Interesting Rebiliding Article

Very long is an understatement. Great stuff, though. But, man, this should have been published as an eBook.

From the article:

Bob Stoops describing Oklahoma and addressing the rebuild when he arrived:

""GETTING AROUND THE PLAYERS, THEY DIDN'T FEEL VALUED OR WORTHY OF BEING THERE.""

He could have taught Embree and hawkins a thing or 2

Something we never gave Hawkins enough crap for was the divide in the locker room from the guys who had been here under GB. Hawkins didn't get them to buy in because he had that "burnt to the ground" attitude of needing to build everything from scratch instead of building upon a program that was still relatively successful. He never quite got it that people feel respected if your message is that you can help them improve things rather than telling them that what they had been doing - even if successful - was the wrong approach.

True,

And I wonder how much the new players looked to the older players for leadership and then picked up on the attitude of not feeling valued or respected. It seemed like Hawkins never did get that part down and as a result the players never gave him a lot of respect either.

I see parallels between Snyder and Coach Mac. They both focus on the kid, with football not being the most important thing. They look for continuous improvement and not the scoreboard. They have high standards. They recruit "under-the-radar" and focus on developing. They pick kids who will fit the program - academically, athletically and with the team. They are relentlessly positive. And Mac is looking to JUCO more than his predecessors, but probably not as intensely as Snyder did. At least Mac has a program with some history and pride...KSU was the absolute worst program in the entire Div 1.

I think this bodes well for our beleaguered program. Even if we only win 4 and are more competitive, that will be progress...4 wins against FBS schools and close(r) games against teams in a really good conference. I am hoping for 12 wins, would be happy with 5-6.

M2 may not be as focused on JCs as Snyder but compared to prior CU coaches it seems like he is doing much better in terms of unconventional sources of players. Things like transfers, late signings, and a more effective walk-on program.

We aren't getting huge numbers of these kids but if you can fill a few holes in addition to your traditional recruiting of incoming freshmen you can be a much better team.

The other thing from the article where I see comparability between the 2 coaches is in the fact they use guys in different ways...recruiting athletes who end up playing different positions than what they did in HS.

I see parallels as well. In addition to the focus on the kids, he also really focuses on teaching the fundamentals - blocking, tackling, being in the right position, not committing stupid penalties. You can win a lot of games*, even against teams with more talent, if you play fundamentally sound, mistake free football.

*Pre-empt: I'm not saying "win most games," or win most games against teams with more talent. But you will win the games you're supposed to win, and you will pick off a few here and there against more talented teams.

Even if they never play on Saturday, you need more players that can push your starters in practice. I can't remember for certain who it was, but I think it was Alfred Williams that said that they knew each week that the offense they were playing against wasn't as strong as the one they just practiced against. I think we've improved in this area based on the improving depth at OL and other places. But, that's all based on practice reports, we'll see what we get pretty soon.
