Middlemiss, Callahan, Miller, Holland, Lynott.

All Colorado OL who are coming to CU. In the past, we struck out on guys like these. Or worse - didn't even really try to get them. Some of these guys will end up being starters, others will provide quality depth.

If you want to see tangible recruiting improvement, here it is. The top in-state OL are staying here for the first time since Ryan Miller. You can't build your entire program on in-state guys, but you can certainly assemble the core of the team with guys like that. I'm encouraged. Lynott was a huge recruiting victory.

Getting Lynott was important, but victory kind of implies that the school needed to take an active role and fight a hard battle.

What's most impressive about this commitment is that, while the staff obviously wanted him and went after him, he signed presumably because he likes Colorado and sees CU as a viable option for being able to compete during his college years. It seems now that this was mostly a foregone conclusion because CU is a legitimate destination for in-state guys and not just a place where they go because they don't care as much about winning, because their girlfriend goes there or because grandpa John can't fly to Eugene to see them play.

The biggest victory has come with MacIntyre improving the image of CU football.

We "lost" Callahan the first time around because we didn't recruit him hard enough. We had all the stuff you mention above going for us then, too. I don't think you fully appreciate how difficult it has been for us to land the top in-state OL the last 6 years. It's been virtually impossible.

The facility project goes a long way toward enforcing that CU is serious about getting back on top with tangible evidence.

We lost Callahan because Embree pissed off him and his family

Whatever the reason, we lost him. There was a period of time, from about 2010 to 2013 where we missed out on every single in-state OL recruit. It was systemic. That's not happening anymore, which is a very good sign.

The importance of the facilities can not be overstated but in the end the final sale is virtually always made based on the personal relationship between the buyer and the person doing the selling.

Simply put, since GB left until M2 got here those personal relationships were not being built and maintained.

It is also clear that M2 has a plan. We would all love to have a team full of star recievers and backs with a great QB putting up videogame numbers. Unfortunately no matter how good your ballhandlers are they don't do much without having an effective line in front of them. How many times last year was PRich breaking free from coverage only to look back and see his QB running for his life or throwing the ball away to avoid the sack.

The Wisconsin model is a good one. They are rarely out of a game because they have an O-line that is effective in controlling the LOS. That line isn't built with a bunch of 5* guys. They also aren't a bunch of slouches but they are a group of quality guys who get brought in and developed. When one guy goes down or graduates they have another guy waiting to step in.

We have had some very good individual linemen in recent years. We have to starting NFL LTs in Solder and Bak, Miller was also a solid NFL draft choice who's career may have been derailed by his concussion issues. What we haven't had is a solid tackle to tackle line that worked effectively as a group. I see M2 working hard on changing that.

was it Callahan or some other kid we lost out on that had Tyler Polumbus in his ear about following grimes to Auburn?

It could have been Kozan, but this is the first I'm hearing of it. It wouldn't surprise me if it was Callahan, even though he almost flipped to CU in 2012 late.

Totally unrelated to football, but I think there has been a re-emergence of state pride in Colorado. Eveywhere you go, you see kids in a CO state shirt, or a hat. Lynott made a comment about having state pride. This is perfect timing for HCMM and Co.

You might be on to something. I'm originally from Maine, and when I go back to visit, I always see a lot of state pride stuff. Maine flags, Maine t-shirts and a lot of businesses that work Maine into the title. Mainers are very proud of their state. There always seem to be such a sharp contrast between that and coming back home to Colorado where there isn't as much overt state pride... but that's changing.

Increasingly, people are becoming more and more proud of Colorado and you are starting to see that on the rise. Let's lock down CO kids!

That name is probably already taken by the local LGBT folks, no?

Screw copyright infringement. Let's go all in and use a South Park image on our CO Pride t-shirts that can go with the slogan, "Get in the pile for CU football".

After the last 12 years, I feel like the guy on the bottom of the pile.

I'm not sure recruiting is "fixed", but this sure was a good win for CU. Hope the trend contiues through signing day.

I don't know where you guys have been living or what you have been seeing but Colorado pride has been around my whole life. (Early 80's) We just didn't find the need to thump our chests like some other states because we knew that would draw people here. I saw a great bumper sticker on Kauai. It said "If you love Kauai tell your friends how awesome Maui is." or something like that.

This. Maui is great for haoles!

I think it's part of CO maturing as a state and destination, and the population having more roots than they did say 20-30 years ago when everybody was moving in from some place else. Denver's a cool place to move to now for anybody, and that wasn't always the case.

state pride discussion is interesting. in Virginia and Carolina, even back in Wisconsin, it's a big deal when a top ranked player goes out of state. I used to think that was the case everywhere. Then I worked with a guy from New York and asked him, "why doesn't Syracuse compete for the (M)NC nearly every year in football and basketball? there's nobody else to compete with for NY recruits." He explained that in the Northeast, there is no "state pride". kids see UConn or Penn State as much of a home school as they do Syracuse. The NE schools are small and people don't think twice about crossing state lines for most anything.

I wouldn't think that would be the case with Colorado. I don't know, but I would suspect that one factor working against Colorado, is a high percentage of the population being transplants -- it follows that their kids don't have the same loyalty and state pride.

I was thinking the other day that there wasn't enough South Park imagery on ABs. BTW, anyone know Matt or Trey? Are they on AB? hahah

Oh, and Maui is officially "the California Isle"

Officially, Maui is the Valley Isle. It also appears to be the envy of people on Kauai and Oahu.
