Ped State penalties reversed by NCAA

Due to Penn State University’s significant progress toward ensuring its athletics department functions with integrity, the NCAA Executive Committee today eliminated the school’s postseason ban, effective immediately, and will return the full complement of football scholarships in 2015-16.

The committee’s action endorses recommendations released today by George Mitchell, the university’s athletics oversight monitor, in his latest report.

In addition to the scholarship and postseason participation changes, Mitchell also recommended that if Penn State continues to make impressive progress at the conclusion of the 2015 report, Mitchell’s oversight may conclude substantially earlier than 2017, the date set forth in the original agreement between the NCAA and Penn State.

Is anyone surprised? I am sure if Pedo State "continues to make progress" the NCAA will send someone by to kiss their arse.

Just imagine they did something serious like undercharging walk-ons for their meals. Now THAT would seriously endanger the spirit of college football and student athletes.

They shouldn't even have a program anymore. Decades of condoning pedophilia.

The ****ers responsible/associated with the crimes should be in jail. for life. Post season ban hurts the players who had nothing to do with it.

It hurts the university that covered up the activities. Existing players were given the chance to transfer, those that didn't or came in after have no grounds to bitch.

Chance to transfer if another university wanted them. Just because they can transfer doesn't mean everyone is going to take them.

Several were had opportunities and refused. The university should be heavily punished, the remaining players are fallout. I sympathize for the individual players, but their plight should not alter punishing the university.

Coach Carroll should have been punished. The AD who had something to do with it should have been punished. Banning the players from the post season? It doesn't make any sense to me.

What better way to hurt the university than hurt their ability to recruit?

Bowl ban punishes the university? They still play 6-7 home games. They still split money from conference winnings. They still get on TV. The bowl game is extra publicity but in the lower bowls cost the schools money. They NCAA needs to fix how they punish people is my point. Levy TV earnings for a year. That will get the University's attention.

Yes, it hurts their exposure and ability to recruit. There should have been a complete tv ban for the duration of the sanctions.

PSU, because of the severity of the crimes, should have 50% earnings levied. TV ban would have been good too. Bowl bans are stupid. So is the penalty of forfeiting wins.

Pedo State got off easy, should of hit them where it'd hurt the most, their wallets and tv rights.

Lives were ruined and families devastated because the University and athletic department looked the other way while a monster terrorized innocent young boys for years and I'm supposed to worry about a bunch of teenagers not getting to experience a bowl game?? Boo f**king hoo.

The message in the punishment is that protecting innocent people from harm and cruelty is more important than football. This reversal by the NCAA proves otherwise. Shameful IMO.

A punishment the NCAA should look at that would have some teeth:

In addition to a bowl ban for a certain number of years, declare that the NCAA will not recognize wins or losses against that team for the same period when calculating bowl eligibility for the opponent nor will it grant broadcast rights for any game that team plays in as an NCAA sanctioned event unless all proceeds are donated to charity.

If that had been the original penalty for Ped State, the B1G may have booted them from the conference.

Forfeiting wins is stupid, bowl bans limit visibility for teams. If the NCAA won't use a complete TV ban, bowl bans are the next best thing. The fines didn't hurt as Penn St. probably had no problem paying them. Fining the big schools is analogous to fining the rich guy in the Porsche multiple times for blatant speeding, instead of taking his license or giving him jail time.

Not fine, restrict their entire sources of income. Monetary penalty but a much larger impact.

Would be akin to taking his license and giving him a big wheel to ride around on.

Which would also result in the school not being able to afford a bowl game.

Well, NCAA earned a little leeway based on the moral courage and commitment displayed in handling tOSU, Oregon and Miami.

This whole thing happened is because the powers at Penn State including Paterno and his bosses were more concerned with the image of the football program and with maintaining the money stream than they were with the life of the child victims. They knew what was happening and ignored it so they could have Saturdays with full stadiums in Happy Valley.

The only way to keep this kind of thing from happening again is to hit them in the pocketbook, and big enough to insure that they won't risk doing it again. The entire program should have been shut down.

Yes it is an inconvienience for the scholarship athletes and yes the fans would have to figure out something to do on Saturdays. The players had an opportunity to transfer elsewhere or stay at school on scholly.

The message has to be that criminal cover-ups of this kind of conduct will result in real and painful consequences.

What is the status, if any, of civil suits?

They still have some others outstanding but they are trying to settle as many of them as they can with as little publicity as possible.

On one hand these victims get some compensation without being dragged through a trial and all the publicity. On the other hand this limits the ability to discover and compensate other victims and to publicly hold PSU accountable for letting this happen in the first place.

NCAA please never change. USC was hit harder for paying their players market value than Penn State was for covering up decades of child molestation. I bet by the end of the decade their gonna be enough joe paterno revaunchism, the statue will be back up and the university will reclaim the wins like Alabama claims 50 different championships.
