Some of this is inefficiency in the red zone. Some of this is due to poor starting field position.

What I think the main issue is, though, is that this team doesn't yet know how to finish.

They struggle to finish drives. They struggle to finish halves. They stuggle to finish plays with that extra block or fight for the extra yard or WRs breaking open late or defenders making the tackle with initial contact or DBs being in position and not getting a break-up or INT.

I think the wrist band theme word for the 2015 team might be "FINISH".

I hadn't looked at our production rankings. That's very encouraging considering where we are. I wish we were getting more from the o line.

The other thing I find contextually interesting about our rankings is that they aren't super inflated by really really weak opposition every week and the pass numbers aren't super inflated by playing from behind every week.

When Fairbanks was here, he installed the pro set offense and he touted our gaudy pass stats as proof of progress. Of course, he neglected to mention we we always behind by multiple scores and had abandoned the run game to try to catch up.

It has been good to see them try to establish the running game, but yesterday especially I felt they were trying too much. Running Lindsay up the middle on 3rd/4th and short shouldn't happen again. Neither should running Powell out of the zone read. It'd be good to see Sefo running out of the zone read more though.

Fraizer needs to be there on any 3rd and short or 4th and short. Then you can option out to a short pass, as the D would have to account for him.

Frazier has been a pleasant surprise. There was some talk of him being a wasted scholarship, but here he is, playing both ways.

Agree. A zone read does no good if the defense knows the QB is never going to keep it. Sefo's "sell" is horrible.

How does their average drive start factor into this? They seem to lose the field position battle.

I'll post something when I get home about the expected points vs actual in the 2nd half when I get home

Two rushing TDs from RBs. Two.

That's the main thing.

If we're honest, I think we all watch games and have no confidence when the ball is handed to a RB in a short yardage situation. We'll yell, think or post things about the OC being too conservative or calling the wrong play. On a first down play from inside the 20, we react the same way when the ball is handed off. Despite our OL being better than it was several years ago, we didn't react the same way when the ball was handed to Speedy in those situations.

There is a serious issue at RB right now.

When you can't be successful doing what the book says favor you in certain situations, it ****s a lot of stuff up. Creative play calling isn't as effective when your base stuff isn't a threat. This has to get fixed.

Think ideally we'd want some nice time-killing drives on Cal. Given our running game, that's not so likely. Think this game will have to be won in a shoot out in which we win the turnover battle (somehow).

We really need Adkins to get on track and someone to step up as a redzone threat. Bobo?

Bobo run a very nice slant route and post route. That should be effective inside the 20. Actually, those are the plays that got us our first 2 touchdowns against ASU.

I was thinking about posting this yesterday. We need to start scoring. I think a lot has to do with starting field position.

The other thing is that we haven't gotten any points from defense and special teams returns. Those points inflate the number (or deflate it, in our case).

Great post. I was looking the same stats up a few days ago.

Some of the reason for the differential is team's attitude...another part is play calling. I really don't get BL's play calling...how many times do we have to be stuffed before he calls a play action? If he's trying to make some kind of statement, the only one I'm hearing is "I'm a poor play caller".

They bring in Pow in, they know exactly what we'll do. Mix it up, run a speed sweep or something. Motion Lee or Feilds with Pow in the backfield. Make them think a little.

On the play calling, I think Lindgren knows our pass game is the strength. He naturally calls more pass plays, but then it seems like there is a drive or two a game where he says, "oh ****, we haven't run the ball in a while, let's run three straight times." And we punt.

I also don't like the amount of zone read we seem to use. The read is not for Sefo to keep, but rather to throw. However, it's a slow developing run play, and when the ends know Sefo isn't going to keep it, they can still crash down every time.

and since the run up the middle is on all opposing defensive coordinators film now, we need to throw the jump ball. Tyler has decent (strong) hands and height, throw the jump ball after faking the dive in the pyle. I hope I did not give up the surprise to cal.

Making them move around and adjust is key. It's big when you can't blow them up, make them account for more than one thing. I don't care if we run a fade or a back shoulder fade or a run. FINISH.

Kind of wondering if one of the priority staff moves in the off-season should be to add a dedicated RB coach, not someone splitting time. Ideally that would be a proven guy with deep Cali or Texas recruiting connections.

Slightly misleading as your Scoring Offense is based on a "per game" calculation, but the others are based on "total production". Our Scoring Offense is #84 per game, but #66 overall.

Revised:

Passing Yards/Game = #31
Rushing Yards/Game = #72
Total Yards/Game = #51
Points Scored/Game = #84

I think the numbers still support your position though.

Improvement!
It actually is, even if the points aren't there. More YPG means our offense is on the field more, and also that our offense is flipping the field more and making it harder for opposing teams to score on us. Progress.

Our razor thin depth on defense means it's essential the offense avoids 3 & outs.

Points allowed is way down, against arguably better competition in our first 4 games. Adding supporting evidence to your statement. Closing that gap between points allowed and points for is critical. If HCMM can get it down 7-10 from last season we will have a lot more competitive 4th quarters.

The offense has shown its potential in the 3 quarters against ASU and the first half against hawaii, the defense has shown up since UMass, minus 1 quarter against ASU. Now they just need to put it all together in the same game for all 4 quarters. Have to love seeing signs of progress.

Random, put pac-12 just posted this on twitter. I want to see more of this offensive production. Poor corner.
