2014 In-State Recruiting - Progress, but a long way to go

I'm sure we're all excited about the players signed to CU from the state of Colorado in 2014 -- especially with the addition of Isaiah Holland.

It's definite improvement from where CU had been during the later Hawkins years and the Embree years when in-state recruiting had bottomed out.

But things are still a long way from getting where they need to be.

There were 30 players from Colorado in 2014 with D1A credentials. Rivals database rated them as follows:

  1. ATH Kalen Ballage 4*-5.9rr (Arizona State)
  2. RB Christian McCaffrey 4*-5.9rr (Stanford)
  3. RB Nathan Starks 4*-5.8rr (UCLA)
  4. OL Sam Jones 3*-5.7rr (Arizona State)
  5. OL Dalton Risner 3*-5.5rr (Kansas State)
  6. DB Marcus Wilson 3*-5.5rr (Colorado State)
  7. ATH Jay MacIntyre 3*-5.5rr (CU)
  8. DB Evan White 3*-5.5rr (CU)
  9. K JK Scott 3*-5.5rr (Alabama)
  10. OL Isaac Miller 3*-5.5rr (CU)
  11. OL Isaiah Holland 2*-5.4rr (CU)
  12. ATH Trey Smith 2*-5.4rr (Colorado State)
  13. WR John Freismuth 2*-5.4rr (Colorado State)
  14. DE Jacob Martin 2*-5.4rr (Temple)
  15. DE Terran Hasselbach 2*-5.4rr (CU)
  16. OL Alec Ruth 2*-5.4rr (Kansas State)
  17. LB Tre Thomas 2*-5.3rr (Colorado State)
  18. DB Shun Johnson 2*-5.3rr (Colorado State)
  19. OL Zach Stefo 2*-5.3rr (Colorado State)
  20. WR Sam Martin 2*-5.3rr (Miami-OH)
  21. DB Jeaden Graham 2*-5.3rr (Yale)
  22. OL Jamin Smith 2*-5.3rr (New Mexico State)
  23. ATH Nathan Lucas 2*-5.2rr (Colorado State)
  24. K Wyatt Bryan 2*-5.2rr (Colorado State)
  25. RB Jalen Williams 2*-5.2rr (Colorado State)
  26. DE Conner Cain 2*-5.2rr (Wyoming)
  27. OL Ryan Cummings 2*-5.2rr (Wyoming)
  28. OL Trenton Noller 2*-5.2rr (Navy)
  29. TE Metise Moore 2*-5.2rr (Foothill Community College - liked CU a lot)
  30. DT Levi Cecil 2*-5.2rr (Air Force)

Buffs got shut out of the Top 5, but grabbed 5 players in the 6-15 range.

The early Top 15 from Adam Munsterteiger (Rivals - BuffStampede) is as follows:

  1. DB Eric Lee 4* (Nebraska)
  2. OL Tim Lynott 3* (undeclared)
  3. DB Avery Anderson 4* (Nebraska)
  4. OL Dillon Middlemiss 3* (CU)
  5. DT Frank Umu NR (undeclared)
  6. OL Salofi Gaoa NR (undeclared)
  7. QB Tommy Lazzaro 3* (undeclared)
  8. RB Chukwuma Obinnah NR (undeclared)
  9. WR Isaiah Young NR (undeclared)
  10. DB James Jones IV 2* (undeclared)
  11. ATH Kevin Prosser NR (Wyoming)
  12. K Alex Kinney NR (undeclared)
  13. RB Milo Hall 2* (undeclared)
  14. TE Parker Hammond NR (undeclared)
  15. DB Brian Dawkins 2* (undeclared)

Looks like more momentum for CU into the Top 5, but also a class that isn't going to be as highly rated as 2014.

For 2016, CU has 1 early offer out in-state (DE Carlo Kemp - Fairview HS). 2016 looks like it will be a good in-state year, headlined by Kemp and a couple OLs (Ashton Torres - Cherokee Trail HS & Dalton Lawrence - Rock Canyon HS).

I am happy to finally be seeing tangible instate recruiting improvements. Colorado is not a national hot bed for talent, but the D1 talent we do have we need to keep home and we are getting better at that. Long way to go, but finally moving in the right direction. Ballage would have been huge...

What really sucks about the 2014 recruits is that the Buffs will be playing #1-4 in conference for the next 4-5 years. We also get to face #6 in the RMS. At least for '15, we will only have to see Lee and Anderson in our OOC, but we for sure need to lock down Lynott!

CSU hammered in-state. I'd move Evan White up that list. JoJo Domann in 2016, really think he'll be a national recruit.

I really think when all is said and done that Hasselbach will be a much better recruit than most of those on that list

Cannot miss on the top two in-state OL every year.

If we had gotten even 1/2 the in-state OL who were legit major conference prospects over the past 4 classes our OL situation would be completely different right now.

Good Info. However, I'd strike Nathan Starks off the list completely, as he really wasn't a "Colorado" prep player as much as a one-year mercenary.

I agree, I wonder if he has a future growth spurt in him since his dad is 6'6". His strength is unbelievable for a 17 year old and he'll be ahead of most in terms of technique. Very excited to see him and Fehoko in a few years on the same field.

Even if we just landed Callahan in 2012 we'd be in much better shape where the only question mark would be Nembot.
