SBNation Previews The Buffs

Now that is a great preview. Thanks for posting, Goose. I think Connelly summed up our current progress and hope for the future best with this,

,"You can eventually win a lot of games like that as long as your best continues to improve. MacIntyre quickly raised CU's floor; in the coming years, we'll find out about the ceiling."

I can't argue against a single point that he made.

This season is going to be one that will be incredible frustrating for the fans. CU could be dramatically better in all areas and we could still finish 4-8.

great, solid preview, if a bit optimistic about our secondary and OL. The stats and my eyes do support both of his commendations to a degree.. but damn, hard to see our secondary being close to the top third of the P12.

Question though, is Jay Mac gonna play receiver? Thought he was gonna be a db?

JMac, like Lee, seems to be getting the first crack on offense.

Job #1 for the coaches this fall is finding the right pieces on offense to replace, by committee, P-Rich's production. So they'll find the mix of guys who give the best opportunity to do that. On the other side of the ball, we've got a veteran secondary so there's less worry about finding a freshman who can make an immediate impact. If this was 2011 when we were so light in the defensive backfield, I think that JMac and Lee would have come into camp as DBs.

I want to re-iterate what others have said regarding this SB Nation preview.

It is simply outstanding.

Maybe mentioned or failed to mention some guys versus what we would write, but the level of detail is unrivaled. You won't see a better preview written this year.

High level stuff!

P.S. The stats about the OL being pretty good on not giving up Sacks and TFLs last season but the RBs ranking nearly last in the country in taking advantage of Opportunity... well, let's just say that maybe some of us need to listen more to what Duff is saying.

about which, the RBs or the OL? neither have been lauded by him

Having an bad or Oline or bad running backs aren't mutually exclusive. I think it was both. If we had Webb back there instead of Sefo, we would have given up an obscene amount of sacks. Fortunately, Sefo has a pretty good clock. Whoever was lined up over Handler or Nembot were usually in the backfield in about a second. Countless times a defensive tackle almost beat the running back to the handoff.

Did our backs go a good job of finding holes, and making guys miss? Absolutely not. But our offensive line play was considerably below average last year.

I see more upside on the OL than at RB. I think the talent/depth at RB is overrated by the fanbase.

Great preview BTW. Lots of good stuff. I think the questions about the edges on defense and special teams in general prevent a bowl game from being a realistic goal.

I agree. I think the OL has the potential to be underrated by us, along with the D line next year. RB is overrated as well as LB.

I like our speed at LB heading into the season. Think we have guys who can play in space well. Depth is scary though.

Need our corners to get more INTs. Got better last season, but a big jump in 2014 would hide a lot of deficiencies.

How is LB overrated?

We have 1 returning starter we know will perform, man. If another program was in the same situation and its fans said it was going to be a strength of the defense, you'd be calling them out.

Potential is certainly there for this to be a dynamic group, but we have over-stated where we are at LB.

I just haven't seen a ton of pumping the LB's other than Gillam, so I'm not sure how it can be overrated when few are pumping the unit.

One thing I think will prove true this season: we are the strongest up the middle on defense (DT, ILB, S) since 2007. Been a long time coming.

Here's the concern here, though. College offenses do their best work attacking the edges (pros focus on the middle of the field). While this defensive strength can help make opponents one dimensional by taking something away, it's not taking away the bread & butter. OLBs and DEs need to step up. CBs need to improve in run support. DTs need to move the LOS backward to bow out the outside runs to allow pursuit to get there more easily. If those things don't happen, our strength up the middle is something that can be fairly easily overcome.

the article from the umass guy was so much better. i still have no idea how far every road game is in walking distance.

Fair point. But at least the foundation is there. Now it is up to the coaches to find some missing pieces to take the defense to the next level.

I'm pretty sure everybody is pumping the unit.

One of the problems with the fall starters at LB basically being set in spring practice is that some may perceive it as eliminating a question mark. The understated concern is that these positions may be set because we don't have the necessary depth to challenge anyone who has been penciled in as a starter. Do we even have a junior scholarship linebacker on the roster? Horrible management of the position in previous years.

To be clear, I was making a joke about masturbation. Sorry about the confusion.

I should've quoted earlier posts. I guess your Judge Rein-holdin' interpretive dance to Moving in Stereo distracted us, once again. :afraid:
