Bzdelik done at Wake?

RT @BloggerSoDear: Jeff Bzdelik finishes his Wake Forest career 2-32 in ACC road games.

No that tweet isn't official. That stat however is pretty no matter how you slice it.

Didn't they just beat Duke?

Yep. And there are plenty of folks who will say that if they have the talent to beat Duke they shouldn't have had the season they did.

Bzdelik's predecessor took the team to the Sweet 16 and had a Top 20 recruiting class lined up when he was fired.

UNC as well this year. Only reason he got the 4th year this year was because Wellman and him go back. Like Nik said, Dino led them to a decent amount success and he took them back a few steps.

I have no issues with Bz. I think he was the necessary, positive transition from crappy basketball to what we have now. Bz, unlike Hawkins or Embree, improved CU while he was here and began setting conditions for the success of Tad. Correct me if I am wrong (no issue with that on AB) but wasn't Bz's contract part of what began the basketball facility improvement effort, and his recruitment of Alec Burkes didn't hurt either.

I hope he finds success in his next gig if that is what happens.

You are correct. Bzdelik left CU Basketball in a better state than he found it. That's the bottom line when talking about his time at CU.

Great post.

It pretty much happened in perfect order. They needed the reputable coach in Bzdelik to get the facilities done and lay the groundwork. You're right it was Bzdelik who insisted in the facilities being in his contract, which he ultimately had to "pay" for, barely as ground was just broken before he left. But Tad took this team to the next level. I'm happy it happened this way. That's not to say Bzdelik wouldn't have achieved the success that Tad has, but it's harder to see what's happened here, happening if Bzdelik had stayed. He always had one step out the door. Timing is everything and as the SI article pointed out if Bzdelik had left one year earlier, it's unlikely Tad would've gotten hired given his record at UNC.

With where we were at when Buzz cam in almost any decent coach would have been keeping an eye out for a better situation. Our facilities were bad, our attendance sucked, we were known as a doormat, and we had no tradition to build on, little loyalty in the state and a lousy recruiting base. For most coaches not named Tad Colorado was a place to hopefully win enough games to catch someones attention before it fell apart again.

Buzz managed to implement a change in the players to the point that they at least started to expect to win some games against decent programs. He brought in some better recruits than we had been getting to upgrade the roster. He also as mentiond brought in Burks although I doubt he or anyone else ever imagined how he would develop.

It's a good point that had the change happened the year before Tad would have not likely recieved much consideration. You can also wonder if had it happened a year later if Tad would still be available, or if his team would have dropped off enough without their senior floor leader to take him out of consideration again.

Another thing Buzz did was concentrate on improving our team FT %, which had consistently been atrocious under Ricardo, and the improvement for which has largely carried over under Tad. As inconsistent and frustrating as it is now for some of our guys outside of Ski, Josh, and Spence when healthy, it is still much better than in those days.

Bz's best contribution was trashing things before he left and speeding up the process of the facilities improvements for CU basketball.

The FT% was just an indication of an overall change in approach. Under Ricardo guys figured they weren't going to win much anyways so why bother working that hard. Come to CU, have a good time, get a free education, and move on.

Buzz mad them much more serious about things. Guys were in better shape, they worked harder at practice, they played better defense, they started to act like a team that cared about the results of the game more that what was going to happen that night after the game.

Tad may have been able to make this turnaround as well but Buzz made his job much easier by doing it for him.

I mean don't I blame him for looking around, not really. But I like the fact Tad appears to want to be here. Do I think he could leave at some point, sure. Also, if we had to replace Tad, which I don't want to obviously, I think we'd be in a better position to get a quality coach. (At the time, I didn't think of Tad as some kind of savior).

As Tad keeps winning I see the list of schools he would consider leaving for getting smaller and smaller.

He and his wife love living and working in Colorado. If he can have a competive income coaching a team that can go to the tourney every year with a chance to go deep, play in a home arena with a strong, supportive crowd, and have decent support from the administration it would take a lot more than that to get him to leave, especially since he has proven that he is a guy who isn't all about the money and fame.

Agreed plus if KU were ever to come calling, that would likely be a "good problem." I doubt they want someone who has never made it out of hte first weekend. Plus, he doesn't seem the type that wants to uproot his family. He's experienced the nomadic coaching lifestyle and I'm sure he loves have some stability which isn't afforded to many coaches. If he wanted more money, he could've gone to Nebraska or A&M, and cost of living in those places isn't as high.

Bzdelik didn't just bring in Burks. He also brought in Higgins, Knutson, and Relphorde. He came here after taking AFA to unprecedented win totals. Bz coming to CU is what turned me into a believer. That said, hated the Princeton offense and his style was ultimately a poor fit. Indeed, the departure was perfect timing with Tad's success, but also perfect timing with the development of the players Bz brought in. It's just Tad took the chains off the offense and let 'em rip.

We were lucky to have a reputable coach with one foot out the door and desired by schools with more Bball tradition. He could have stayed as long as Patton with only moderately more success.

One of the most important thing Buzz did was change the culture around the program in terms of academics. We were an APR nightmare. Now we're consistently in the high 900s and I think we even pulled a perfect 1,000 one year. Quite a recovery from the scholarship penalty situation the program was in.

Good point. I'd also add that we didn't have any disciplinary (or worse, criminal) problems under Buzz that I can recall, and that seems to be the case under Tad as well. Not that it was a real problem under Patton either ... by and large he recruited good kids. But I seem to recall we had at least one allegation of a sexual assault during his tenure ... don't recall what came of it (if anything).

I didn't realize how bad we were off the court. Always good to have a program that succeeds in both ways.

You don't really hear much about character issues with these guys which a good thing. That's not to say, they're all choir boys.

He would dislike you too.... if you were important enough for him to know who you are.
Hey! I'm important! A friend ran into Bz and his kid at the golf course. Said he was an ahole, so it has to be true.

Hey, now. Say what you want about Bzdelik but it's a TOS violation to call his kid an asshole.

There was, and the kid was suspended most of the season for it. Don't remember anything other than that.

Good post. I thought he had us pointed in a better direction when he left than he found the program in when he arrived.

Oops. Should have read the whole thread before parrotting other posters.

Maybe he goes to DU. Seems like they've fallen a bit in recent years.
