the day as long as I'm willing to sacrifice tail-gating time. A 12PM kick-off tends to eat up my entire day. At least, I can never get my act together to do anything significant before the game and I'm usually too spent afterwards to do anything besides go home and watch more football.

However, I do like playing devil's advocate -- here's my comments on opposing views:
- I understand the points about east coast exposure, but how many kids does CU recruit from the Eastern time zone?
- I understand the points about the cold, but in reality, the extra tail gating time should allow for the additional alcohol consumption needed to overcome the cold (partly kidding, I know college football games are family event for many of you). Regarding cold, however, nobody has yet made the completely valid point that the females in attendance are less likely to be sporting short-shorts or sundresses (I'm jealous of Cville thinking about this right now -- sundresses are a tradition at UVA).
- The east stands at Folsom provide a breathtaking view of the mountains, which is nice given the way many of the Buffs games went this year. However, at night it's hard to see that far and fans are forced to watch the game.
- Boulder is severely lacking in 24 hour restaurants and it can be hard to find a decent meal after a night game by the time you get out of the lot.

Side note: following advice I received on this board, I attended the AFA/Army game last year which had a 10:00 AM kickoff time (I had never heard of such a thing). I'm not a huge tail-gater (I know, I talk big), so I considered 10AM to be an outstanding time for a football game -- only because the game wasn't getting any notable coverage. The 10 AM kickoff gave us the entire afternoon which we spent at Garden of the Gods (first trip there, damn near perfect day). I would not suggest for 10AM kickoffs for Pac-12 schools, however.

197 days until the start of college football.

I always liked the 1:30 kickoff time. Get up to Boulder early - go tailgating. Go to game. Be home by 5:30 or 6 and enjoy the evening. Both the Cal game and the USC game were incredibly cold.
