There's been a lot of talk about CU's struggles in this area. National rank has been around 280 even with Spencer and his 41.3% in the stats.

Here is where the rest of the team after the USC game:

Xavier Talton: 38.0%
Xavier Johnson: 37.7%
Askia Booker: 31.0%
Jaron Hopkins: 28.3%
Eli Stalzer: 25.0%
Dustin Thomas: 21.7%
Tre'Shaun Fletcher: 20.0%
George King: 20.0%
*********************
Wesley Gordon: 33.3%
Josh Scott: 0.0%
*********************
Brett Brady: 50.0%
Kevin Nelson: 50.0%
Beau Gamble: 40.0%

Team: 253/351 national rank at 32.7%

Now that XJ is shooting like he did last year and Talton has gotten things rolling, CU is starting to put up better numbers. The biggest issue holding it back right now is that we're still waiting for the true freshmen to shoot up to their capabilities. J-Hop is about what was expected (about 30% and held back by the recent slump when he was starting), but the others are better than they've been shooting.

The team is really starting to catchup with its potential. If we can get some productivity from our incoming PG, we could be a juggernaut next year.

Ya I am sure for Talton, it has nothing to do with increased minutes and shot attempts in practice.

Not so fast sir. I believe there is still a place for the Nelson/Brady better shooter discussion. Have seen the numbers?

Don't forget Beau Gamble. He has a nice stroke too, and is a Senior leader!!!1!!!11eleventy

We joke, but we're fortunate to have walk-ons that could command scholarships at small or D2 programs.

Just wanted to put that out there. Carry on.

Very fair and important. I do love Beau. I don't want Beau playing in any crucial situations.

Haven't seen this talked about, but there is some good stuff about Talton in here: http://www.cubuffs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=209395604. Specifically this:
Talton is tireless. On Sunday night following the Super Bowl – he’s an in-state guy (Sterling) so maybe he was trying to relieve his angst – he went to the CEC and spent an hour shooting about 300 jump shots and 200 free throws. He’s in the gym shooting whenever his schedule permits and he credits that regimen with what he, his teammates and Boyle hope was a breakout Saturday last weekend.
“I’ve learned that you stay in the gym, keep getting shots up and be consistent with what we do – that’s pretty much it,” Talton said, adding that the Utah game was “a big confidence boost . . . but coach always says, ‘You can’t get too high and you can’t get too low.’ You’ve got to keep a level head and be composed.”

Talton is really coming on with the increased minutes/confidence. He does so much better starting than coming off the bench, and he's been hitting nice 3's. It's always nice to see an in-state guy do well in the black and gold.

I agree. There were times at the beginning of the year where I was wondering why Talton ever saw the floor. But he's becoming one of the better shooters on the team. His corner 3 has been just about automatic recently

X Talton is 12/17 from behind the arch the last 5 games. Really seems like the confidence in his shot is there.

So awesome to see a small town kid from Colorado start to put it together. Let's hope he keeps it up through tourney time.

First off - I get the merits of a shooter, what it can do to keep a defense honest, prevents teams from sagging and can keep them out of the zone, no arguments from me on the benefits.

Here's why I'm ok with CU's three point shooting:

A) CU takes the 21st most amount of shots in transition, they live in transition. Generally you don't want shots in transition to be 3's, you want layups and to get fouled. CU doesn't take a lot of transition 3's either and theynget to the line a lot.

B) it's not a priority or focal point of the offense, CU takes a below average number of total overall shots from 3 and an above average at the rim. If the offense was setup for running guys off screens and knocking down jumpers it'd be different, but it's not.

C) as pointed out above, we've got guys who can knock them down, XJ and XT are both capable shooters, so is Ski, DT while not converting them we know he has the history.

I get that it's an issue when Cu can't get into transition, teams pack it in and CU starts settling for 3's, but it honestly doesn't happen enough for me to be that worried about it.

It seems like recently the 3's that have been taken have been coming more in the flow of the offense. At the beginning of the season it seemed like there were a lot forced 3's at the end the shot clock with a hand in the face. Not too many people in the world that shoot a high percentage on those type of shots. I've seen much less of that the the last 5 games or so.

Yep. I believe it's 3 straight games with 15 or more assists. Players are finding each other and zone defense is becoming something teams need to avoid against the Buffs. Amazing, really, what a leap forward the team has made. I think a lot of the credit has to go to Ski.

Agree. He's averaging 6 asst a game since Dinwiddie went out, which is more than guys like Tyler Ennis and Shabazz Napier.

For me, I'm not that worried about it either, nor do I think we should pass on a better player to add a 3 point specialist, but if the opportunity presents itself, I think Tad should offer someone who can improve the team's shooting, with the understanding that he may not see regular minutes, or even get off the bench every game. Basically, we're talking about the SG version of Ben Mills. Ben isn't athletic enough to play the defense Tad wants, but has positively impacted several games the last couple of years. I think a shooter could do the same, with the only real downside being the opportunity cost of another project for the final scholarship.

As an add to that - in the last 3 games CU has only taken 5 3's late in the shot clock (last 5 seconds). Talton has taken 4 of them. Going 3-4.

Hear hear.

I don't know if any of you have seen the ESPN feature on the Fab Five at Michigan (it's very well produced and also very poignant ... I should think so even if you hate Michigan in general and the Fab Five in particular). But the Five went out of their way to praise the walk-ons and especially the scholly players who had been starters the previous seasons (including a couple of holdovers from Michigan's NCAA champion team in 1989) for giving their all in practice and not pouting because they got so little playing time.

Walk-ons and bench players are a big part of the support system that allows the starters and stars of any program to become the best they can.

Talton has been really good lately. It's been really nice to see him step up.

JG you are the man. Everyone needs to take a minute and rep him. The amount of stats he compiles is staggering and time consuming. He is making us smarter basketball fans.
