Football Gameplan's 2014 FBS Wraparound - CU vs CSU Preview

All of this focus on Paul Richardson and no mention of our Dline.

What skilled positions is CSU stacked at?

What defense worth a damn did Grayson play? Yes Wash St is a Pac 12 team but they don't really play defense. He is going to have throw into our very experienced defensive back field.

Sefo played reasonably well against much more difficult and talented defenses than whatever CSU is going to throw at him. The media is putting way too much stock in the Rams winning a bunch of MWC games. They also were getting trounced by WSU before they "Coug'd" it.

If Leach and his players took that game seriously, the Rammies would be a 10 point underdog headed into this year's RMS.

i quit listening when he said that the rams were stacked at the skill positions. I guess by stacked he meant they were so thin that they took a transfer RB with two bad knees and named him the starter before he was officially enrolled at school.

To be clear, CSU shouldn't have won the game but we were down by 8 with 2 minutes left before the craziness started. That isn't exactly getting trounced.

You were down by 15 with 3 minutes left before the craziness started actually. Washington state was scoring at will, if their d had been anywhere near competent it wouldn't have been that close.

And how did you guys put up almost 600yds of offense (200 more than WSU) and only win by 3?

CSU out rushed WSU 226 to -10 and had to have one of the craziest endings of a bowl game that could possibly happen go in their favor to pull off the 3pt victory.

I will give you guys credit for earning the trip and somehow securing that victory, but it isn't like you guys showed up and dominated one of the bottom feeders in the Pac-12.

No, I was at the game. They punted, we drove down and scored to cut the lead to 8. They got a first down and could have ran out the clock, instead the fumbled and you know the rest. It looked like the game could start getting out of hand in the second quarter but WSU only scored 10 points in the second half, so the scoring at will had died down by then.

CSU outgained WSU but did a bunch of dumb **** to keep WSU ahead. CSU had two drive killing turnover while WSU waited to do that until the very end of the game, CSU had a punt blocked in the end zone and played with generally bad field position all day, and CSU committed roughing the passer and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on 3rd down stops of two different drives to continue the drives for WSU (which led to TDs). WSU played smarter and safer all game until the very end.

I absolutely never said we dominated them and in fact, numerous times on this board, acknowledge that the win was given to us.

You may have been there, but my timing of events is directly from ESPN so, while it is possible that they got their information on the timing incorrect, I am inclined to belief the print results over the anecdotes.

You don't, but your "brothers" elsewhere have.

Right what I said was correct. At 3min left in the game you were down by 15pts. In most peoples mind the game was over at that point. Scoring 18pts in 2:52 seconds is unheard of.
But CSU had the ball on the 10 yard line with 3 minutes left. 8 seconds later it was an 8 point game. The game should have finished as an 8 point loss, which again to my point, isn't a trouncing.

Leach and the Cougs are perfect for each other. Both happy to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Ramfan, we got to see a very similar situation with Leach's Cougs with Embree. That is why beating WSU doesn't impress us much. HaLk beat him when he had Crabtree too.

Look, I'm not going to take anything away from CSU's on the win. It was a good win.
I still don't see how any of CSU wins were over great defenses. I would not call CU's defense great but we were one of the top defenses CSU went against last year (Definitely behind Alabama).

CSU fans are drinking up this yarn that Grayson improved drastically over the season. He likely did some but the dramatic improvement had more to do with the opponent quality than anything else.

We will see what happens. I don't think Grayson is the 2nd coming of BVP but I also have big questions on our Dline. If we give him a lot of time, I have no doubt he will be able to make some plays.

It would also not surprise me if CSU runs a conservative running offense with sprinkles of trick plays.
I do think the CU defensive backfield is solid, deep and deadly and throwing may not be the best way to beat this CU team. CSU could try a passing approach but it would not surprise me to see some interceptions.

Something like half of the team that beat WSU is gone now anyway.

Yes... they beat a WSU who fumbled away two touchdowns in the final 3 minutes

Take the win, of course, but the crowing about it is ridiculous.

When we beat WSU, through their own mistakes at the end of the game, the consensus was gratefulness for not having to bear the shame of going winless that year. I don't know a soul who gloated about it. And in that case, the Buffs were down by 17 with 14:47 to play compared to 15 with 9:35 to play.

To each their own.

Getting 5 downs at the goal line is unheard of too, didn't prevent it from happening back in the 90s.

That was from our national championship season, wasn't it? Do you like talking about CU's national championship? What's the closest CSU has ever gotten to a national championship? :smile2:

Scoreboard.

Yes, Leach is an awful game manager who runs a system that isn't able to punch it in from the red zone or close out games.

But the important thing is that CSU took advantage of the opportunity. They won that game. They deserved to win that game.

I'm more focused on how they won it. They absolutely wore Wazzu down in the trenches. Also, they had that OLB who was a playmaker (Joey Porter's favorite guy) who made some big plays. He's not back. None of those RBs return. The C who controlled the point of attack is gone (along with other starting OLs).

So while I credit the improvements CSU made over the course of last season and thought they looked good in their bowl, the point I would make is that the entire identity and style of play that made them effective last season is unrelated to this season. They found a way to win in 2013. Their strengths in 2014 do not support that style. I expect to see a CSU team that's trying to find itself when we play on Friday.

Huh. See I wasn't even 1 when that game happened. Thanks though for being around long enough to inform me of what happened in that game.

I still do not see the relevance to the game that happened 6 months ago.
