Anyone have any word on whether or not wes will be playing tonight? I Heard that his sprain (or whatever happened to him) wasnt that bad and there was hope he would play tonight or at the very least @USC.

Anyone have any word?

we are hosed tonight if he's gimpy.

UCLA's a tough defensive assignment to begin with.

You almost have to put Josh on Wear, which pulls him away from the basket.

Then, what do you do with Wes (or Dustin)? Kyle Anderson is 6'9" and is technically the "4" in UCLA's lineup. But that's a tough cover for a real "4".

Unfortunately, that also pulls Wes away from the basket.

And then the 3 guards on the court (Powell, LaVine and Adams) are all 6'4" or 6'5" with Adams being an absolute bull. XJ probably has to check Adams, which is a very tough assignment for him. That leaves Ski probably on LaVine since he won't get out-muscled by him and then Talton guarding Powell who can probably out-physical him (Hopkins is the better matchup).

UCLA is a bitch to defend. They spread the court, can get to the basket, and they shoot about 40% from 3pt range as a team. And then they can show a traditional look by bringing in Parker to play the post and Alford to bomb from 3pt range.

CU needs to make UCLA play CU's game in this one. Defensive intensity, attacking the post, and winning the glass are the keys tonight. Wes is a HUGE part of all that.

I am hoping the bolded is not the difference in the game, but fear it might be. We will be stretched thin against this team anyway as you mentioned and we haven't exactly defended the 3-ball well this season. If they get off from behind the line, crashing the boards will become even more important to limit UCLA to one shot and done. Need Wes big-time, his work on the offensive glass this year has been awesome to watch. Hopefull XJ can have a repeat performance of last game as well.

Hopkins guarded Anderson last game when Wes was out. If Wes can't go you almost have to start Hopkins in his place over DT. UCLA has been starting both Wears, Powell, Anderson and Adams.

So with Wes

Anderson - Wes
Wear 1 - Scott
Wear 2 - XJ
Adams - Ski
Powell - Talton

W/out Wes

Anderson - Hopkins
Wear 1 - Scott
Wear 2 - XJ
Adams - Ski
Powell - Talton

If you do start DT and bring Hopkins off the bench that puts XJ on Anderson and makes DT have a lot of rebounding responsibility as XJ's going to be 20ft from the hoop.

That being said - Wes made the trip, hasn't been on crutches for several days and practiced yesterday.

There was talk after the job he did on Wilcox that XJ may draw Adams as an assignment, which could allow you to run DT at one of the Wear twins

When they came here, wes got assigned anderson and was out near the 3 point line most of the game correct?
I remember him getting an odd assignment that put him away from the basket that game, but cant remember who it was.

Yes, Wes was on Anderson. UCLA was also able to get 33% of their offensive boards in that game due in part to Wes being so far from the hoop.

FWIW, alford was 0-7 and 0-4 from deep when they came to boulder.

They were indoors. Altitude doesn't matter.

EDIT - Damn you Shldr2Shldr.

Uh, what? Unless you have some machine that is increasing the partial pressure of Oxygen indoors, I'd think the altitude effect should be the same indoors as outdoors.

It was a joke... I forgot who had said that. Some moron from the Big 12 if I remember right.

I believe CU Physics is working on a machine that does the opposite for road games, please stand by.......
